Does it get swarmed with bees and wasps

Nearly bought some today as I’m
Looking for something big, taller than me that can addd some instant wow factor

Almost bought some wisteria too

But the bee friendly label put me off, as I don’t fancy getting loads of bees in my garden

No, not that I’ve noticed. The aphids are a pain but you can spray them with soapy water.

namechangerequiredagain · 23/05/2020 22:29

No, it doesn't. It's fine and smells lovely.

Wisteria is like a weed. Only plant it if you are sure you want it, as it is hard to get rid off. I've been cutting ours down for 13 years and it still grows back Grin

No bees on our jasmine at all sadly!

Bluntness100 · 23/05/2020 22:29

I have honeysuckle, I can’t say I’ve ever noticed it being swarmed by wasps or bees.

I don’t really have wasps anymore because when we spot a nest we get the exterminator guy in, but when we did they certainly weren’t round rhe honeysuckle

We have a lot of bees, but I’ve not really spotted them on it either, more they are round the flowers.

I have wisteria quite a lot and I don’t have a bee issue on that either.

But bees are fine, they just go about their business, wasps are however nasty bastards and If you’ve a wasp problem it is best to deal with it.

Bluntness100 · 23/05/2020 22:32

Do you have a phobia or something? If not, bees are fine, they don’t bother you. If you find a tired one you can feed it some sugared water and it revives and flies off. They are no trouble.

Anyway, I’ve not had a problem with wisteria or honeysuckle with bees, I see them round the flowers in the container pots and borders more.

Titsywoo · 23/05/2020 22:34

No although I do mainly choose plants for their bee attraction qualities - the more the better for me! I even have a plant that wasps love but then they stay on the plant and off my patio!

Titsywoo · 23/05/2020 22:35

Attracting bees is a good thing!

Jellykat · 23/05/2020 22:36

No bees on the honeysuckle yet as its not flowering, then i get some but not a crazy amount.

The Wisteria has quite a few atm, it isn't a big problem as they're very busy!

PorridgeStoat · 23/05/2020 22:36

We have a few on the jasmine, not crazy numbers. I like bees!

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 23/05/2020 22:37

I have both, growing together. I see bees in them but they aren't a problem, they just buzz in and out and go on their merry way. I'm a fan of bees though.

WellTidy · 23/05/2020 22:37

Never seen any bees on my jasmines.

Craftycorvid · 23/05/2020 22:37

Honeysuckle is night-scented so maybe doesn’t appeal to bees as much as moths?

Lardlizard · 23/05/2020 22:39

I’m glad you told
Me that about the wisteria

Lardlizard · 23/05/2020 22:40

Titsywoo What wasp attracting plant is that please

OP posts:
Dailyjunglegrind · 23/05/2020 22:44

Star jasmine is heavily scented for humans, less attractive to bees. I think your safe for an evergreen scented wall feature..
Our lavender bush attracts most bees, like wise roses & geraniums..

Titsywoo · 23/05/2020 22:46

@Lardlizard it's called persicaria. Flowers from summer until late in autumn and is really gorgeous.

Acidrain · 23/05/2020 22:47

My honeysuckle gets covered in bees when it blossoms, smells lovely though and a beautiful colour

BaronessBomburst · 23/05/2020 22:48

Bees aren't a problem..You can prune and weed with them buzzing around you and they'll leave you alone. The bloody ants however....... Angry

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 23/05/2020 22:50

Some bees will steal honeysuckle nectar by nibbling the back of the flower. Not many.

You might get one of our most stunning moths, though - the Hummingbird Hawk Moth.

Lardlizard · 23/05/2020 22:50

Titsywoo, thanks for the heads up. I will seriously avoid that

Jumbojem · 23/05/2020 23:51

I have honeysuckle, doesn't attract many bees but the green fly nearly killed it last year. I have chives flowering at the mo which the bees go crazy for, then they move onto the oregano flowers. Neither of these are show stopping tall plants though so probably not on your plant shopping list!

goose1964 · 24/05/2020 00:04

We have jasmine, no special attraction to insects but it spends its summer trying to take over the garden

greengauges · 24/05/2020 00:17

I have a huge rosemary bush in the garden, and that is absolutely alive with bees when it's in flower, they love it. We used to have a laburnum tree and they went mad for that as well.

The honeysuckle doesn't attract them in anything like the same numbers. We sometimes get hummingbird hawk moths, they are awesome.

We don't see wasps all that much.

Cherrysoup · 24/05/2020 00:28

Jasmine on the fence in the back garden, never seen it swarmed by bees, same for the honeysuckle put the front, never seen a bee on it!
