What would you do with an un-used room?

We have a room that just doesn't seem to have a purpose. It currently has the kids scooters in, a little desk (which they never sit at), and a pile of boardgames which we bring to the dining table to play.

So it's a bit.....useless. We have a guest room which has a workstation in it for me to WFH so there's no point having a proper office.

Its not even a bad room. Gets the morning sun. Nice big window. Fuck all purpose Grin

Wwyd?

I'd probably grow a lot of plants in it near the window.

CakeCakeCake21 · 15/05/2020 23:53

We have one of those. We put guinea pigs in there.
Put a piano in and call it a music room?

justasking111 · 15/05/2020 23:55

My friend had a room like this, beautiful bay window etc. used too be a breakfast room off a tiny kitchen when they extended it became redundant. Then she had the idea to turn it into the games/social room for the kids. Put in the biggest tv I have ever seen. x box playstation in there two sofas, throws, cushions. baskets for toys, games. The kids love it, their friends love it and best of all she has peace in the rest of the house.

FlibbertyGiblets · 15/05/2020 23:55

Rethink where to store the scooters. Relocate the desk.
Find a home for the board games.

Call the room The Library. Or how about the Map Room? Repurpose it accordingly.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/05/2020 23:57

The kids will eventually have it as a bit of a social room when they are teens with sofa etc but we are a good 6-8 years away at the moment.

Love the idea of having a Map Room! Grin

Yes to house plants.

Move the toys to the guest room, and use it as your office? It’s not set in stone which room you work from.

A reading room, again shift the toys. A second living room can be very therapeutic.

Depends what else you have / how many dc you have / how old they are / if you have hobbies that could do with space / if you all sit and 'watch a nice family film together, or are more like most families where people often want to watch different things - or someone wants to game, or read, or listen to music, or sit in silence when someone else is watching TV / whether the dc are needing homework space / whether anyone plays an instrument / etc etc

I could relocate the bookcases from the living room into there and buy a lovely armchair. Yy to the plants - they litter every bloody windowsill in the place so it's a nice idea to have them convene in one place.e

Well if you have children who play misic have it for that, hobby room, spare bedroom, homework room.

Purpletigers · 16/05/2020 00:00

Library or kids living room

CatOnLaptop · 16/05/2020 00:08

Library/second living room. Even before teen years it's great to have a second living room. I'm a reader and love old things. DH is a film buff and loves all things modern. We each get a room to indulge.

Frozade · 16/05/2020 00:11

I got a spare room when I put up a stud wall in a larger room, the small one is used as a mini library, couple of IKEA bookshelves and one of their small sofas. I love it

MsMarple · 16/05/2020 00:13

Craft room? I'd love to be able to use my sewing machine somewhere where I didn't have to tidy it away for dinner! But reading room sounds lovely too...

safariboot · 16/05/2020 00:13

Fill it with junk. That's what I would do.

converseandjeans · 16/05/2020 00:20

I would turn it into TV room with nice sofa (or sofa bed) & store games etc in there too. Then it can have Xbox or whatever in there too.
Is there room for your desk too? It would be nice to have space that isn't part of a bedroom?

Thistles24 · 16/05/2020 00:37

I had this, and just turned it into a “family room” aka a playroom with tv and sofa. So we tend to hang out there during the day, sofa is leather and floor is laminate- I don’t mind painting/play doh etc going on in there, any elaborate Lego games can be left set up and I just close the door and retreat to the proper sitting room at night, which has a nicer sofa and carpets and no toys lying about.

violetbunny · 16/05/2020 02:24

I turned one of our spare rooms into a dressing room. It has a beautiful dresser and large mirrors, and it houses most of my clothes, makeup (of which there is a vast amount Blush), shoes etc. It means I can get ready in peace in the morning without disturbing DP (as I'm usually the first one up).

Aclh13 · 16/05/2020 02:35

Children's lounge so yours becomes your own, computer/study room?, large walking dresser room?
If it was me however I'd turn it into a gaming and vlogging room for my needs

redbigbananafeet · 16/05/2020 02:39

A formal dining room?

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 16/05/2020 02:56

I’m a prepper, so you can imagine what I did with my unused room. Storage storage storage. Grin

managedmis · 16/05/2020 03:11

It's on the ground floor? Which room is it next to?

caramac04 · 16/05/2020 03:22

I’d have a multi gym in there. I’ve got one coming tomorrow and it’s going in the downstairs study Grin.
I’ve got to get rid of the treadmill but I can run outdoors.
I have been exercising using YouTube but whether in kitchen or lounge somebody else wants to be in there too and it drives me mad. Can’t wait to take over the study

PrimeraVez · 16/05/2020 03:23

Can you not just turn it into a proper playroom? Not sure how old your kids are but we have a couple of IKEA Kallax units in ours around the edge of the room and few bean bags etc.

Even if the kids don’t actually ‘play’ in there that much it’s nice to be able to have somewhere to chuck all their plastic wrap so it’s not in my lounge!

We have a small ‘spare’ room next to the downstairs bathroom and we call it the laundry room. We keep the Laundry baskets, a rail for ironing to hang on, the clothes horse, and a second fridge freezer in there, plus random crap like the buggy and buggy board in there.

We are looking at moving next month to a bigger place (rented) and it will have another room.
I’m thinking of using it as a sports/exercise room. DH can keep all of his golf crap in there and I can make an area with weights, a mat etc for the online classes I do.

AvalancheKit · 16/05/2020 06:24

Do what it seems most people have been doing - turn it into a mini cash and carry, stuffing it to the hilt with pasta, bags of flour and loo roll....!

Bluesheep8 · 16/05/2020 07:21

We have a book room. Built in bookshelves in alcoves and a day bed. No TV, it's purely a reading space.
