I have never read any TP books but have always wanted to. I need some new books now so where do I start? Do I have to read the in a particular order? If not then what should I go for? Thanks!

@PolkaDotsPolka I love that Terry clearly got that his fans all had different likes and covered so many different ones in his books. Pyramids stuck with me as I love Ancient Egypt so every concept in that one just struck me so clearly.

Frlrlrubert · 27/05/2020 00:09

Thief of Time is my favourite, but I thing Guards! Guards! Is a good place to start,

redastherose · 27/05/2020 00:15

There are several stand alone books which can be read entirely independently (Monstrous Regiment is one of my favourite books) if you wanted something without needing any background.

I am one of the ones who've been reading from the start so The Colour of Magic was where I started but that and The Light Fantastic are quite full on so I would recommend working your way through either the Witches books (Wyrd Sisters) or the City Watch books (Guards Guards) for an easy introduction. The Death books are also a great way to start.

Whichever way you do it please do go back and read the Wizard books though, they really add a lot to the magic of discworld and are well worth it.

I started with Mort which was a good start. Haven't read them in order. Colour of Magic is good. Also quite enjoyed Going Postal and Unseen Academicals.

Some of the later ones are a bit shit, in my opinion. I read "Snuff" recently which if I had read first I don't think I'd have read another Pratchett book.

jackparlabane · 27/05/2020 02:24

DS read all the Tiffany books, then the Guards ones and Rincewind ones, but got bogged down in Snuff (he's 12), and is now finishing Wyrd Sisters out of pure stubbornness.

He then likes them being read to him so more jokes get explained. I may have slightly glossed over Herrena and Mrs Palm's roles, but he's got the gist.

7ofNine · 27/05/2020 09:33

Yes! Mrs Palm, and seamstresses!
Another vote against DS reading them (he's 11)

Small Gods is probably my favourite stand alone. nothing to do with its analysis of organised religion, oh no.

The Night Watch books aren't really my favourites tbh. I love the witches, and my favourite character is probably DEATH. Grin

People not in the know see the cartoony covers and dismiss them as "fantasy". Whereas really he just writes about life and the joy, horror, and utter absurdity and futility of it all.

RIP Sir Terry. Gone too soon.

kingkuta · 27/05/2020 09:39

I too started with the colour of magic and I'm glad I did as I love the Rincewind books. Haven't read any TP for ages actually, think I will reread a couple after I've finished my current book.

FrenchFancie · 27/05/2020 11:20

I love the night watch characters dearly, I love how Vines nature’s through the series.
First one I read was Pyramids and I spend half the time not having a clue what was going on but loved it all the same.
I was sat on a train once laughing my head off at (I think) Men at arms, was totally absorbed and had noticed someone had sat opposite me. Glanced up and I’m 90% certain it was STP himself, who just smiled at me. Being a stupid gauche teenager I just carried on reading and didn’t dare engage him in any way. I often wonder if it was him or just someone who looked an awful lot like him.

@TorysSuckRevokeArticle50

Ward sisters are my favourites, my DD is just turned 6 and I reckon we could start soon on reading the Wee Free Men books at bed.
Oh, that's an interesting place TP could have taken us wistfulthinking

I started with Mort when I was about 18, then read Wyrd Sisters, and have also read Colour of Magic and the rest of the early ones. My favourite was Guards! Guards! I recently read The Thief of Time which was also really good. I really want to get back into his books, just not been in the right frame of mind to do so.

homemadecommunistrussia · 27/05/2020 11:39

I usually recommend Mort or Wyrd Sisters to start with, I was never that bothered with the Watch ones.
I can remember really enjoying Interesting Times, it's maybe a good moment to reread. Grin

Zaphodsotherhead · 27/05/2020 13:26

Is this the moment to admit to being ever such a slight fan of Mrs Cake the medium (or small), who leaves her precognition turned on (except when she needs to talk to the baker)?

iklboo · 27/05/2020 13:30

I love Mrs Cake!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 27/05/2020 13:38

I'm unusual in that I can take or leave the Watch series. I'd go with Wyrd Sisters or Mort. Soul Music and The Hogfather and my favourites in the non-witch books.

FaceOfASpink · 27/05/2020 13:38

Soft spot for Sybil.

forgetthehousework · 27/05/2020 13:47

Librarians Rule, Oook!

Keepingthingsinteresting · 27/05/2020 13:54

Guard Guards is still a bit “odd” (Not quite in his stride yet) so I always recommend Night Watch, almost impossible not to love it. The wee free men is also great (as are all the Tiffany Aching books).
Enjoy- I’m so jealous!

itssquidstella · 27/05/2020 16:08

I started reading TP when I was 11 and the Mrs Palm etc references never did me any harm! You're never too young for Sir Pterry.

goose1964 · 27/05/2020 16:13

I started with the colour of magic when it was first published , but that was patently obvious that it was going to be a single book . I love wyrd sisters, most and guards guards. This lot has reminded me that I've not read some of his later books as kids came along

Yes! I love their of time. I will have to re read it again, such a good book.
Phineyj · 28/05/2020 08:57

I really liked 'Snuff'...
