Have you had contact from school re yr 10 and yr 12 going back - what have they said?

Our school has suggested small numbers of pupils at a time go back into the school for what seems to be 1-1 pastoral / tutorial sessions. This may be the first stage before small group teaching starts - but they are definitely just having very small numbers of pupils in at a time in the school.

Just wondering what other schools are doing to see if our school is just being very cautious or is typical of secondary schools.

We haven't heard anything about going back yet.

chomalungma · 16/05/2020 10:34

Thanks.
Has anyone else heard anything?

Yep, same as you. One to one tutorials first. Next steps being worked on. I'm quite happy with that!

I am a secondary school teacher and our plans have not yet been finalised, but the government wording about having 'some face to face contact' was I think carefully composed. Don't expect your children to return full-time, five days a week. Some kind of very small group system on a rota basis or 1:1 tutorials much more likely.

Comefromaway · 16/05/2020 11:20

2 hours per day in reduced size tutor groups for year 10 & subject groups for year 12. No social time. Stay in one classroom.

ProfessorHasturLaVista · 16/05/2020 11:23

No decision yet as safety of staff and pupils is paramount. My Yr12 will not be going in and I expect his teachers will be fine with that (no issues with motivation or work being submitted).

chomalungma · 16/05/2020 14:36

Thanks - anyone else

(I know I should have posted this in AIBU with a slightly different tone - would be guaranteed lots of replies and flowers)

But this is not an AIBU - more a what are other schools doing Grin

No decision yet, it’s definitely seen as an ambition for some contact, rather than a return to full time school.

Hoppinggreen · 16/05/2020 14:41

Heard nothing here but I know they are doing the Y7 transition remotely and close on 9th July anyway so I doubt they will reopen to Y10 until September

spacepoppers · 16/05/2020 14:51

Ours has said that whilst they appreciate the recommendations are for 'some face to face contact' before the end of the academic year for years 10 & 12, they do not feel it is safe to do so for staff or students, so won't be opening until they feel it can be done safely

Pandsbear · 16/05/2020 15:40

We just got an emailed form yesterday asking if we would send our yr10 child in with slot for name and YES or NO tick boxes.... I think they are gauging numbers. No further info and no box for comments!

chunkyriverfish · 16/05/2020 15:48

Had to complete survey about whether you (year 12) are shielding, have a family member shielding, how will you travel to and from sixth form.

Told to prepare to have some form of face to face and details to follow. The sixth form is in modern open building, no real tight corridors like a normal secondary school.

Livedandlearned · 16/05/2020 15:51

Same as Pandsbear also suggested that they will have groups of 8 and work alongside the work already set, supporting the students. They are working out the logistics now I guess

MrsAvocet · 16/05/2020 15:51

We've had a survey to complete and the face to face options range from one to one reviews with subject teachers to small group tutorials.

StellaDelMare · 16/05/2020 15:54

I teach in a FE college and they wanted us to prep to return on 1st June. As a department we have strongly put across our concerns about this and practical issues and we have been lucky enough that they have come back to us and said they will take this off the table as an option for the time being but will look at it at a later date.

ExclamationPerfume · 16/05/2020 17:13

I have one of each and have heard nothing.

User721 · 16/05/2020 17:15

Ive heard nothing from my yr10's school.

altmum · 16/05/2020 17:17

I have a year 12 DC and have not been told anything yet?

Notdonna · 16/05/2020 17:27

Not heard anything as yet re yr10 & yr12. Had a letter gauging yes/no re my Yr6 returning.

Windyatthebeach · 16/05/2020 17:28

None of our schools are going back at all until September at least.

TattiePants · 16/05/2020 17:30

This was in our school newsletter this week.
• We will have strict social distancing measures in place.
• Students will not follow their usual timetable.
• Cohorts will be split into smaller groups and attend on alternative sessions.
• The day will be shorter than the usual school day, allowing for staggered arrival and departure times.
• Class sizes will be no more than 10 pupils per class.
• Desks will be set 2 metres apart and facing the same direction.
• Students will not move around the building, but they will remain in one large classroom / learning area for each learning / support ‘session’.
• Sanitiser gel and wipes will be available for pupils and staff use in every classroom.

SleeplessWB · 16/05/2020 17:33

We are still planing but thinking of doing a 2 hour morning slot for Y10 (one subject per day) and the same in the afternoon for y12.

chomalungma · 16/05/2020 17:34

Interesting to hear what other schools are / aren't doing...

Our school is nursery through to sixth form. We are having all day online teaching now, but the school is keen to get the Y10 & 12s back. They had a meeting with parents from each year group via Zoom and subsequently sent all parents a survey about what they would be happy with. I think the 'face to face' is open to interpretation and as we are private maybe more loosely. I'm hoping at the very least back part time with perhaps ongoing online for those who can't physically go in for whatever reason, and priority to those really hands on classes like art, DT, sciences, drama and PE etc. The school had thought y10 and 12 would be one of the first to go back so I think had a lot of plans in place anyway (like outdoor learning etc).

lazylinguist · 16/05/2020 17:47

Ours is still working it out, but unless my dc's school (where my dh is also headteacher) offers a reasonable amount of proper GCSE lessons, taught by my y10 dd's actual teachers, I'm not really interested in sending her in tbh. She's doing absolutely fine with distance learning, has no need for a pastoral 1:1 or to go into school just for some face-to-face time.

That's not a criticism of what the school is offering btw - there's a limit to what they can do. But since students who do go in for these limited lessons will presumably have to carry on with distance learning for most of their work, I don't really see the point. (Except for kids who are desperate for the interaction or have parents who are really struggling supporting them at home).
