Anyone successfully cut their own hair?

I'm in desperate need for a haircut and am very close to doing it myself.

Has anyone done this and it genuinely turned out ok? If so what method did you use?

There are a lot of YouTube tutorials but I don't always trust those.

I can't remember the last time I went to the hairdressers Confused I'd rather spend the money on cake

It's obviously not the same as getting it cut by a professional but basically I do it on an evening when the DC are in bed, in a well lit room, at least two mirrors (the bigger the better) a spray bottle of water and - an electric razor. I have extremely thick hair and scissors are a fuck on. I judge by eye and comb through regularly. I find it easier to cut it to a bob, anything from ear lobe to shoulder length. Anything longer I find it takes much longer as it's a faff trying to see what I'm doing in the mirror/continously having to stop, comb, eyeball length/levelling.

I'd love to have a go with one of those DIY laser spirit levels in a tripod things - I bet they'd really come in handy for a DIY haircut Grin

I bought a clip in guide with a spirit level from ebay (seriously) and got DP to do it. It was halfway down my back as I’d been putting off a trim before all this began, so got him to take 6 inches off in total, then trimmed my own fringe. I did buy decent(ish) scissors. He made a good job.

We got clippers so I could do DP and DS. It isn’t as easy as it looks 🥴

I've done mine during lockdown, but I have done it before a few years back so it wasn't a big deal. I took about 6 inches off with the 'unicorn', then put in a short blunt fringe.

Thanks everyone. The unicorn ponytail seems like the easiest option for me but I've watched videos where it's gone badly wrong.

I looked up Brad Mondo and his way seems like it could be good if you can section your hair exactly as he does.

What is the Mumsnet haircut ?

Mumsnet haircut = unicorn haircut

TweetUsOnFacebook · 21/05/2020 13:32

You will be fine with unicorn/mumsnet cut if your hair is long, any shorter than shoulder length and risk looking like a 70s Suzi Quatro.

AwkwardPaws27 · 21/05/2020 13:37

Gave myself a trim (only took about an inch off) and added some layers to a grown out long bob (which was longer at the front).
Followed this video from Brad Mondo:

His "hairdresser reacts" videos are a bit of a laugh if you are bored too Grin

I have a pixie cut and in normal times the stylist does the back with clippers. I bought clippers, some sectioning clips and a pair of scissors and I've cut mine and my son's hair. Mine was tricky because I kept holding the scissors the wrong way round, his was tricky around the ears. I found a video that was closest to my style and featured someone cutting their own hair - if she can do her own hair then so can I.

Bunnyflop · 21/05/2020 13:49

I cut mine, have done for a few years. It’s in a bob at the moment but it’s growing down towards my shoulders by choice. A pair of hair scissors is about £10 on amazon and they do a really good job. Cut less off than you think as it springs up. Personally I cut it dry so I can see what I’m doing better, putting some layers on the top laying bits of hair so it’s a bit tousled and wavy looking. And I just do the very ends carefully while looking in the mirror doing it gradually.

Sadie789 · 21/05/2020 14:09

@EnthusiasmIsDisturbed layers are exactly what I need but for some reason hairdressers don’t seem to do layers any more.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 21/05/2020 19:36

Its not fashionable to have layers (I think what do I know)

I finally found a hairdresser earlier this year that cut shorter layers my hair its just past my shoulders and I want that last two/three inches layered she did it and I was really pleased. Others have insisted l should only layer about an inch at the bottom so my hair takes on a triangular look unless I spend ages blow drying it Hmm

I know my own hair 😡

Sorry bit of a rant

ginghamstarfish · 21/05/2020 19:39

Yes, been doing it for a few years now, always hated going to the hairdresser! Followed Youtube videos, took it slowly, mirror front and back.

Sadie789 · 21/05/2020 19:41

What kind of scissors would one use for this unicorn thing? Should I buy proper hair scissors?

Sadie789 · 21/05/2020 19:44

@EnthusiasmIsDisturbed yes I have a triangle too! My hair used to be great back in the days of the “Rachel” but now all this lob nonsense i just look like One of the Mr Men.
