WARNING - PHOTOS! Attention dentists - what is this on DD's gum?

DMCWelshcakes · 11/05/2020 15:26

DiddyDragon (11.8 yrs) is complaining that she has a painful lump above her teeth on her gum.

Any dentists/dental nurses/wise oldsages out there that could give us a clue what it is?

It almost looks like another tooth coming through above the existing ones.

Has she got all her adult teeth?

LoseLooseLucy · 11/05/2020 15:30

It does look like another tooth, I had one there I had to have removed when I was younger.

I'm not a dentist but I have an 'extra' tooth which looks like that. It was spotted on an x-ray. I was told to leave it until it caused pain and then it would need to be removed.

Thelnebriati · 11/05/2020 15:32

It could be a retained baby tooth being expelled, or an extra tooth.

RoseDog · 11/05/2020 15:33

Possibly an eye tooth that's doing its own thing, not a dentist just the mother of 2 orthodontic visiting teens!

FOF44 · 11/05/2020 15:35

My DS had a couple of teeth come down in front/on top of his milk teeth rather than pushing them out in the normal way. Not a huge issue tho, the milk tooth goes eventually and the new tooth slots in.

DMCWelshcakes · 11/05/2020 15:36

I don't think she's quite got all her adult teeth yet. Both DC were phenomenally late in getting any teeth at all (over 12 months) so I don't think they're done with all the falling out & new ones coming through yet.

What's an eye tooth?

inwood · 11/05/2020 15:37

Eye tooth is a canine.

It definitley looks like a tooth to me. Also not a dentist but I had the same and it had to be removed.

Footywife · 11/05/2020 15:38

My son had this at a similar age. The dentist pulled the tooth under it to allow it to come through. Suffered no problems at all after it.

MillyMollyMardy · 11/05/2020 16:04

That's a tooth, having looked at your picture it looks like she has a baby tooth below it. So most likely the adult tooth coming through to replace it.

Pawsin · 11/05/2020 16:19

How long has she had it OP? I had a similar looking lump on my gum when I was younger, which turned out to be a gum boil. The white could be the head of the boil. Not a dentist though so it could well be a tooth!

The erupting UR5

DMCWelshcakes · 11/05/2020 16:48

She's only mentioned it this afternoon so I'm not entirely sure how long it's been there. It's hard to see unless you actually grab hold of her head, which isn't something I spend a lot of time doing in the normal run of things. Grin

retired dentist looks like an erupting tooth she appears to still have some baby teeth that is normal at age 11, but I can't see the other teeth well enough to be sure

TeacupDrama · 11/05/2020 16:55

at the moent it looks like she has UR1, Ur2 ( adult incisors) URC (baby canine) UR4 ( adult premolar ) not sure whether the next tooth is UR5 or URE adult premolar or a baby molar, but most likely URE
this is a best guess that it is the unerupted UR5 a bit in front I have no xrays which is really the only way to confirm it
is the URE even a teeny bit wobbly move your finger forward over the URc and see if you can feel another bump above it even higher up
it certainly doesn't look infected but as I said with no xrays and no visual / physical examination of the patient it is a best guess and not a clinical diagnosis in any way shape or form

DMCWelshcakes · 11/05/2020 17:26

Thanks Teacup

When she finally reappears from her video chat with her besties, I'll get her to check if it's wobbling. And check for extra bumps higher up.

I'm sensing that bursting in on her now & poking her in the gum will not be well received...

There is a bit of me that's bored enough at the moment to try it though.

Hmm. My ds has this but has his adult teeth. The dentist said it's nothing to worry about, just a gum lump....

DMCWelshcakes · 11/05/2020 18:25

Not that wobbly and no lump above it.

OP posts:
DMCWelshcakes · 12/05/2020 09:12

I got a better photo this morning. I think there is a bit of a lump above it @TeacupDrama.

Still hurting too.

How old do they have to be before they can have bonjela?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 12/05/2020 09:14

Theres a kids version of bonjela

DottyWott · 12/05/2020 09:15

Yes it’s her adult tooth UR5 . Nothing to worry about at this stage, plenty of scope for it to work it’s way into position. If the baby tooth is wobbly, encourage it!

DottyWott · 12/05/2020 09:16

Actually, could even be UR4

TeacupDrama · 12/05/2020 10:32

I am as certain as I can be without seeing her that it is an erupting tooth the photo plainly shows that the fifth tooth is a babytooth the URE so it is probably UR5 erupting as from the very first photo you posted it looks like UR4 is already erupted, ask if the tooth just behind it the fifth from the midline is even moving a tiny bit it is probably not actually wobbly yet

TeacupDrama · 12/05/2020 10:33

often teeth push hard for a few days when erupting then stop for a while it probably hurts more when eating as that pushes the baby tooth up towards the new tooth
