Anyone successfully cut their own hair?

I'm in desperate need for a haircut and am very close to doing it myself.

Has anyone done this and it genuinely turned out ok? If so what method did you use?

There are a lot of YouTube tutorials but I don't always trust those.

My husband has been cutting it and fortunately it’s been ok. I have short hair and tell him what to do as I have watched my hairdresser. Having said that I don’t think she will be happy when I go back as obviously it’s not as good as when she does it. He’s cut it about 4 times now as I didn’t want it to get long and out of hand

Flymetothetoon · 20/05/2020 20:55

I have cut mine. Back in February I had my natural curly hair cut into a Lob with the intention of going back every 6-8 weeks to keep it tip top.
I have since trimmed the longer front bits so I have a one length long bob and it looks fine ( I straightened it first)

bogoblin · 20/05/2020 20:58

I cut my own hair, it is curly though so I just sort of go at it and snip depending on how much I want off

Do it when your hair is how you'd usually wear it and take off less than you think and remember... It will grow!

I'm debating whether to. My hair is well past my shoulders now.

Brad Mondo did a good video on how to cut your own hair in lockdown. It seemed simple enough. But I don't want to end up on a Brad Mondo video myself if it goes wrong!

My husband has been cutting his own hair for a good ten years. Nobody has ever said anything either so he must do a pretty good job

He got fed of of barbers who don't listen and queuing, and also paying £12 and not being happy

He wouldn't be able to cut my hair though as he just used the clippers mostly

Yes i've done it a couple of times. Bear in mind I have wavy/ curly hair, so it is easy to hide mistakes! (Not that I made any I think!) I first did the unicorn cut (youtube it) and cut about an inch off. Then I did the 2 bunches cut, as in I tied my hair in 2 bunches below my ears, tied another hair tie round each bunch at the bottom and cut another 1/2 inch off. A week later I did the unicorn cut again and cut another 1/2 inch off.
Whatever you do, cut a little bit off to start with, you can always cut more.

I asked my dh if my hair looked any different afterwards, and he said no!

TweetUsOnFacebook · 20/05/2020 21:35

I did the 'mumsnet' cut a few times when I had long hair, but my hair is in a chin length bob now so I'm not daring to touch it!

Igotta · 20/05/2020 21:38

Oh the mumsnet haircut!

That's a blast from past.

Do it do it do it Grin

40somethingJBJ · 20/05/2020 21:38

Mine was almost waist length at the back and I’ve taken 3-4 inches off it. I parted it in the middle, all the way down the back (so like it’s going into pigtails), then pulled into a ponytail under my chin, making sure it’s all combed completely smooth. Put a second hairband in partway down, and pull down to where you want to cut off, then just cut straight across (I used clippers for a tidier finish). It shapes the hair into a “V” at the back, with slightly shorter sides. It looks absolutely fine. I only did an inch to start, then got braver when I realised it had worked pretty well! I always do my own fringe anyway.

villainousbroodmare · 20/05/2020 21:39

I cut mine using the unicorn ponytail technique the other day. Then cut some layers into the front. I did it dry with a not-especially-amazing scissors. It's wavy and shaggy so it's very forgiving. I'm pleased with the results, would definitely do it again.

BettyUnderswoob · 20/05/2020 21:40

I did a unicorn cut a few weeks ago. It was shorter than I'd planned, but I was very pleased with the result! Nice layers and quite bouncy.

40somethingJBJ · 20/05/2020 21:40

I tried the MN cut a couple of years back and it was an utter disaster, so not in a hurry to repeat that!

binkyboinky · 20/05/2020 23:28

This is the one I use and it's worked well for me so far:

It's a lot less complicated than it might appear. I've cut my own hair for about 3 years now. I stopped going to hairdressers because they never listen to what I want and they always, always give me layers and do that stupid point-cut thing when I don't want them to!

Albless · 20/05/2020 23:46

Yep!

Short back and sides with clippers.

Simonfromharlow · 20/05/2020 23:47

I did the brad mondo one. Pretty pleased with it. I'm sure my hair dresser would be horrified though haha

redskittleorangeskittle · 20/05/2020 23:49

I've cut mine and it's fine. Hate going to the hairdressers, so feel like I've dodged a bullet.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 20/05/2020 23:53

Yes i often do

I add layers into my hair

And I do the fringe twist so my fringe is graduated- better than most hairdressers cut it

Adding more layers this weekend

But I do have lots of hair and it’s wavy so easy to hide badly city layers

Sadie789 · 20/05/2020 23:56

I’m considering attacking mine with some thinning scissors.

My hair doesn’t grow down but out.

OhMyGoodLord · 21/05/2020 00:01

Brad Mondo on Youtube is definitely your man, as posted above! I'm addicted to his videos. Haven't cut my own hair yet, but will NEVER attempt to bleach my own hair after watching his "reaction" videos 😂

I've got a pair of clippers and have ordered some scissors and thinning shears in the hope that the men in my life will let me follow Brad's men's cut video! I think they will hit desperation point in about 4-5 days!

changeofname7163 · 21/05/2020 00:05

I think it really depends on your hair.
I've cut my own for the last two years or so. It's long, wavy and thick so very easy to trim. Bits I cut slightly to short just blend into the layers.

My almost 6 year old even gave it a go last week, and didn't do to bad of a job.

If you have hair where you can't hide it in layers, I would leave it until you can get it done properly.

changeofname7163 · 21/05/2020 00:07

Just to add. I am not bragging I have a super amazing child who is a budding hairdresser, (he hacked it like Edward scissor hands) just that my hair is really easy to hide any accidentally scissor slips !

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 21/05/2020 00:10

Sadie I would avoid thinning scissors I made that mistake

My hair grows out too gets to a point where it overtakes me

Look up on line how to add layers and I always do mine a bit shorter (why hairdressers always cut long layers in they are useless in my thick bushy hair)

BackforGood · 21/05/2020 00:22

Obviously it is a lot easier to cut some styles that others.
Long hair having a trim is going to be easier than short hair.
Equally, long hair doesn't look so bad an inch or two longer but a short haircut really can't take an inch or two longer.

Am wondering whether to have my dd have a go at cutting my hair now, so, if it is terrible, I still don't have to go to work for several weeks when it will grow back to some extent. Hmm. Not sure which way to go.

MrsEricBana · 21/05/2020 00:45

I'm going to ask dd to have a go for me after seeing that hairdressers may be shut till August 💇‍♀️
