Tesco scan as you shop

Planning to do this for the first time tomorrow. From what I've found on their site it looks as though I don't need to register for it, just scan my clubcard to start. Does that seem right? Any hints to make life easier?

If you get selected for checking - it is OK to ask the staff to sanitise their hands before they start rummaging through your shopping. They have hand gels etc. available and are fine being asked.

@PerspicaciaTick.

But utterly pointless as you have no idea how many previous shoppers have handled those goods prior to you selecting them.

Sparklingbrook · 18/05/2020 00:26

I have been doing self scan for years and have had about 3 checks where they have just scanned a few items, it's never been a problem.

If you do a lot of taking things out and off the handset and putting them back as you go around that may make a difference.
The random check would only be touching your groceries as a cashier would putting it through a manned till.

Be aware that some loose items have the scan code on the price ticket on the shelf e.g loose bread and rolls and you have to weigh loose fruit and veg on a scale and get a label. Quite frequently the scales are broken in the fruit and veg aisles and you have to sort it out as an non-scanned item at the till.

Thanks everyone, really helpful. I'll report back

Make sure you check what you have scanned if using your phone (not sure if Tesco have this, but Sainsbury's do). I noticed that I had double scanned some items and had to then get customer service to refund me...total pain.

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/05/2020 08:47

I get a full scan every shop so I stopped bothering.

AlCalavicci · 18/05/2020 08:55

It is so much easier and quicker .
Don't forget to weigh loose fruit and veg and put the sticker on the bags.
You need to hold the scanner about 4 inches away from the item , it takes a bit of getting use to judging it but by the time you are halfway through your shopping you will of mastered it.
To clarify if you are buying 3 identical things scan the 1st one three times and put all 3 in your bag without scanning the 2nd and 3rd .
If you change your mind about something or scan it twice by mistake tap the 'remove item' in the screen and rescan the item it will then ask you if you want to remove the item , tap yes and it will be taken off.

When you get to the till scan the bar code ( usually just above the screen ) and watch all your items add up on the screen .
Pay and go Smile

Let us know how you get on .

I always online shop once a week but had to go out today for some extra bits because the next delivery isn’t till Thursday and I did a scan shop in Tesco for the first time after reading this thread, it was brilliant and so much easier thank you everyone for your advice Smile

ITonyah · 18/05/2020 19:36

I do the sainsbury's one and it's really good

AlCalavicci · 18/05/2020 22:39

Dont worry it is easy to forget to scan things sometimes , thats why they do the checks.
You will get use to it after a while .

WitchyMoo · 18/05/2020 22:50

If I buy 3 of exactly the same item I scan one item 3 times but if they are different flavours , i.e. Youghurt scan each one individually, the first few times you'll probably get stopped for a random service check , this steps up again Christmas time , scan and put in a bag , I leave booze separately , don't know why , ' just in case ' I don't know in case of what but spirits and high price items have tags on these need to be separated as they need to de tag it
Also if you have a lot of deletions on the scanner this will activate a random service check too . I noticed this
If you forget to scan something when they do the check , this results in a full service check . It's a pain when you've got LOADS of shopping

Hi, does anyone know if the Tesco Scan and Go app works in the UK? It only seems to be for some European countries. Thanks

The80sweregreat · 24/07/2020 19:11

I feel bad using the machines as it's someone's job and pension that is being replaced by doing it myself!
You get checked if you buy alcohol or things with tags so they still need to employ staff to hang around that section , but there is no doubt it's affected jobs in retail and Sainsbury’s also have them now where I live.
Strangely enough , I nearly always get a special check up with in tesco ( where they randomly make sure it's all been scanned) but not at all in Sainsbury’s! Very odd.
I'm very careful to scan everything and I like that you can pack on the way round.
It does speed up the whole shopping experience which is pretty awful just now.
Sometimes the machines are a bit temperamental but mostly it goes smoothly.
