Help! Scots slang to mean bad deal, rip off, etc.

I’m trying to remember a word my father (who was Scottish) used to say to indicate something he’d bought was a bad deal. It’s one of those ones where I have no idea what the word was, sounded like, what it began with and so on, but I feel I’ll know it as soon as I see it.

Can anyone help me?

Also never heard of it and I've lived in NE Scotland for 35 years. It's a new one to me

deste · 18/05/2020 22:59

I’m NE of Scotland as well, I remember using swizz.

ssd · 18/05/2020 23:00

Weird. Dh from there, he's never heard of it either.

ChinookPilotsGoVertical · 18/05/2020 23:04

I heard swizz as a kid in Cornwall. Mind you, my gran was Scots so...
Our usage was different though - we'd always say such & such was a swizz, rather than we'd been swizzed. Same meaning but used about the item /deal/offer, rather than the person.
George MacDonald Fraser used swizz to mean stitch up /rip off /con in one of his stories & it doesn't get much more Scots than that...

PerkingFaintly · 18/05/2020 23:07

Yy, Chinook. "It's a swizz".

PerkingFaintly · 18/05/2020 23:08

Frequently: "Argh, swizz!"

Scbchl · 18/05/2020 23:10
