What restaurant dishes are you missing, and would like to recreate at home?

Really missing going out to eat. Also trying to save money, so no take aways.

I love cooking, but can't seem to get the authentic flavour of Indian food. What dishes are you craving?

Pizza express pizza or salad but mainly, someone else cooking and cleaning up. And the thinking. The endless thinking of what's for the next meal

I always say that the curries I cook at home are as good as anything we ever order as takeaway (although we do still have takeaways too). Nigella's Mattar Paneer is really good, or the paneer masala in Fresh India.

I'm missing really good falafel and fatoush from a local Syrian place, and a couple of things from a local Vietnamese place, especially cauliflower wings and a banana blossom curry.

I would kill for a dosa.

Search vegrecipesofindia or Tarla Dalal (the chefs Indian women often turn to). You will laugh at your comment when you start cooking authentic Indian (and Indian fusion) curries and realise how much better they are.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/05/2020 17:03

They might be better, but my comment was comparing stuff with local takeaways. They're really nice recipes.

FauxFox · 16/05/2020 17:13

@OnlyFoolsnMothers Starbucks have opened drive thru and some shops for takeaway so if there is one nearby you could get a treat Smile

FauxFox · 16/05/2020 17:14

I’d like a Greg’s vegan sausage roll, so wrong yet so right Grin

crispsahoy · 16/05/2020 17:21

Our favourite restaurant has been open for delivery's, DH & I had one for our anniversary a few weeks ago. It was beautiful but not quite the same.
I'm enjoying making some new things but finding the family aren't interested, today I'm making Ramen at dc's so will see how that goes.

NoWordForFluffy · 16/05/2020 17:23

@WhatPollyForgot, you need a kit from www.thespicery.com. We never get takeaway curry anymore as we can make them just as well at home.

LuckyMarmiteLover · 16/05/2020 17:25

Crispy beef from Koh Thai Tapas

Iadoremylabrador · 16/05/2020 17:27

TGI Friday's sesame chicken strips with fries and that Jack Daniels sauce 😍😋

There are loads of recipes online but I don't think it would taste the same. So haven't tried them. Annoying some TGI's are doing takeaway now but not the one where I live.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/05/2020 19:04

Faux Fox - with you on the Greggs vegan sausage rolls.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/05/2020 19:05

Had an emergency Iceland delivery a few weeks ago, and they do frozen Greggs vege pasties. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it!

Shockers · 16/05/2020 19:06

Salt and chilli tofu.

BirdieFriendReturns · 16/05/2020 19:30

Pizza Express padana pizza.
Starbucks caramel machiatto but they’ve reopened two stores near me so I have had two in two days! Yay
My favourite Indian restaurant is doing takeout. Chicken pasanda and peshwari naan
Subway cookies - had one yesterday!

nevergoingoutagain · 16/05/2020 19:35

We have been having "nandos"...while chicken and corn on the cob on the bbq, haloumi for the veggie, macho peas (butter, mint, chilli flakes) oven chips with spicy seasoning, olives, coleslaw etc etc.....so good and sooooo much cheaper! Will
Prob carry on tbh!

nevergoingoutagain · 16/05/2020 19:35

"Whole" chicken!

nevergoingoutagain · 16/05/2020 19:36

My kids are missing macdonalds 🙄 I'm glad they don't have it anymore. Dh always bloody buying it for them!

HighBrows · 16/05/2020 19:43

@borntohula McDonalds for me too.

I can cook restaurant standard food and do but my god I'd do anything for a McDonalds.

I'll be first in the queue when it opens.

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 16/05/2020 19:46

Tries cooking lots of fakeaways but not found one better than the original. Suspect it's lack of a bbq/grill as well as the home recipe bing more basic. Mm

TooMinty · 16/05/2020 19:46

Our favourite Indian restaurant is still delivering, thankfully! I made a fairly convincing fake McDs the other week - Lidl thin burgers, sesame buns, very finely chopped onion and ketchup mixed with mustard. Skinny fries. Enraged the kids by making them eat corn on the cob with it though!

Grumpylockeddownwoman · 16/05/2020 19:49

We have had quite a few takeaways so not missing those types - but miss things like a scallop starter, or a truly fabulous steak - I never think it’s quite the same at home.

Grumpylockeddownwoman · 16/05/2020 19:50

For anyone missing a McDonald’s breakfast - I highly recommend Tesco sausage patties

MarcelineMissouri · 16/05/2020 19:52

It’s not really following the recipe but we went to Pizza Express most weekends (dc 8+5) and now every Saturday night we have Pizza Express at home, dough balls and bruschetta, pizza (Tesco sell some actual pizza express ones) followed by some kind of dessert.
I can’t wait to be able to go to restaurants again Sad

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 16/05/2020 19:54

just someone else shopping cooking thinking, clearing up.

This. Especially the thinking.

waitingforadulthood · 16/05/2020 19:57

I can make sushi, but it’s a faff and impossible to make a good selection to serve just two people. So sushi.

Bigolgi and pot stickers from a tiny restaurant just outside my town.

Like others, and I’m not at all embarrassed, McDonald’s. A Big Mac meal, and the blessed silence of enjoying it in the car , whilst my children enjoy theirs behind me. We eat at the table and meals are sociable and chatty. A drive through and the silence of all eating at once, and then having no dishes to do, or even a bill to pay, you just drive on as though nothing happened. It was a treat before all of this. Now it would be a slice of heaven.
