What can I do with about 100g of condensed milk?

Ds used the rest in a recipe. Is there anything easy to do with it or shall I just bin it?

It freezes well, although not solidly, so you can take spoonfuls out for recipes as you need it.

Just so you know, you used to be able to get it in a tube, like toothpaste, in Morrisons and Asda. If you put it in the fridge it keeps for ages. (Though not if you keep getting it out and squeezing it directly into your mouth!) I've never done that, no, not me, ever.

Sweet vemecelli pudding, buy the very fine vemecelli you get in Indian shops.

Melt a bit of butter, add a cinnamon stick then add 3 handfuls of crushed vemecelli. Fry until it changes colour to a darker brown then add a small can of carnation milk & top up with enough milk to cover. Add sugar to taste and raisins if you like although it is optional.

Bring to the boil & then reduce heat & simmer until it thickens for about 20 mins. It will continue to thicken after cooking.

This is a very traditional pudding in the Indian subcontinent, a bit like rice pudding but with fine vemecelli. You can make it drier by reducing the liquid content.

We used to have it in a sandwich as kids

Now I’d use it for no churn Ice cream or flapjacks

I can’t get past the fact you have never bought condensed milk before. That has blown my mind. Do you never bake?

Spoon or sandwich here. I also lick the tin lid(being careful not to cut tongue!) What makes you think I like it.. Agree if you can resist you can freeze it.

@missionalmostimpossible, this is @Soupdragon's recipe, copied and pasted from another thread.

You can add stuff like spices, raisins, chocolate (stir some squares through when the mixture is warm)... whatever. Tweak away.

250g porridge oats (the cheap type, not large ones),
150g Butter,
2 generous tablespoons (75g) Golden Syrup
half a tin condensed milk

baking tin, no bigger than about 18cm x 28cm

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 160 degrees c
  2. Line the baking tin with baking parchment.
  3. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over a medium heat and add the syrup. Keep gently heating and stirring until all is melted and mixed.
  4. Add the condensed milk and mix. Bring to the boil for about a minute. If I'm honest, I just bung the milk in at step 3.
  5. Remove from the heat and gradually add the oats, folding them in. All the oats should be coated, and the mixture quite dense, but still sticky. Don't add so many oats that the mixture becomes dry.
  6. Pour the mixture into the tins and spread about so that it lines the tin to a depth of 2-3cm. Don't squash the mixture in, just spread it evenly.
  7. Bake in the oven for about 15mins. You should take them out when they just start to go brown round the edges, don't leave longer than this. If they're still squidgy in the middle that's fine, they set on cooling.


The earliest version of this recipe I saw (from a decade ago?) had sugar added as well, which I imagine would have made them toothachingly sweet. The above is what I do and I think they're wonderful. I'm not a big fan of conventional flapjacks but the squidgy texture here is great.

Make bounty bars with it - mix with desiccated coconut, put in fridge, cut into pieces and then cover in melted chocolate.

I remember the excitement of going on holiday to France as kids and finding it being sold in tubes. Me and my siblings all used our holiday money to buy one each.

They were indeed far too sweet. That was already a reduced amount from the very original I found on the Internet - those were really sweet, like eating a bag of Tate & Lyle with a spoon.

In Spain in March and couldn't stop drinking the Cafe Bombon, then one cafe gave me a squeezy bottle of the condensed milk to add extra, so excited(!) I took a photo of the bottle never having seen it like that before. Got home a week before lockdown and immediately bought 2 bottles, looks like I need to ration but I have still seen it in the shops in last couple of weeks.
