I have been a life long Sainsbury,s shopper, I am currently shielding... Tesco

responded to the sharing of information and offered me slots from about ten days in.

Their website is clear and concise and easy to navigate.

Sainsburys, I had to eventually ring and ask why I wasn't on their list, but no bother because, it only goes (from what I can see) one week ahead with no logic as to when is the optimum time to have a look.

I have gone from spending a lot of money, including food and petrol in excess of £10k a year.......to a total Tesco online convert.

For a quick shop I typically go to asda or Iceland (ours are next to each other) or for a nicer shop waitrose, however I tried tesco once a few weeks ago and it was an awful experience compared to my dealings with the other shops. Rude staff screaming at each other at the front of the store, routes through the store that could only have been devised by an idiot who doesn't have a clue about infection transmission, and it is near impossible to get near the instore pharmacy. I just put my basket down and walked out, other friends and family have had similar issues, really put me off going back.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 19/05/2020 08:25

I'm an existing online shopping customer with Sainsburys who isn't shielding and I think they have been great. The slots for vunerable customers were issued at start of the week then aound midweek slots were released to delivery pass customers. I have had a slot every week although sometimes booked at short notice.

Things seem to have gone back to normal now with lots of choice of slot each week.

They updated us every week by email regarding what their strategy was and how slots were being allicated and how to be put on the vunerable list. I think they have been really good.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 19/05/2020 08:29

I have always preferred Tesco. Better deals, value for money, layout. Love my clubcard points. Their own brand items are mostly excellent. Wouldn't buy from every range, obviously, but ice lollies, beans, fruit juice, squash, cereals, mayonnaise etc etc. Their meal for 2 indian boxes have been a godsend in lockdown because they taste like takeaway, the portions are incredibly generous and my son LOVES them.

Luckily I live less than half a mile away from the store now so I have kinda stopped getting deliveries for the past 8 years.

Totally agree about the social distancing rules. Much more structured than every other shop I have been in (bar homebase, who were like social distance nazis... if you wanted paint AND a screwdriver tough, you'd have to queue up again).

Because I have been shopping for my parents I was trying to get them a slot, but nowhere available. I did get an asda click and collect though and ordered for both families (our tesco doesn't do this). I really didn't enjoy the asda food. Spent a fortune and felt like I got very little for it.

Sainsbury's were fairly shit at the start and the emails from the CEO were boarding on the rude and downright aggressive.

However they have now sorted themselves out a bit more. Can only see slots a week in advance and only one delivery every 7 days, but once the vulnerable slots have been allocated availability is fair. Even yesterday evening there were slots available for today and I managed to move my slot to a better time.

Stock availability is ok and has improved a lot though some things still totally unavailable (6 pints of milk). They have always done the evoucher thing, though that is a big improvement on years ago when you just paid the higher price.

Ocado dropped me like a hot stone.

Iceland are good, as usual.

Morrisons were a bit of a farce, loads of subs / missing items, no opportunity to reject them and painful to get a refund.

I think overall though that everyone's experience has been different whichever supermarket and I am not sure it is possible to say that in all circumstances X supermarket has done the best.

AngusThermopyle · 19/05/2020 08:37

It's such a shame that a company you've used and love had done so badly.
Our Sainsbury's has been really on the ball, I've managed to get slots for my parents and myself , plus my nearest dd has also been able to. We have been shielding because of parents ages, mine & dh underlying issues, but dd has been on the government list and they contacted her.
Though I've heard out nearest Tesco has been a shoddy big pile of poo.
Amazing how different areas get it so wrong.

Kernowgal · 19/05/2020 08:48

Our Sainsbury's delivery has been fine, a few annoying subs here and there but that's usually at the discretion of the picker and what they think is suitable.

Went to the big Tesco yesterday for fresh stuff and was dreading it, but there was no queue, plenty of stock, most people following the one way system and I only had to queue for five minutes at the checkout line. Staff were lovely.

CoolShoeshine · 19/05/2020 08:50

I’ve been going to Tesco weekly since the start of lockdown and have found them reassuringly excellent. The queues to get in and also to pay are very well organised, great stock levels and clear directions to adhere to.
Went to Sainsbury’s recently for a change as needed to get a couple of clothing bits and thought that they would have better stock. Once inside it was chaos! People everywhere going in all directions! Impossible to actually get your groceries and social distance! Not going again whilst this lasts (plus our weekly bill comes to around £20 more in Sainsbury’s v Tesco)

JudyCoolibar · 19/05/2020 08:52

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Tescos, but I must say our closest large branch has really stepped up to the mark since Covid - initially with rationing the stuff that people were panic buying, and subsequently with putting in place a good social distancing system and keeping it supervised and working, and keeping reasonable stock levels on the shelf.

Sertchgi123 · 19/05/2020 08:57

Yeah, I’ve shopped at Sainsbury’s for years and spent an awful lot of money with them. We’ve converted 100% to Tesco.

StewPots · 19/05/2020 09:21

I was disappointed in Sainsburys, but I'm not shielding, I'm just a single parent who doesn't drive so am a regular online shopper. I understood the slots were needed for the most vulnerable. For that reason I haven't even bothered trying to get a slot at all the whole of this lockdown, so it's very galling to read that Sainsburys aren't delivering or putting more slots in for those that really need them!

I have managed to get a few slots over the past 3 weeks with Iceland. They don't have the range of the bigger supermarkets granted, but I've still used them regularly in the last few years, usually for budget reasons. I have to say they've been brilliant - they don't have the subs issues I seem to always have with Sainsburys, their ranges are good value and their drivers are great.

I doubt I will return to Sainsburys after this is over. The fact they haven't looked after vulnerable customers plus the fact a lot of their produce is over priced has put me off.

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 19/05/2020 09:22

Tesco took bloody months to make any slots available to my DF (late 70s, vulnerable, has shopped with Tesco online weekly for god knows how long). We’d have been really stuck if I hadn’t managed to get him some Ocado deliveries.

RainMustFall · 19/05/2020 09:46

I've had Tesco deliveries for many years and by logging on just before midnight, have managed to get slots every week through lockdown.

I had started ordering with Waitrose when I fancied something different but have had no luck with a slot at all. What irritates me is that I sign in just before 12 and suddenly I get dumped back to the front page and I have to sign in again. I then get a message saying there's an error when it's not an error at all, they are blocking everyone except those on their list which is fine but they should say that.

Likethebattle · 19/05/2020 09:48

I still use sainsburys and find them excellent, I’ve had issues with other supermarket delivery’s, asda sent be two items out of date and my cheese was open, Tesco send me a bunch of stuff to be used the day of the delivery. Not much use when my delivery was 9pm,

In regards to the e-vouchers you can push to get a refund it’s just that it’s a more difficult process (I know someone who works on the online delivery team), they are swamped right now,

KaptenKrusty · 19/05/2020 09:50

I don’t know why anyone is loyal to businesses these days - you should always ship around! You’ve probably been overspending massively for yours - also companies don’t care how long you’ve been with them?

Soph88888 · 19/05/2020 09:52

Heavily pregnant here!
Our local sainsburys has an Argos inside and I'd ordered some baby bits to collect as they wouldn't deliver.
On an extremely hot and sunny day I was refused access to collect my items from argos (even offered to leave my purse in the car to prove I wouldn't sneak into sainsburys to do my shopping).
Was directed to the back of the 45 min long que to stand in the sun.
Wont be returning!

Floralnomad · 19/05/2020 10:03

Soph88888 , they won’t let you do that because they hear it 20x per day and 19/20 people then sneak off from Argos or the chemist and go and shop having queue jumped . It’s unfortunate but I don’t think it’s a bad policy .

TheGreatWave · 19/05/2020 10:07

When I went to Sainsbury's the lady at the door said that they had had a real issue with people claiming to just want to collect something from Argos and then swanning off into the store. They had had to say No to everyone. Blame the people who have taken the piss, not the store themselves.

maggienolia · 19/05/2020 10:07

Fact is, when (and if) the time comes when shopping habits return to normal people will remember how they were treated by the stores during these times.

TheWitchwithNoName · 19/05/2020 10:11

I used to use Sainsbury’s home delivery but stopped about a year ago. Tried to log in when lockdown started for it to tell me I didn’t have an account! Bastards

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 19/05/2020 10:14

Sainsbury's made a right mess of things at the beginning of this which in many ways is understandable but their customer service was terrible and the emails announcing what they were doing were at odds with what was actually happening.
We did eventually manage to get deliveries but I still don't know if that's because I had a pass or because I'm on the shielding list. I haven't heard from any other supermarket.
When my pass is due for renewal I shall be considering moving but before this I was happy with Sainsbury's.

midnightstar66 · 19/05/2020 10:24

Tesco's organisation in store is way above Sainsbury's too. Freshly sanitized trolleys at the front of the queue where the person letting people in are on a radio being told how many and in and when based on businesses in areas of the store, hand gel just inside the door, one way system and gaps in aisles blocked of to enforce this, remote approval for over 18 products at the self serve. Sainsbury's is an absolute free for all trolleys just in their normal spots uncleaned (not to mention you get to the front of a very long queue and realise you don't have the £ coin because most supermarkets did away with that a long time ago here) no in store system and grumpy staff that lean over you to approve stuff I've always preferred tesco anyway but this has boosted them even further for me

ScarfLadysBag · 19/05/2020 10:24

I've found Tesco excellent. We got a recurring slot with ASDA when this all kicked off but after a few weeks Tesco seemed to sort itself out and now we have no problem getting our weekly slots again so I cancelled the ASDA slots. I think both supermarkets have put a lot of work into improving their online capability.

Pre-lockdown, I could have my pick of slots for the next day, so I don't think online shopping was used heavily at all. To go from that to booked out for weeks was a huge change in a short period of time.

TheGreatWave · 19/05/2020 10:32

Fact is, when (and if) the time comes when shopping habits return to normal people will remember how they were treated by the stores during these times.

Honestly, I don't think most people will. Old habits die hard. Maybe for a little while but then they will go back to what they have always done, especially where convenience (or lack of) is involved.

I could hate Sainsbury's to the core, but eventually once I was back at work I would still go as it the one that I pass the easiest on the way home from work.

rottiemum88 · 19/05/2020 10:37

I've never been a Sainsbury's shopper, always Tesco/Ocado home deliveries, but found since lockdown we can't get home delivery with any of the main supermarkets, so we do click and collect instead. Tried both Tesco and Sainsbury's and the experience with Sainsbury's has been far better; less substitutions, better cleanliness and handling practices and general observation of social distancing. When I went to collect my (last) Tesco order, the employee came straight upto me, handed me my delivery note and started chatting about the weather right in my face without any PPE whatsoever. Was less than impressed and won't be returning.

GreenFairy246 · 19/05/2020 10:44

I'm exactly the same, always used Sainsburys and spent a fortune.

Now I can't get a delivery or click and collect order because I am not on this vulnerable list of theirs. I have a chronic illness, I would not take a delivery slot as I will leave the house and save those for people that can't, but I would have liked a click and collect.

I have had to go to Tesco, they've been great, I get a click and collect every 7-10 days. I tried to email Sainsburys with my feedback, but I got an automated reply saying they aren't using their customer services email address anymore.

Hugely disappointed! Won't be going back to them after this
