Where is the best place to live in the uk with kids?

Looking to move and would like others opinions on where theyd like to live or do live?

I think it depends on what lifestyle you want. I live in a city on a popular street for young families. But I would prefer not to bring children up here because both DH and I had a rural upbringing, and that's what we want for our children too.

BiggerBoat1 · 25/05/2020 15:54

Barnard Castle

HappyHammy · 25/05/2020 15:55

Do you need to travel for work and be near transport. What lifestyle are you after. Whats your priority and budget.

SomewhereEast · 25/05/2020 16:00

Very much depends. We live in East Yorks & love it at the moment. Housing is very affordable, the schools aren't over-subscribed & we have easy access to miles upon miles of lovely coast & countryside. On the downside there's much less to do in winter, its a bit of a way from the rest of the country & some of the teens we know are desparate to head for the bright lights the second they turn eighteen.

SomewhereEast · 25/05/2020 16:01

Just to add we moved here from a London commuterbelt & would say the quality of life is massively better for us here

pallasathena · 25/05/2020 16:06

Cambridge is brilliant. An hour from London, no big hills so you can cycle everywhere. Lush countryside with pretty villages and plenty to do whatever your interests are.
It has good shopping, pubs, theatre, cinema once they're reopened of course and the people are generally well educated, interesting to talk to and its a good place for work opportunities.

StumblingOffTheRocks · 25/05/2020 16:08

Outskirts of London. Easy access to countryside (drive), tube to London, good schools, good parks, good job pool for the future.

MinnieMountain · 25/05/2020 16:14

Cambridge is expensive though @pallasathena.

Friends are very happy in Keynsham.

HappyHammy · 25/05/2020 16:15

Bournemouth or the New Forest are lovely

Greenbutterlfy566 · 25/05/2020 16:26

Sorry i should have put more in. So we'd like to be close to the beach, Semi-rural and relatively low living costs. (not asking for much Grin)

North west, Merseyside, Lancashire or Cheshire all have lovely rural places, close to beaches but good links to cities.

Have a look at the outskirts of Norwich.

BoogleMcGroogle · 25/05/2020 16:36

Norwich is absolutely lovely. My parents are ten/ fifteen minutes to the city centre, ten to the Broads villages. I had a lovely childhood there and great teenage years. Id nice back in a heartbeat if we didn't have to be near London. In North Essex now which is also lovely, but not as much going on and very expensive.

Keynshamgirl · 25/05/2020 16:51

I am amused to see Keynsham alongside Cambridge and Cheshire. I was brought up there and agree it is a great place to bring up kids (though as teens we all couldn't wait to escape to Bristol). It's got everything on your doorstep and is close to lovely countryside and great cities. But it is not really a rural idyll in itself Smile

Bairnsmum05 · 25/05/2020 18:16

Scotland?! Lots of beautiful beach side towns within commuting distance to the cities.

MinnieMountain · 25/05/2020 18:16

True @Keynshamgirl but OP hadn't mentioned semi-rural when I posted that. From the few times I've visited I prefer it to Cambridge.

Keynshamgirl · 25/05/2020 18:23

@minniemountain my nieces and nephews are in a popular part of Cambridge and they love visiting keynsham and going to the high street/park. They have often said they wish they had stuff like that within walking distance. It's also not as expensive and has more hills nearby! So I am with you Smile

MinnieMountain · 25/05/2020 18:39

The slide in the park is brilliant @Keynshamgirl. DS loves it.

reefedsail · 25/05/2020 18:44

Bridport area would suit I think.

Greenbutterlfy566 · 25/05/2020 19:40

Thanks everyone

Bridport with kids?

[snorts into wine]

cologne4711 · 25/05/2020 20:48

You could look at South Devon, semi-rural, beaches and if your kids are academic they still have grammar schools.

mrnimmanimma · 25/05/2020 20:50

@cologne

Why not Bridport with kids? It's awesome!

FthisS · 25/05/2020 20:51

Pembrokeshire.

converseandjeans · 25/05/2020 20:56

South West Portishead/Clevedon/Cheddar/Wells - not far from shops but near coast.
