Apart from Julia Donaldson, what are your favourite books for your preschool/primary DC

Inspired by the JD thread, it seems that her books have taken over a bit!
I've been buying my DC (5 & 4) a lot of the Alan Ahlberg books recently. They love the Happy Families range and Funnybones. Any other suggestions?

Usborne Apple Tree Farm. Tbh better for 3-4 year olds with the story, but I love the fact that you can reuse them as learning to read books twice, once when they just start (top line) and the whole book when they are more confident.

Oi frog etc are great too.

Anything from gecko press.

My son was a massive fan of Rabbit Foo Foo by Michael Rosen.

And all the Eric Carle books, Brown Bear etc.

Favourites for us are There’s a Bear on my Chair (one of the ones Tom Hardy read on CBeebies - DS thinks it’s hilarious). Giraffe on a Bicycle is good. Tree by Britta Teckentrup is a lovely, gentle book. We also have several Hairy McClary books which are always popular.

The Lion Inside
When Superheroes have Bad Days
Funny Bones
The Little Rain Cloud

(Probably this is what they're called)

Mine enjoy books about stuff: fire engine books, truck books, animal books, space books, etc

We never liked JD.

Miffy and Dr Seuss and kitchen disco are the big hits here.

Luckystar1 · 24/05/2020 09:14

My DS (5) was a bit fan of JD books when he was smaller, as was I, as I had only just discovered them.

My DD (3.5) isn’t as big of a fan. Her favourite book, is a book I bought DS as a baby that he never listened to. It’s a book of poems for young children called an great big cuddle’. It is brilliant!!

Also, the day the crayons quit (and the even better sequel, the day the crayons came home)

Oh and anything by Jon Klasson

Luckystar1 · 24/05/2020 09:15

Oh yes, and The Lion Inside and all associates books are absolutely excellent.

Bagelsandbrie · 24/05/2020 09:15

Poo in the zoo
Baby’s first bank heist

My young son with autism is a very reluctant reader and absolutely LOVED these.

I always loved reading the Shirley Hughes books to my children when they were much younger. The Alfie and Annie Rose books were lovely.

My 4 year old still loves Pip and Posy books, the 'Oi!' series are very popular too. 6 year old loves Flat Stanley and Roald Dahl.

AlfieandAnnieRose · 24/05/2020 09:29

I absolutely love the Shirley Hughes books too (hence my nickname).
My sons favourite would be the mr men books, I bought the set for his birthday recently and he LOVES them! I wouldn’t say they’re my favourite though as they are quite wordy.

Snaleandthewhail · 24/05/2020 09:31

Peter Bently - with a special shout out for the Great Dog Bottom Swap - can be re read many many times.

Do Not Enter The Monster Zoo was my son’s favourite at 5.

And many of the Jez Albrough ones - Six Little Chicks, Gobble Gobble Moo Moo.
