Or any of the branded ones. Are they worth the ££? Any cheaper alternatives? I want to order them for the dds but they are £30 upwards!!! 😱 but I'm happy to pay for a super and everlasting product though

We have the 1 litre ones for the car and a 500ml one for carrying and commuting

turtletum · 25/05/2020 07:27

I have klean kanteen tk wide. It is great as a water bottle, you can get different lids so it can be a coffee cup too. It's also wide enough that you can put ice cream/ice lolly inside and it keeps it from melting, so great for picnics. Pricey but multi functional. Bomb proof. All lids don't leak, so perfect for chucking in a bag and not worrying.

AlternativePerspective · 25/05/2020 07:32

I have a 500 ml chilly one and I love it. I have a fluid restriction of 1500 ml because of heart failure and having the bottle means I can just fill it up three times and know I haven’t gone over my limit.

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 25/05/2020 07:51

The biggest thing for me with a chillys bottle is that the outside of the bottle doesn't get sweaty or covered in condensation so I can chuck it in my bag and it's not making everything else wet

okiedokieme · 25/05/2020 07:56

My dd has a chilly's one, I have a fake one from amazon that works just as well. They are good at keeping water cold and saves a lot of plastic, I've bought the fake ones for the whole family

HorsesDoovers · 25/05/2020 08:11

@isitamapletree
Could I ask about keeping water cold in the KoloyKolla bottles, do you put it in the fridge overnight? Also would you recommend the 500ml for DS to take to school? Thanks

Fifthtimelucky · 25/05/2020 08:45

I bought 750ml Chilly bottles for my (then) teens. They both lost them at school/university so I replaced them with cheaper alternatives which are just as effective.

I'd go for the bigger size.

isitamapletree · 25/05/2020 09:05

@HorsesDoovers my dc are 4 and 7 so we have the 350ml bottles which are a perfect size for them to carry around. They refill them at school when they need to. If your dc are older then 500ml would be ideal.

The bottles have a double walled vacuum layer it says on their website which basically means that the water stays cold. I just fill them in the morning with cold water and it stays cool. The bottles were actually laying out in the heat for a few hours last week and felt hot so I tasted the water and it was still cold. You could put a few ice cubes in which would also help.

HorsesDoovers · 25/05/2020 09:08

@isitamapletree perfect thank you, am going to order nowSmile

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/05/2020 09:14

I have cheap Amazon ones from who knows where. They are fine. I put them through the dishwasher virtually every day. The only issue I've had with that is that the fancy coloured cap on the lid came off but they still work just with plain black plastic that was underneath.

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/05/2020 09:18

It's usually the coatings that mean it's not suitable for dishwashing, the item itself is just a flask which won't be damaged by heat.

andannabegins · 25/05/2020 09:25

They all sound good but drinking from metal sets my teeth on edge!

iwantmyownicecreamvan · 25/05/2020 09:25

Random question but how do you clean them? Anyone put one in the dishwasher?

Yes I have and it seems OK. I put the lid in too on the top cutlery rack and that seems OK too.

nevernotstruggling · 25/05/2020 10:19

Thanks everyone. I showed the dds the volume with a measuring jug. They both picked the 500ml one and I bought dp and I the 750 ones. The 50% keyworker discount made them the best value for the higher end bottles as they average£15 without it.

Next question do I need to chill the water in the fridge overnight before a day trip?

Also I've seen small ice cube making trays in Lidl I guess I will buy some x

Our tap water is generally pretty cold, but on a warm day before having a longer day out, I'll fill them then pop them in the fridge. Did that for boys packed lunches for school back then as was putting their lunch in there anyway. DH puts milk in a small one and takes a protein shaker and portion of shake when he goes on a long hillwalk to have at the end.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 25/05/2020 11:09

I have a S'Well (similar price to Chillys) and a SHO (much cheaper) and there's really nothing to choose between them. They will dent and ding if you are clumsy like me and drop them but otherwise they are pretty bomb-proof.

Not much point putting them in the fridge - the whole point of the vacuum seal is that it keeps the contents at a stable temperature regardless of the temperature outside! If you want very cold water then either chill it in the fridge in a different container or put in ice. I suppose you could also pre-chill the bottles by putting them in the fridge with the lids off.

One thing to add - if you ever want to use them for hot drinks be warned that if anything they are a little too effective and will keep boiling water too hot to drink for a full day, so either cool it slightly before putting it in the bottle or use a mug!

NannyR · 25/05/2020 11:14

I find it works best if you chill the bottle overnight, without the lid, and chill the water separately in a jug, then fill it up just before you go out.

PuntoEBasta · 25/05/2020 11:41

Nah ... just drink out of a glass !! ... I don't get why everyone lugs water around ..

Oh dear. When I try to carry an open glass of water down a crowded school corridor or in a moving car, disaster generally ensues. Please can you help me to understand where I am going wrong?

siblingrevelryagain · 25/05/2020 11:46

These are excellent and on offer; I have loads for me and the children. In the winter they take hot choc which stays hot until lunchtime, I take coffee to work in one and cold water in the other. I don’t have a chilly’s to compare to but cost wise there’s no comparison, and I can’t see how a chilky’s could be any better/different

nevernotstruggling · 25/05/2020 12:09

@YippieKayakOtherBuckets yes I've learned the hard way about this with my Costa flask 😂 I used to get it filled at the coffee gut and still have undrinkable coffee by lunch time 😂

OP posts:
VanGoghsDog · 25/05/2020 15:06

Yes, my Built (I think it's called) flask is impossible to drink from as it's too hot.

Cheesymonster · 25/05/2020 15:15

@VanGoghsDog which 350ml one do you have please? This is the size I'm looking for.

WoollyMammouth · 25/05/2020 15:18

I’ve got the tall cup to keep my tea hot.

nbee84 · 25/05/2020 15:27

Someone mentioned not liking to drink out of metal - I've got some with a sports cap. Also doubles as a handle as you can hook your fingers through to carry it.

GameSetMatch · 25/05/2020 15:39

They have Chillys bottles in TKMaxx for 1/3 of the price, my son hates it he finds it difficult to drink from without spilling it but I like it and think it’s worth the money.
