I cannot stand it when people say spuds instead of potatoes. No idea why, I just hate it!
Will the spuds be ready soon?
Just pick some spuds up while you're at the shop.
The spuds need peeling.
Etc etc 🤮 Awful!

Granny.
Please use Nan.

UnfinishedSymphon · 10/05/2020 22:32

I was reading a book yesterday and the protagonist had an unexpected visitors, she greeted them with "what a gorgeous surprise". I have no issue with the word gorgeous but used in that context makes me uncomfortable and I can't think why. Also can't stop thinking about it!

Momof2boys1girl · 10/05/2020 22:33

I hate Hun, babycakes, peng and 2 words and I have no rational to why I hate them but cereal and nap! They irritate me so much.

JaneyGotAGun · 10/05/2020 22:35

Nap nap.

EastMidsMumOf1 · 10/05/2020 22:49

Likkle, hospikal, bokkle anything that should be 'tle/tal' makes my toes curl.

EstuaryBird · 10/05/2020 22:56

Scoff......makes me feel quite unwell 🤢

Notso · 10/05/2020 23:01

Meds,
Ended up in hospital/A&E/OOH,
Blue lighted,
When people say they're 'doing' or have 'done' a holiday destination or attraction it sounds so aggressive and rude,
Sourced or source instead of bought or buy,
Chucking, slinging, bunging or picky when talking about food,

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 10/05/2020 23:11

I DONT WANT TO TALK ABOUT THEM.

WarmSausageTea · 10/05/2020 23:23

Medal when used as a verb, which happened a lot during coverage of the Rio Olympics. Made me clench hard.

ByeGermsByeWorries · 10/05/2020 23:28

Chocs/toms/pots/biccies (or bicbics as my ex mil said) Angry

ByeGermsByeWorries · 10/05/2020 23:32

Also can't bear the phrase "come of age"

Lavenderpurple · 10/05/2020 23:33

Supper. I irrationally hate the word.

RedDiamond · 10/05/2020 23:44

Hun Hmm

Poppet1974 · 10/05/2020 23:50

Yes to quite a few listed so far but I absolutely cannot abide ‘bits’ or ‘picky bits’🤮🤮🤮
‘Oh we’re just having picky bits for tea’...
‘DH and I will just have a few bits later on..... but ‘picky bits’ is especially nerve jangling, even typing it is making me angry. It sounds like bits of skin or something picked out of a nose...... just stop it!

WomanIsTaken · 10/05/2020 23:52

Prosecco, that's so funny, my mum said, upon the birth of first grandchild, that she'd disinherit anyone who dared to refer to her as Nan as opposed to Granny. She irrationally hates the word Nan.
Great thread.
I have strong feelings about certain words for different reasons. In some cases, it is just that the particular combination of sounds makes my skin crawl: flesh is my aaargh-word. Weep (as in 'the sore was weeping') is another one.
Other words I cringe at because of specific connotations that come with the usage: all the hubby, mumma, hun and similar, comprehensively covered in previous posts. Wouldn't say them in a million years, but not because of how they sound.

LuxLuxLux84 · 10/05/2020 23:53

Yummy.
Artisanal.
Bubbly as in “she’s bubbly”

Soon2BeMumof3 · 10/05/2020 23:54

'Of a morning/night'
'simples'

WomanIsTaken · 10/05/2020 23:58

Poppet, thank you for clarifying 'picky tea'. I read it on page 1, tried to figure it out, failed. Is it a meal which consists of a mixture of left overs and freshly prepared dishes and condiments, such as cold meat, salad and bread, or a 'picking random stuff out of the cupboards as can't be fucked to cook'? Is it a group thing or a private luxury?

SerendipitySunshine · 11/05/2020 00:04

Simples
