Does anyone regret leaving Sky?

MozzchopsThirty · 22/05/2020 09:19

I'm now paying a ridiculous £87 a month for broadband, phone and tv (no movies or sports)

Looking at something like now tv which is £8.99 per month along with virgin broadband for £26

What have you done to cut your sky bill?

Has anyone regretted leaving?

Nope. We have NOW TV, and it's fine - all the channels we could possibly want.

Amicompletelyinsane · 22/05/2020 09:21

Don't miss out at all. We have free sat and prime now. Saving loads. Children really didn't mind and we don't even watch much tv

NewName2020 · 22/05/2020 09:23

That's a crazy amount! I pay £20 a month with John Lewis/Plusnet for WiFi and calls and then have a smart TV with a freeview box

Iwalkinmyclothing · 22/05/2020 09:25

We did because we watched a lot of Sky Sports!

If you call them and tell them you're leaving they will offer you a much reduced price. If you stick to leaving they will continue to contact you will better offers. If you actually do leave the offers will become even cheaper.

That said, I could easily live without Sky, I just prefer to have it. It depends what you want from a TV package. Netflix, Prime etc offer a lot these days.

whoami24601 · 22/05/2020 09:27

We have broadband with them and then Netflix and Amazon prime on a firestick. Don't miss it at all!

ArriettyJones · 22/05/2020 09:27

No.

We have Netflix, Amazon, Now, plus a decent landline/broadband package and it’s still about half what we were paying. Loads of choice, decent speeds, multiple devices. Much happier like this.

Charles11 · 22/05/2020 09:30

We switched to virgin and tbh, we missed the sky platform which seemed sharper than virgin but we missed nothing in terms of content.
Plus saving money so worth it.

PhoneLock · 22/05/2020 09:33

No. We cancelled a year or so ago and haven't regretted it one bit.

The hard part was convincing them that we really wanted to cancel and weren't just trying to get a better deal.

Prisonbreak · 22/05/2020 09:35

Cancelled just before lockdown so we were highly likely to watch more tv than before and we still haven’t missed it

Aria2015 · 22/05/2020 09:41

No we left a couple of years ago. We have prime, Netflix and Disney now. When we initially quit sky they rang us up and begged us back and reduced our monthly payment from £90 to about £25 so we took it. I'd quit them and see what they offer you. They always come running when you first quit. But you have to quit completely. Don't take any offers as you try and quit. The really good offers only come when you've followed through with quitting. They usually ring a few weeks after you've left.

happinessischocolate · 22/05/2020 10:00

What broadband does everyone have for the smart tv.

I'm with virgin and want to get rid of the tv package but don't know whether to keep internet or go elsewhere?

Allflightscancelled · 22/05/2020 10:03

Slight supplemental question here, if I may. If you do decide to switch broadband, does anyone know how easy is it? I'm with Virgin too, and think I'm paying too much but don't want any disruption when we switch (use the broadband for work). Do they have to come out and bring new boxes and stuff?

Allflightscancelled · 22/05/2020 10:04

Sorry, if that counts as a derail, ignore me

Jenniferturkington · 22/05/2020 10:09

Yes I did. After ten years with sky we switched to Virgin. It was awful (imo) and we switched back 18 months later. We got a friend & family deal and saved money when we rejoined.
It is £££ though- we actually just reduced our package by temporarily getting rid of the sports (there isn’t any!) and the premium kids’ channels (they are now happy with Netflix).

HappyBuyer · 22/05/2020 10:15

Virgin was raising their broadband prices twice a year! Within 6 years it went from £25 to £43. And speed was quite bad, forget HD streaming!

I'm now having SSE broadband/phone (do not use phone line) for £28/month. Netflix and just today received Now TV stick (£24.99) and will get entertainment (TV box sets) pass for £8.99 plus £3 HD boost.

I think that when you are ''loyal'' customer, everyone tries to squeeze you, whereas, when they try to ''lure'' you in - the deals are good. I now review all deals (utility, broadband, phone contracts, insurances) before auto-renewal. If the current company doesn't match prices with others, I then change providers.

oohnicevase · 22/05/2020 10:17

No .. we have now and Netflix and all the free services .. don't need sky at all !!

Chanel05 · 22/05/2020 10:18

I'm very happy with Netflix and Disney+.

I worked for Sky around 10 years ago and always thought it was a total rip off.

peanutsandcream · 22/05/2020 10:19

I eventually left sky a year ago and am very happy I did. I have everything I need with BT. The apps for all the players, prime, now and Netflix are on the TV box and I can record. We have a TV box in the bedrooms too. I prefer it to sky.

HunterAngel · 22/05/2020 10:20

I quit sky a few years ago for now tv and never looked back. I was paying nearly £70 a month for broadband, sky tv and phone. No movies or sports.Never watched half the channels. I switched phone and broadband to utility warehouse and had a nowtv subscription. That ended last year and now I have amazon prime. Would never go back to sky it’s just too expensive

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 22/05/2020 10:20

Don’t miss sky tv at all!!! I can find everything I used to watch on other channels/ cheaper subscriptions. Apart from tv license the only subscription I pay for is hayu app at £4.99 and my husband pays for Netflix

Newcatmum · 22/05/2020 10:30

When you call to cancel they will try and offer you a reduced price. I've left once before and then got it back but I'm cancelling again as I'm mostly watching Netflix and Disney+. Anything else I would watch on Sky I can get on catch up apps. I actually need to get a move on and call them to cancel. I hate talking on the phone so have been trying on live chat but can't get through to any agents as they have prioritised their services to keyworkers and vulnerable.

Charles11 · 22/05/2020 10:42

They didn’t offer us anything when we cancelled. We’d been paying for a full package for years too.
Not once have we had a call to give us any offers so I wouldn’t bank on that.

mencken · 22/05/2020 11:03

Sky were great at first, at £50 for a year including installation. Then it crept up and up to £21 a month so we cancelled. The 'but' is that you then need a freesat recorder, there's only one available and it is fairly shit, but even paying £180 for that we were ahead after 9 months.

we've had nowtv for a while (don't use their broadband, it is notoriously bad). Was £25 for six months, then £9 a month. Once my tesco vouchers ran out and I started having to pay, went to cancel and it has dropped to £5 a month so will stick with it for those 3 months. It is a monthly rolling contract so no committment.

I pay £25 a month for Plusnet unlimited broadband and unlimited landline calls. If you don't use a landline it should be well under £20 per month if you pay a year at time. I have a PAYG mobile so only £20 or so a year (no need for internet outside the house) but even unlimited data contracts are only £6 a month or so if you buy a phone.

so (deep breath) you can do a lot better!

angelopal · 22/05/2020 11:06

If they offer you a reduced price before leaving and you accept does that mean you are tied into a new contract?

pinkrocker · 22/05/2020 11:21

I miss Sky broadband as it was fabulous.
To save £10 a month I went with Plusnet and they are SHIT, unreliable connection, drops out and switches itself off frequently, advisors are patronising and unhelpful.
"Did you turn on the WiFi button?"
"Have you turned it off and on again?"
"We've boosted your signal, should be improved within 3 days" - should be 100% all the time?
Trying to WFH with 2 children who also need.to be online and Plusnet do not give a damn. Stuck with them til June 21.
I should never have left Sky.

But your question was regarding the Sky TV, and I derailed it, sorry! I have Amazon Prime and Netflix, so I don't need Sky sports, kids or movies. I can cast YouTube from my phone to my TV so I can watch a lot of other stuff.
