Shopping centres

I live close to a massive shopping centre (in leeds) my neighbour is the manager at Topshop and she's informed me that a handful of stores will be hopefully opening on June 1st. They are currently getting things in place to open on this date all being well. This includes primark, topshop and some other large high street stores.

Having a discussion with my other half and I've said I bet it will be so quiet and he's said I must be mad, it will be heaving!

Just wondering what people's opinions will be... surely most people will refrain from going!

I can't bloody wait to go shopping again. To go anywhere that isn't a supermarket or Home Bargains.

Sparklingbrook · 20/05/2020 19:52

They have to open back up at some point.

Shadow01 · 20/05/2020 19:53

We open on June 1st too, we’re preparing to be busy as people will just want to get out and shop.

misslockdown87 · 20/05/2020 19:53

Oh I know they have to open and I too can't wait to go shopping but just thinking surely people will stay away for a few reasons... I hate going near Christmas and my other half seems to think it will be a similar sort of occasion...

The shops will definitely be busy.

heartsonacake · 20/05/2020 19:54

It will be absolutely heaving, I can guarantee it.

2beautifulbabs · 20/05/2020 19:56

I don't think I could cope with shopping now my DH does our food shop I can't stand queuing and for me it would just destroy the enjoyment of shopping all together I miss being able to just go in and out of shops and browse freely 🥺 so I don't think I'll be returning to shops until we are able to do the above without queuing and restrictions in place.

I do imagine however that there will be a lot of people happy to do that no matter what

misslockdown87 · 20/05/2020 19:56

I suppose I was just hopeful in thinking people might refrain from going so it would stay quiet. I really want a primark outing. My other half said I better book a full day to get there in, shop, pay and out ..

Where do you work @Shadow01

Some people will choose to stay away, and they will have reasons for that.
But others will be happy to go shopping in the same way they do at B&Q/the supermarkets now. 2 metres apart (if that still applies by June 1) and with screens at the tills etc.
It will be busy until the novelty wears off and then it will be normal.

I think it will be fine.

Lipz · 20/05/2020 19:58

I'm sure they'll have to implement social distancing so it'll mean people queueing, spread out so it'll look even busier. Imagine queueing for ages, then getting in and feeling under pressure to look and buy as fast as you can because you'll be thinking of the people waiting to get in. I rather wait and then browse at my own leisure.

misslockdown87 · 20/05/2020 20:00

I was just about to say.. are we having to shop alone too. I know I love going shopping with my sister or mum but this is off the agenda at the moment. It'll be a strange affair. I hate grocery shopping now, it feels too much pressure to get in and get out as quick as possible.

We are so heading for a second wave Sad

Sparklingbrook · 20/05/2020 20:37

I am not convinced we are heading for a second wave, because a lot of people won't want to go out even though the shops are open.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 20/05/2020 20:43

White Rose? I think it will be heaving.

WithIcePlease · 20/05/2020 20:45

There'll be a lot of time spent queuing
I wonder how it will work on high streets. It's already difficult in some places to know which queue is which 😂

WithIcePlease · 20/05/2020 20:46

And if people continue to leave 4m gap in queues instead of 2 it will get silly

formerbabe · 20/05/2020 20:48

I'm desperate to go clothes shopping...I predict massive queues...especially Primark I reckon.

Hoppinggreen · 20/05/2020 20:49

White Rose Centre?
I’m not planning on going to a shopping centre for a loooooooong time

EggysMom · 20/05/2020 20:51

Look what happened on the first day of good weather when we've been allowed to travel - everybody headed for the beaches, causing gridlock. Of course people are going to flock to the shopping centres once these stores open, it'll be like the Next boxing day sale but outside all of the stores. Horrific. The only saving grace is that it might make supermarket queues a bit shorter as people have somewhere else to go to kill time!

GrandAltogetherSo · 20/05/2020 20:52

I can’t imagine going to a big shopping centre this side of Christmas, to be honest. I’m not that fussed by them generally and probably go about 4 times a year so I’m in no hurry to visit one soon.

formerbabe · 20/05/2020 20:53

As soon as shopping centres near me open, I will be there. I'd love a mooch round Primark and H&M right now. I really need some bits for summer. I think lots of people feel the same. There's a b &m near me...the queues every day are snaking round the car park. Yes, some people will be nervous but many are past caring.

AgeLikeWine · 20/05/2020 20:54

I assume the situation in shopping centres will be the same as that at supermarkets. Strictly enforced limits on the number of people allowed in the centre, and the number allowed in individual shops. Socially distanced queues. Changing rooms closed. Card payment only. Cafes and eateries set up for takeaway only.

One would hope the queues for non-essential shops would be self-limiting, in that nobody is going to be stupid enough to queue for an hour to get into Primark, but I might be proved wrong. It wouldn’t be the first time I had overestimated the intelligence of the British public...

misslockdown87 · 20/05/2020 20:54

Yes the white rose centre.

misslockdown87 · 20/05/2020 20:57

It's not massive in comparison to Meadowhall so no idea why I put massive Wink but you get my point. I too need some summer clothes. I had a baby in January and none of my size 8 clothes fit. I'd be optimistic to go buy 12's now. Still in my maternity jeans in this weather Smile

It’ll be awful. Que to get in. Que to pay arrows on the floor.

No time to browse. No’popping in’ to buy xx-
It’ll be hot and heaving

Not for me. Way too stressful
