I don't understand these instructions... Confused

How much washing powder do I need?

It depends how hard or soft your water is and how dirty the clothes are.

overwork · 18/05/2020 19:28

Did it come with one of those plastic cups? I use 1/2 to 2/3rds of that cup thingy depending on how full the load isa. I ignore the box. I'm sure it tells you to use more so you buy more!

Dualipa · 18/05/2020 19:29

I get that but I want to know how much I need to measure out for a normal wash on average. Like in grams instead of mls?

Dualipa · 18/05/2020 19:29

No cup in the box unfortunately :(

I don’t measure it, I just pour it in..

Glowcat · 18/05/2020 19:31

The harder the water in your area and the dirtier the clothes are, the more you use. It’s a table. Very hard water and medium soiling of clothes is 140.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 18/05/2020 19:31

Do people even read the box? I never have, I fill an old yoghurt pot and chuck it in, clothes come out clean. Yes I’m a rubbish adult

Glowcat · 18/05/2020 19:32

Have you got an old Calpol spoon?

Dualipa · 18/05/2020 19:33

140 What tho?

Yes I have a calpol syringe thing?

OP posts:
Glowcat · 18/05/2020 19:34

It says 100ml weighs 65g

Glowcat · 18/05/2020 19:36

So either weigh out 65g or use your Calpol syringe to measure it in ml

NannyR · 18/05/2020 19:37

Do you have a measuring jug to measure out the volume in mls? I do that the first time then put the powder in an old yoghurt pot and mark the level with a sharpie then use that as my scoop.

Merigoround · 18/05/2020 19:37

I use an old measurer out of a previous box.Usually bung less than 1 scoop into the drawer for a full wash. You never need as much as the box says.
Ive yet to have to rewash anything because it wasnt clean enough.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 18/05/2020 19:39

You can ask them to send you a weird thing to measure it. It took ages when I asked.

I use 100ml ish for my 8kg drum. Medium water hardness.

BlackWhitePurple · 18/05/2020 19:40

I'd throw in 100ml and see what happens. Unless your stuff is really dirty, in which case put a bit more in. I always assume my water is "medium" because I've no idea how to find out how hard it is.

You can usually order a measuring scoop - there'll be a number on the side of the box to call, and they'll send you one.

If you have one of those little medicine cups, you know the plastic ones with 5ml and 10ml marked? You could chuck 10 scoops of that size into a glass or something to get a container that's about the right size (make sure you wash it really well afterwards).

Mustbetimeforachange · 18/05/2020 19:40

Calpol syringe? They hold 5ml of liquid not 100mL of powder!
Just use a yoghurt pot or measuring jug. There's probably a number on the box to get a cup. You won't need as much as they say anyway.

jomaIone · 18/05/2020 19:41

How the heck can you measure powder with a bloody Calpol syringe?

The conversion is there 100ml = 65g so just work out how much that in and weigh it out on some scales??

We have soft water here, and I use the liquid measurement cup from fabric softener to do a full cup per wash.

Glowcat · 18/05/2020 19:43

I thought it was liquid!

Oblomov20 · 18/05/2020 19:43

Calpol syringe? Hmm

Ninkanink · 18/05/2020 19:44

Is your washing usually very dirty? If so, look at the above table. If not, look at the table above. Do you live in a soft water/hard water area - look at the above table. Once you know how much you should be using, find whatever scoop or cup you’ll be using, and weigh out some washing powder until you get the relevant amount. Then mark the cup to the required level.

It’s onlh a guideline anyway, not some kind of hard and fast rule you have to follow. You can generally use a lot less than you think, though. Especially with powder, which is more effective than liquid/gel detergent.

sylbunny · 18/05/2020 19:46

If you've got a shot glass somewhere they usually hold 50ml. So 2 shot glasses of the powder. I usually use the scoop from a box of vanish and just do one and a bit.

Tentatively · 18/05/2020 19:48

I use a lot less than it says. I read somewhere that you rarely need more than a tablespoon or two of powder if you are in a soft water area.

Using too much doesn't always make your clothes cleaner and can actually have the opposite effect. Half of it ends up putting a layer of gunk in the pipes and the drum anyway.

bluefoxmug · 18/05/2020 19:49

I have an old measuring jug from back in the day when they where still part of the pack.
but you can use a measuring cup that has ml
on it.

jomaIone · 18/05/2020 19:53

@glowcat 🤣 even if you did, there is still only 5ml in a Calpol syringe so would be at least 20 painstaking schooshes haha

bluefoxmug · 18/05/2020 19:55

140ml is a little more than half a cup if you have a cup measurement
