Do you have a dressing table? Come talk to me.

I’m in two minds on whether to get a dressing table or not. I currently get ready in the spare room and I’m sick of seeing all my crap stuff, left on the bed.

A couple of questions for those of you who have one:

Do you use it?
Does it keep your stuff tidy or is it just another place to leave things on top of?
Where did you get it?

I’ve been looking online at a few, but nothing has really caught my eye at the moment. I don’t want a cheap one that looks like it will fall apart, but I also don’t want to spend £500+ for something I will never bloody use.

TIA.

I have one in my room at the moment, it’s being used as a sewing table though! It’s far more practical for me to stick all my skincare, hair and make up on the fitted shelves behind the bed.
Sorry, I’m not much help here.

Sevencats · 12/05/2020 16:59

Really wanted one. Got one. Never used it. I don’t wear make up and I can’t dry my hair as I have bad hands. A total waste of money Blush

Wherearemyminions · 12/05/2020 17:00

I have one but have baskets on the top to put stuff in rather than just having hairbrushes, perfume bottles etc just loose. Easier to clean and just looks tidier I think.

Yes but white ikea with drawer. I love it. I do have lots if make up and skin creams etc

GallusAlice79 · 12/05/2020 17:03

Yes, IKEA...sounds like same as nitgel's. I added 3 drawers at the side and 2 underneath, plus a mirror that lights up.

I love my whole set up, keeps everything tidy and within easy reach.

I have one from Wayfair, it's beautiful to look at and artfully arranged Grin but it doesn't get used. It just sits there looking nice.
My daughter has one and hers is used every morning and evening, it's always covered in makeup, wipes, coins, brushes etc and looks like a total mess. But it does its job.

CrimsonCattery · 12/05/2020 17:21

I use the top of my chest of drawers as it is the right height to stand in front of. I have hung a mirror on the wall over the top so it works like a dressing table. I then do my face and get dressed standing in front of it every morning. Very convenient.

GigiLamour · 12/05/2020 17:37

I have one and use it daily - wouldn't be without it!

IMO it doesn't need to be big or expensive, but drawers are crucial. All my make-up and hair stuff that I use every day is kept in the top drawer, most of it in a compartmented box to keep it tidy. I sit down at the dressing table, open the top drawer and do my titivating. I pick up stuff straight out of the drawer to use and put it straight back in there after use - nothing gets put down on the dressing table itself. (Best to have the drawers on your right if you're right-handed, and vice versa.) The only things that are kept on top of the dressing table are a small pedestal mirror and my hairdryer (best to put the dressing table near a plug socket for the hairdryer). So it's tidy and easy to clean, and stuff doesn't get dusty.

I find I need a little pedestal mirror for close makeup work, as the big dressing table mirror can be too far away when you sit at the table (although it's good for seeing your hair). Depends on the table.

Other drawers have scent, 'special' makeup and skincare / hair accessories which I use less often, etc.

I put my dressing table in front of a north facing window, if possible, for maximum unforgiving daylight. Obviously you also need good artificial light of some kind for using it on winter mornings/evenings!

God, I love my dressing table. I don't even wear much makeup, but it's just so handy to have a proper place for it.

GigiLamour · 12/05/2020 17:43

By the way, my first dressing table was £30 (second hand, worn but good quality). It was great. You could always buy a cheap one second hand or from Ikea, see whether you use it, then get a fancy one if you find you do get on with them.

givemecrisps · 12/05/2020 17:45

I didn't have one for years!! Then I got one from an inheritance (a beautiful Gplan one) and I absolutely loved it! We have a 4 bed house and used to use the fitted wardrobes in our spare room so didn't need a wardrobe in our bedroom so my huge dressing table took pride of place. Before that I used to sit on the floor with a mirror but had everything in a basket and used to make a mess every time.
Now our second child is on the way and the fitted wardrobes are in what would be the nursery. Our 4th bedroom is for the cats (🙈) and a fold up bed now. I was really upset when I realised I would have to give up my dressing table. My husband then worked out he could make me a small corner one and I'm so glad we went for it. I have a drawer for make up, hair stuff, and any extras I buy (multipacks shampoo etc). Then I have my make up brushes on top.

I'd say get one. They are good for the soul!

Tiredmum100 · 12/05/2020 17:46

Yes I use mine every day to do my hair and make up.

maloofhoof · 12/05/2020 17:48

I have an Ikea one.
Use it every day.

kerkyra · 12/05/2020 17:52

Never had one until two years ago and now I use it every day.
Lots of drawers to keep hair dryer, make up,cotton wool etc in and the top just has the mirror,a bottle of perfume and two little glass dishes with a ring and hair band in.
It's from the Cotswold company (Chantilly white)

FlamingoAndJohn · 12/05/2020 17:56

Yes. I use it every day.

Thank-you!! Seems they come in use then. I will be purchasing one - now just got to find one I like.

I have a chest of drawers (dresser?) with the top drawers for make up and skincare. The rest have my jammies and socks in it! I have a mirror on top and jewellery, but I can't 'sit' at it, it just looks nice. Would love a little glam dressing table one day.

firstimemamma · 12/05/2020 18:04

Ive got the 'malm' one I think it's called - from ikea, plain and white with a glass top. Bought it in 2015 so no idea if they still sell it. I really love it and would recommend having a dressing table. I use it less now that I have ds but before I had him I used it daily! Just somewhere nice to sit and get ready.

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 12/05/2020 18:06

I love mine. I don’t take much time getting ready but I sit at it and paint my nails or whatever. It has a stool at the perfect height too

bravotango · 12/05/2020 18:09

Had the same dilemma - eventually bought a bureau style writing desk. Doesn't matter how messy it looks with makeup etc - I just close the lid!

cleanasawhistle · 12/05/2020 18:11

I have a dressing table with 6 drawers.
Use it everyday and I love it.
Have had it a few years and can't think where I got it from

marblesgoing · 12/05/2020 18:11

Got one. Use it every day.

Have little boxes on it with hair stuff, make up,creams, hairdryer, etc.

Have drawers on the left with meds and loads of other crap Grin

Use mine every day and wouldn't be without it

nitgel · 12/05/2020 18:15

I have muji stackable drawers under my ikea table www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/malm-dressing-table-white-10203610/ they fit well and come in a few sizes

HasaDigaEebowai · 12/05/2020 18:16

Mine is a massive victorian one (2m wide) from ebay £150. It has drawers and cupboards and takes all my beauty stuff plus has plenty of space for lighting. I've also just acquired a 1.5m wide mirror to go over it (again an ebay bargain £17 for an enormous mahogany mirror) and a glass art deco dressing table set (two candle sticks, a glass tray and three lidded jars) to put frequent use things on (£20 ebay)

I try to buy as much of our furniture as possible second hand. Better for the planet and looks far nicer IMO.

myangelalex · 12/05/2020 18:17

No, waste of space.
