Holiday in Anglesey

We’re thinking of going to Anglesey on holiday, at the end of August. If we’re allowed to go on holiday by then .

Just wondering if anyone had any tips on things to do, places to stay and eat?

Will be 2 adults, 3 and 9 year old girls.

Now she is a bit older, we still love Anglesey but tend to do more coast walks... visiting Newborough beach is a favourite: www.visitwales.com/product/1821332

Closed of course at the moment but when open it has lovely grounds and a fascinating history.

Moelfre is where we stayed when I was a child, and I loved it there, the smooth stoned beach, the ice creams, although Ligwy beach was always my favourite.

I’ve name changed so I’m not outed! Please be aware that BeauMaris locals have been less than welcoming of tourists on their Facebook page. A lot of negativity regarding tourists. My mother (in her sixties) was on the FB group and was so upset by what she’s read that she’s said she will never return, same for a few of her friends too. It’s a shame as she’s been going every year at least twice since she was a little girl.

Love Anglesey. Just into the mainland you have GreenWood Family Park and Caenarfon Castle too which would be great at your kids’ ages.

We aren’t booking anything yet, it’s just nice to have something positive to plan 😁. We’re going to see how things pan out over the next couple of months and hopefully get a last minute Airbnb, if things have calmed down. We definitely don’t want to go somewhere we don’t feel welcome but also don’t want to book anything abroad in case there is a 2nd spike and we get stuck there. We’ve already had a week in Portugal, over Easter, cancelled and our anniversary weekend away to Dublin has also just been cancelled (end of June).

Worst case scenario we can do a proper staycation and book a week off and stay at home. Do daytrips and picnics to NT places. In the meantime I’m going to read up on the above suggestions and hope that we’ll get a holiday this year!

My sister lives on Anglesey and I get so jealous every time I visit! Pili palas is good if you have little ones. And the sea zoo. Tbh I've not come across a bit I haven't liked!

I love Anglesey and rent a holiday home in Red Wharf Bay.

I don't do anything which is particularly child friendly though.

Traeth Ora, the next beach over from Lligwy, is absolutely wonderful and relatively unpopulated because you have to walk down a cliff path to get to it. My aunt used to have a house on Mynydd Bodafon so we went there a lot.

Rhosneigr has gorgeous beaches, great little shops, lovely places to eat and a fabulous Artisan market every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. Also has a kite surfing school. Would highly recommend you visit.

I might get some free time if DP does something active with the DC. Are there any gallery / museum type places you would recommend?

There's a gallery at Oriel Mon, Llangefni, a small maritime museum in Holyhead, there's the Stone Science museum near Pentraeth and another gallery at Oriel Tegfryn, Menai Bridge.

Another vote for Oriel Mon, Llangefni.
The lifeboat station at Moelfre has an interesting display, although not very big. Helen's Wool Shop in Moelfre is a fabulous old fashioned wool shop and Helen is so helpful.
Lastra Farm has decent accomodation and we've had some good meals in their restaurant.
We started visiting my friend on Anglesey nearly 30 years ago and for the last 10 years we've had a static caravan there.
We love it and are really missing visiting, although we understand why.
Hope you manage to visit this summer, TazSyd. My only warning is, it'll steal a piece of your heart and you won't be able to resist going back!

In addition to everything described here: Parys mountain. An old copper mine now an amazing lunaresque landscape. No idea why it isn't crawling with tourists.

OP, there is some negativity towards tourists on Anglesey at the moment as @SausagesAndChipsAhoy has pointed out but that is purely because of the current situation and the fact that the islanders don't think it's fair that people are visiting when they could bring the virus with them. The local health services simply cannot cope with extra residents during the pandemic. I've seen enough on MN to know the feelings are the same in other tourist areas such as Cornwall.

It doesn't help when there are incidents like one reported today where 3 vehicles of one family decided to visit Anglesey from Manchester. We are still under lockdown in Wales and some people are choosing to ignore this and laughingly pretend they don't know.

Once the worst of this is over and tourism can resume I am sure that the people of Anglesey will be very happy to have tourists back again. Tourism is a major part of the income on the island and it is not something that they would want to lose.

As another poster said, you will fall in love with Anglesey and you will wonder why you never came before and will definitely return again and again.

We once went to the most amazing beach on Anglesey. Can't remember what it was called but we found it accidentally when we went the wrong way after visiting the sea zoo. It was amazing!

Yes, we wouldn’t go now. We’re hoping things will be back to normalish by the end of summer but if things are still like they are now, we won’t go. In the meantime, it’s nice to have a holiday to plan, even if we end up going next year.

@VioletBlueBug It's so strange to hear it described like that as 30 years ago it was hell on earth. I used to be dragged there as a teenager and hated it, boring wasn't the word 🤣. It's very different now though. Who would have thought!

I think you should leave Anglesey alone for the foreseeable future. Life won’t be back to normal in August and the U.K. beauty spots will have difficulty coping if everyone descends upon them.
