I have never read any TP books but have always wanted to. I need some new books now so where do I start? Do I have to read the in a particular order? If not then what should I go for? Thanks!

I wouldn’t suggest reading them in order. I’d recommend maybe Guards! Guards! Or Wyrd Sisters or Mort as a starting point. Not necessarily my utter favourites but a good place to start so you understand the characters in the later books.

I’m very jealous...all that wonderful reading.

TheHighestSardine · 26/05/2020 20:30

There are many recommended orders, but I always point people at Guards! Guards! for their first taste.

The first couple are pastiches of thebest-selling 60s/70s fantasy genre books and haven't really found their feet. Guards! Guards! is the first in the Vimes series, and has an excellent start. Go for it.

The books follow several different groups (witches in the mountains, city guards, wizards, death). There is a chronological order but it's not essential and I wouldn't start with colour of magic, I don't think it's the best. I started with Equal Rites. The Tiffany Aching books are an accessible start, written for younger readers but very well written and a fantastic character. The Witches series starts with Wyrd Sisters (though Equal Rites introduces the main characters) I also love Guards Guards (the first guards book) and the Death books (starts with Mort but I think more flexible). Not sure that helps, but enjoy!

I'd recommend Mort or Guards! Guards! first, you won't be disappointed! You'll soon be addicted to STP

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 26/05/2020 20:40

Ward sisters are my favourites, my DD is just turned 6 and I reckon we could start soon on reading the Wee Free Men books at bed.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 26/05/2020 20:41

Damn autocorrect 'Wyrd sisters'

Bakedpotatoandgin · 26/05/2020 20:43

I'd recommend starting with the Tiffany Aching books or perhaps the Hogfather/ other Susan books. The first few are great in their own way but a bit like the pilot of a new tv show - not necessarily representative of the scope of the rest. Then once you've got into it (and fallen in love defending STP until you die) you can start again from the beginning and enjoy Discworld building up around you!

MinesaPinot · 26/05/2020 20:43

I started with Mort and haven't looked back. I've just read the City Watch series in order and they're great and easily accessible.

SpeedofaSloth · 26/05/2020 20:45

Mort is very gentle, that's how I started DS off Smile

ChateauMyself · 26/05/2020 20:45

I love the Night Watch (guards) books. Soft spot for Nobby.

CMOTDibbler · 26/05/2020 20:49

Try Guards Guards, or the Wee Free Men first. I like the Witches best, but am always changing my mind about my favourite book.
DS(13) is currently lying on his bed reading Feet of Clay

gmailconfusion2 · 26/05/2020 20:52

I agree with above wyrd sisters or guards guards. I didnt like colour of magic, although some of the wizard books are good fun

kikisparks · 26/05/2020 20:55

My first was Mort and it’s a pretty good introduction. I really don’t get Colour of Magic and the Light Fantastic and if I’d started there I’d probably have given up. Guards, Guards is a good shout too.

DaphneFanshaw · 26/05/2020 20:55

Mort is good and a good place to start.

Any of the Wyrd sisters books, I think they start with Equal rites.

Nation is also good, you may notice a particularly amazing name in there

rooarsome · 26/05/2020 20:57

I also started with Mort. I LOVE the Death books.
For something a bit different he co-wrote Good Omens with Neil Gaiman which is an incredible book

BadgeronaMoped · 26/05/2020 21:05

DH always raved about Pratchett and started me at the beginning. I read the first two books, decided Pratchett wasn't for me and pretty much wrote him off (fool that I was). At some point DH put on the audiobook of Guards! Guards! and I was reeled right in Smile

7ofNine · 26/05/2020 21:08

I am rather old...so I read them in the order they were published! I certainly wasn't put off by The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic.
I have just finished reading the Tiffany Aching quartet to DS and he absolutely loved them, and is desperate to devour all the others... but DH thinks he's a little too young yet, because of the ruder bits (whore pits, hedgehog that cannot be buggered, etc etc).
I half agree, but I just want him to enjoy them.

Natsku · 26/05/2020 21:11

I started with Monstrous Regiment, which was rather good, though I liked it better the second time I read it, after I had read some other Discworld books. The guards ones are the best introduction I reckon.

LuckyAmy1986 · 26/05/2020 21:12

Excellent, I am very excited to start my TP journey! I think I will start with Guards Guards seeing as that’s been recommended the most.

Me too 7ofNine - well, my brother came back from a uni interview having bought The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic at the station bookshop, and then I read each subsequent book as it came out.

Cathpot · 26/05/2020 21:13

I agree with Guards Guards - I have been reading all the Sam Vimes books again as a lock down tonic and they are so completely brilliant, and densely peppered with lines that I end up reading out to my eldest daughter who has yet to see the light of Prachett. I snort laughed my way through a passage where Sg. Colon falls off a drainpipe onto a mixed stampede of animals whilst she watched me bemused. If you try them and like them , you tend to reeeaaaly like them.

7ofNine · 26/05/2020 21:13

I think we're probably a v similar vintage CMOT, from conversations we've had previously. Smile

Givemeabreakpls · 26/05/2020 21:14

Absolutely start with Guards! Guards! - I was crying with laughter!
