Does anyone actually get the washes it says on the packet of laundry liquid/powder/gel/ softener?
I know i put too much in but it never feels like enough if you just put one capful in?
Today i finished a bottle of comfort, i only got it last week and have prob done 12 washes with it....it says 38 on the bottle!!!

I get more... just put a splash in... I may be a slattern Grin

I don't really count, but a bottle of fabric softener lasts us months! I find if I put the recommended amount in, clothes feel a bit greasy and smell too strong, I just put a little dash in every other time.

ActuallyItsEugene · 12/05/2020 21:20

Never Blush

My washing machine can be temperamental with how/when it decides to start sucking in the fabric softener so I keep an eye on it and top it up when needed.
I was distracted the other day so was topping up at the same time as doing a million other things and, when the wash had finished, I realised I'd used nearly half a bottle. Blush

I do usually manage to get 10 - 12 washes out of a normal sized bottle of comfort.
I do have 6 different scents on the go though, which get rotated, so sometimes they last a bit longer.

I usually use about 50% of the recommended amount. Our clothing isn’t heavily soiled or smelly, so half a capful is plenty. So we generally get a lot more washes than it says.

CMOTDibbler · 12/05/2020 21:35

I use about half the recommended amount too, so get more

Francina670 · 12/05/2020 21:37

No because that number is based on washing lightly soiled, smaller loads in a soft water area. All my washing is filthy and I have very hard water.

PatsyJStone · 12/05/2020 21:50

No. Must be bored as I was looking at this the past week too, tried putting a little less in but no chance it will last 25 washes, never mind 30 plus.

Dangermouse80 · 12/05/2020 22:21

Never, normally half the number of washes. However live in hard water area and washing kids clothes so putting twice the recommended amount in each time to get good results.

H1978 · 12/05/2020 22:24

No I’m really heavy handed with it that’s why I use pods because then I’d get the actual number of washes stated Grin

DelurkingAJ · 12/05/2020 22:28

Yes, now that we use powder. I changed (recommended here) and the washing is as clean with about 2/3 of a dose. We’re in a hard water area and DSs are pretty mucky as you’d expect from a 4 and a 7 year old!

INeedNewShoes · 12/05/2020 22:28

I use half the amount it says on the box and it still seems to clean. If I use the stated amount I notice that the water still looks very bubbly at the end of the rinse stage.

ballsdeep · 12/05/2020 22:30

Mine lasts about 10-12 washes

Likethebattle · 12/05/2020 22:38

I always use way less than it recommends.

PigletJohn · 12/05/2020 22:39

That would explain why so many people have washing machines that, on the inside, are caked with a smelly sludge of congealed detergent and fabsoft.

Put some white towels in on a hot hot hot wash with NO powder, NO fabsoft, NO detergent or gel.

If the water goes grey and foams up, that's the sludge dissolving and washing out. Do it again until it stops. Add half a cup of Washing Soda Crystals to clean it quicker.

Your towels will come out cleaner, whiter and softer than they went in.

(white towels because they will withstand a hot hot hot wash and you don't have any fading to worry about).

Ninkanink · 12/05/2020 22:44

Oh yes soda crystals in every wash really make a difference.

I also use washing powder every so often as it’s much better for the machine, and a 90 degree cleaning wash a couple of times a year.

PenguinsRule · 12/05/2020 22:57

I get probably 4 time more washes that it says in the bottle. I dilute mine every time. It’s so strong smelling otherwise and very very bubbly at the end of the washes. Two small kids here too and our washing is perfectly clean. If a dirtier load sometimes I’ll put two capfuls (if my diluted solution) in instead. As a PP mentioned how are your machines not full of sludge if you use so much and your clothes must smell so strong?

Mustbetimeforachange · 12/05/2020 22:59

I use half the amount (hard water area). Run a maintenance wash once a month.

Karlkennedyslovechild · 12/05/2020 23:04

Yup I use less then recommended And I’m in a hard water area.
I read that actually the agitation of the washing machine does most of the work so you could not put any in and still get stuff clean. Putting in ‘a bit for luck’ extra means there’s less friction between clothes and can mean they come out less clean as well as gunking up your machine.

Electrical · 12/05/2020 23:09

A box of washing powder and a standard size bottle of fabric softener both last over a year for me. A quarter of a cap of fabric softener (but none for towel washes), about a fifth of a scoop of powder per wash. Only need to do one load of washing a week.

Hercwasonaroll · 12/05/2020 23:09

I get more washes than the box says out of powder. At least half again.

Hate softener, what is the point of it? Never used it and don't feel like starting.

SephrinaX · 12/05/2020 23:21

Bit like on food packets when it says "serves 4".

Lol, no.

ActuallyItsEugene · 12/05/2020 23:47

I use a full measuring cup of liquid detergent too, but I love my washing to smell strongly of detergent/fabric conditioner - especially bedding.

My washing machine isn't caked up with anything though.
Just wipe round the seals/drum after each wash, run a hot wash with Dettol washing machine cleaner once a month and leave the door open between uses.

PigletJohn · 12/05/2020 23:56

Try the towel test.

You can't see the sludge in the drum.

ActuallyItsEugene · 13/05/2020 00:31

Piglet I do a wash like that every week or so to boil wash tea towels.
A minuscule amount of foam and no grey tinge.

I think the cleaner works a treat, at least for now anyway.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/05/2020 00:43

P. John is right, you don’t see the sludge or build-up.
My machine looked fine, but I did a 90 deg wash with just soda crystals, no washing, and the amount of foam was unbelievable.
Did it a 2nd time, there was still quite a bit.
I now use a small amount of powder (used to use pods) and soda crystals, no fabsoft.
Washing is just as clean.
