Teeny tiny children’s bedrooms

Dd has the box room and whilst she was a baby and toddler it was manageable. Now she’s older and needs a desk for homework but still floor space to play, it’s getting much harder to organise.

Any tips? I was thinking about a mid sleeper type bed but it would probably need to go next to the window, is that a no-no?

She’s not the tidiest of people and I don’t think the small bedroom helps!

We had to build a mid sleeper suspended between the walls as the room was too snug to actually assemble a bed in. It does overhang the window, but it was better that way than being in your face at the doorway. You get the floor space underneath (with IKEA Besta units at the back that gives a sense of space, and there's an IKEA Pax wardrobe (filled with drawers and shelves, not hanging) next to the door. That has a mirrored panel for space and everything else is white.

The walls are white apart from the back wall which is a strong blue (broken up by the bed)

DS is 9 and loves it. We went mid-sleeper to give him headroom as he grows. DH made sure he could sit up comfortably up there. It is a lovely, efficient use of a room only just viable to be called a bedroom.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/05/2020 11:13

Yeah I really like the long desk too.

RedskyAtnight · 10/05/2020 11:14

That's basically the same size as my DD's room.
She has a fold up desk and fold up chair although she mostly sits on her bed and doesn't use the chair (we have had to relocate her desk downstairs during lockdown as that's fine for homework but not so great for working 5-6 hours a day).

I would be loathe to get a nearly 10 year old a mid-sleeper - my DC had outgrown (literally in one case) theirs by about age 11/12.

I also doubt a 9 year old will have that much homework (unless they go to a very academic school).

The fold up desk we have is this one: www.argos.co.uk/product/6174758

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 10/05/2020 11:15

Annoyingly our room is massive. I could in theory put a desk in there.

That second photo from Bernadette is very similar to what we've tried to do - see this image from Pinterest. DD has a zillion cushions too to make her bed almost like a sofa during the day which isn't really possible with a mid or high sleeper.

I think a fold down desk would be the best option. That way it can be used as a. Smith table/laptop table etc

RandomMess · 10/05/2020 11:18

Can you steal room out of the bedroom next door to hers to make it bigger?

I agree mine all wanted out of higher sleeps by the age of 11/12!

MsAwesomeDragon · 10/05/2020 11:22

My 10yo has a small room, and she has a high sleeper with a desk underneath. The desk folds down and the chairs convert into a bottom bunk for sleepovers. It's a good solution for her small bedroom and gives her a space to do homework (or to facetime her friends and play Roblox).

Some of her friends have double beds, and she wants one of those, but it literally wouldn't fit in her room and still allow the for to open. I think she'll keep this bed til dd1 moves out properly, which will be another couple of years I think. Dd1 is 20, and at uni most of the time, but although her room is bigger, the space is necessary whenever she has to bring all her belongings home from uni.

My daughter is 13 and has a bed I ordered which is 6ft instead of 6ft 3 so it fits along the short wall which frees up loads of floor space. She also has a huge Ikea hemnes Bureau style desk which holds all her painting stuff, school work and extras like nail varnish etc. Then one taller chest of drawers which doubles as a bedside table and we built our own wardrobe on the skirt section of wall next to the door from a tall Ikea Kallax (1x4) a self and a hanging rail.

Plus a wall shelf for books and another for bits and bobs.

She actually has 2 empty drawers in her chest if drawers and 2 half empty boxes in her Kallax. And not much in the drawers under her bed so I think this could have worked as well when she was younger (shes13) and had toys.

At our old house our older 2 shared and most of their toys were in under bed drawers. And a shared Kallax unit.

My ds has a small room, we use a normal bed and have a high shelf running around the top of the room for storage as well as underbed storage. He also has a desk which is a fold down desk as i didnt want to use up all the floor space, it works very well.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 10/05/2020 11:26

That room is beautiful! Sadly we rent so no big adjustments can be done to the house.

DS has the smallest room which has a mid-sleeper from Ikea with a little wardrobe and shelves built in underneath it. It works well for him because he uses the space underneath it for his toy boxes which leaves the rest of the room clear for playing etc.

Crazybunnylady123 · 10/05/2020 14:23

With smaller rooms you really need to use the wall space. We have put 4 shelves up in our box room and it’s really helped give more space.
I feel your pain as my dd’s stuff is everywhere. She’s moving into the second bedroom soon as new baby is on the way.

Dowser · 10/05/2020 14:35

My sons rooms were 7 by 11 foot 6.. we divided a 14 foot wide room. Ducted light to them And put up a partition. ..all done properly with a door into each room
Exh built high beds across NArrow bit , with loads of storage under and floor to ceiling cupboards on long bit, except middle bit had counter top for tHem to do homework, computer, tv, with kneehole for chair for them to sit at
Worked really well. Could you do that
One room has been ripped out and is now are walk in closet
Second room, again ripped out but a spare single across narrow bit and proper floor to ceiling wardrobes

Dowser · 10/05/2020 14:36

Yes we had a long desk in each sons room..couldn’t think of what to call it
It’s how we turned a three bed bungalow into a four

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 10/05/2020 16:11

If anyone sees these long, slim desks/tables, can you post the link? The Ikea one is available in the Uk which is a shame because it looks perfect.

RandomMess · 10/05/2020 16:13

There is a hemnes dressing table that is very similar?

RandomMess · 10/05/2020 16:15

Scrub that I mean Malm!

Or make your own, buy 4 of the adjustable desk legs and one of their solid tips and trim it to size. The bamboo ones are solid I believe.

TimeForACheeseSandwich · 10/05/2020 16:21

Friends have these for the two kids - www.studybed.co.uk/
Not even slightly cheap, but they're really good.

KittenVsBox · 10/05/2020 16:26

My 10 yr old has a mid sleeper, with a pull out desk and chest of drawers under it. Drawers are across the bottom, preventing access to the bottom drawer, but he spends a lot if time on a beanbag in the space under the bed.
Wardrobe and door on other long wall. Window on short wall, feet near window.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 10/05/2020 16:40

RandomMess the Malm one is the one that doesn’t seem to be available here, only the US. So annoying. (Typo in my previous post!)

They do look amazing cheese! Unfortunately my budget isn’t even close to that! Grin

In our dds small room we originally had a stompa bed but replaced with a day bed, as she was scared of monsters underneath the higher bed!! Also the space underneath mainly stored rubbish that she did not really need and was hard to access. We replaced the bed with a day bed and funnily enough the room looked loads bigger straight away. Think it was because we could see more of the wall. We got a narrow desk/dressing table from Ikea and those tall thin drawers too. We do not have a wardrobe in there though.

OnlyToWin · 10/05/2020 16:47

Sorry it is the malm one we have - just seen your update.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 10/05/2020 16:47

Dd doesn’t have a wardrobe either, just kallax boxes and drawers and a bookcase.

Do you have a link to the Ikea table onlytowin ?
