Constantly dehydrated no matter how much water I drink

I don't know why but even if I drink litres and litres of water, it just goes right through me. By the afternoon, my mouth feels dry, my lips are peeling, my skin is dry, my scalp is dry and my hair is dry. Any tips to hydrate properly? It makes no difference whether I glug down large volumes of water or sip frequently throughout the day.

I have this feeling too sometimes, I never have drunk tea or coffee either.

I find coconut water makes me feel 'refreshed' and hydrated. Don't like the sports drinks.

Are you on any medication that causes a dry mouth such as amitriptyline?

Ineedaweeinpeace · 27/05/2020 07:58

It’s a common sign of a thyroid problem x

you really shouldn’t be making your own salt drinks. You should get enough salt (6 mg) in the meals you eat. So do have a look at the salt content of the food you’re eating to make sure that you’re getting enough, but don’t just add it to water.

I am at the opposite end, am fluid restricted because of heart failure and salt is actually something which causes fluid retention so I have to keep a close eye on how much salt I eat. And you really would be surprised at the amount of salt there is in food. E.g. a stock cube contains a 3rd of your daily salt intake.... Shock

If you’re that thirsty all the time then that is indicative of a medical problem and you need to seek medical advice urgently. When were you tested for diabetes?

SociaLifeOfAHotWaterBottle · 27/05/2020 08:08

If you are over drinking you will be washing out all your ions an electrolytes and that will make you feel awful OP so take care. You need to see the GP and get some tests done.

I agree, and I don't think that's OP's problem, either. The thread is top-heavy with that opinion and it's a bit dangerous. As long as OP googles how much water is too much, and sticks to the info she finds, she doesn't need salts. Salts is a remedy for when you've drunk too much water. The other way to solve it is to stop drinking too much water!

CatAndHisKit · 04/06/2020 01:22

Eckhart interesting - any common remedies for that?

I have type two Diabetes. I knew it from a long time ago but the doctors kept saying it was ok.. Admittedly my room is very hot so I keep needing to drink. Anyway, I went to a friend's place to stay and she mentioned it may be diabetes. She had a diabetic dog and had those testing sticks. I deffo had diabetes.

When I mentioned this to a doctor and she asked how I know (DUH!) I told her about the testing sticks and she seemed to find that funny.]]Anyhow, I have it. It is a pain as I cannot drink so much water and tea it does not seem to quench my thirst so I do have some sugar free squash (but not much). I also eat cucumber like it is going out of style as that is mainly water!
