Tesco scan as you shop

Planning to do this for the first time tomorrow. From what I've found on their site it looks as though I don't need to register for it, just scan my clubcard to start. Does that seem right? Any hints to make life easier?

Yes just scan your card. You'll probably be picked the first few times for a check by staff who will scan a few items from your bags. Not sure if they'll be doing it in the current climate though.

Bag as you shop, I've seen some weirdos doing it after they shop, why would you even do that?

StealthPolarBear · 17/05/2020 20:12

Thanks
Why do they only scan a few items? I assumed the point of being checked was to make sure you'd scanned everything!
Definitely planning to pack as I go. Thank you

They scan to random things to check that you had scanned them.

ThinkPink71 · 17/05/2020 20:14

Just to make sure you have scanned everything they just choose sporadic items :) I imagine it would take ages to check them all.

Its miles easier than doing the traditional route :)

Phillipa12 · 17/05/2020 20:16

They pick about 5 random items just to check, sometimes its a full rescan but its rare. Just remember to scan every item individually even if you buy 2 of the same thing. And yes they are still doing the random spot checks.

Sparklingbrook · 17/05/2020 20:19

You will never go back to regular shopping. Easy, quick and no conveyor and handling your shopping 3 times.

I do Self Scan at Waitrose with the App on my mobile (avoiding using the scanner altogether) and it's just brilliant especially since CV hit.

If you want to change your mind you have to scan the item to take it off before you put it back. Also the running total really helps if you have a budget in mind.

nettytree · 17/05/2020 20:21

My local tesco were recently rescanning everything rather than a few as they had a lot of chancers in. I use it as I find it an easier way to budget my shopping.

"Just remember to scan every item individually even if you buy 2 of the same thing"
That's the sort of thing that's really helpful thank you, as well as the advice about changing my mind, hadn't thought of that.
I agree, I'll never go back. Every time I go in I kick myself for not remembering to sign up before I left the house (which was how I assumed it worked)

Also, put aside anything with security tags on, as you'll need to remember to get those removed. The till will ask you and automatically summon an assistant for you. You will also need to get alcohol authorised as usual.

avroroad · 17/05/2020 20:45

You should get a full scan twice a year. Apart from that it is very random. Sometimes they will scan 5 things, sometimes 10. First shop will get you a check. The more you use it the less you will get checked.

PleasantVille · 17/05/2020 20:48

Just remember to scan every item individually even if you buy 2 of the same thing

You don't have to do that, if you buy 3 cartons of milk, scan the first one 3 times and then put the others in the trolley, that's much quicker, why would you need to scan each one, the barcode is the same on them all.

You should scan, say different flavour yoghurts individually as they might not have the same bar code but not identical products , why do you do that?

avroroad · 17/05/2020 20:51

Yes for multiples of the same item you do not need to scan individually.

shelikesemwithamoustache · 17/05/2020 20:52

I’ve never had a full scan other than the time my daughter did the scanning for me, got to the till and we were picked for a regular service check and the first item the man checked hadn’t been scanned. A cucumber. They then scanned the whole trolley. Thank god that was the only unscanned item. I went very red. I was checked every shop after that for a while, but only for a few items. I’ve scan as you shopped every week in lock-down, far easier. Plus go to the shop at night, totally empty and loads of bargains - no people and no queues.

PleasantVille · 17/05/2020 20:56

I haven't had a full scan but I have seen other shoppers have them but obviously I don't know why.

ipswichwitch · 17/05/2020 20:57

It’s great, just pack as you go, then pay and you’re done. It’s a doddle.
Unless you give the scanner to my youngest son, because he just wants to help. Never ever do that. I got half way round the shop before I realised he’d been scanning stuff on the shelves at random that we didn’t put in the trolley. I had to ask a lovely shop assistant to wipe everything off the scanner so I could start again and rescan everything in my trolley (of course, it was a big shop 🙄). He’s been banned from even looking at the scanner ever since.

ForeverBubblegum · 17/05/2020 20:58

If you buy clothes they will have security tags on, so make sure you get someone to remove. I ended up with loads of tagged clothes the first few times, didn't set off alarms on the way out but found tags I got once home.

notthemum · 17/05/2020 20:59

@Oculus. Just answering your question. I shop at Asda. Put some things direct into the bags and some in the trolley as I go round. This is because some items are for another household who are disabled and vulnerable and unable to go themselves. So as I walk round the shop their stuff goes in a bag and then I will know how much it has cost so I can let them know and going through the self scanning checkout you have to pay all at once. So I need to scan mine after theirs. Hope that clears it up for you.

MissusMaker · 17/05/2020 22:00

In our local store the one way system has made accessing scan-as-you-shop scanners tricky; there is now a member of staff near the entrance, they take your clubcard (mines on my keys), scan for you and bring over the scanner. Might be different where you are but just incase.

Very, very occasionally I get something that won't scan - either because of an awkwardly placed barcode or because of a computer error, just put them to one side and let the checkout person know to scan them for you.

Good luck! I get cross now when I go to a store without self scan Smile

CoffeeRunner · 17/05/2020 22:04

I use it all the time. So much easier.

The routine check asks for something like 10% of your items to be scanned. I think in 5s. So 5, 10 or 15. If they pick up something you have failed to scan correctly then they will have to rescan the entire shop.

You will have a routine check the first time, just to make sure you use it right. I’ve been routine checked lots of time’s but never had to have the whole lot rescanned.

OculusThrift · 17/05/2020 22:09

@notthemum I understand that reasoning, I'm talking about those with full on trolling who pack their bags at the till after paying.

OculusThrift · 17/05/2020 22:09

Trolly*

Secil · 17/05/2020 22:19

You can either go on a normal till.and give the scanner to the person on the checkout, or go to a self service, then point & shoot your scanner at the barcode on the till (that's how ours works)

We also have to park our trolley in the little bay next to the till.

Dont be that person that double parks Grin

They will help you out anyway.

Peonyinbloom · 17/05/2020 22:53

I thought you did have to scan everything individually? I’m sure I asked the first time I did it and the Tesco lady said you need to scan every item, even multiples.
Gah! I’ve been wasting precious seconds of my life! No more.

AdobeWanKenobi · 17/05/2020 22:58

You will never go back to regular shopping

First shop - full scan
Second - full scan
Third - machine locked, woman manning it shrugged, pointed to the till and intimated I needed to unload the lot to a normal checkout then left.
Fourth - partial scan
Fifth - partial scan, took several minutes for supervisor to appear.

Never bothered again. Might be just my local but far quicker at the till than this.

MrsEricBana · 17/05/2020 22:59

You do have to scan every item. PP just means if you put in 3 packs of identical biscuits, bip the first one 3 times, don't line up all 3 and scan them once each.
