Dyeing a child's hair.

Looking for opinions. My best friend messaged me this morning asking me if I thought it would be okay if she dyed her 10 year old daughters hair with permanent hair dye. I did a bit of research and the general consensus was no and it shouldn't be used if the person is under 16. I told her this but she thinks it would be fine. Any hairdressers or experts out there know more so I can show her? Her daughter has beautiful hair but is adamant she wants it done and has refused hair chalks etc.

I must be one of the few people who has never dyed my hair. Ever. I have naturally auburn hair (I specify auburn because otherwise people picture bright orange. If you took the red out of my hair, it would be brown) and love the colour. Trying to get my colour from a bottle is not always possible and I’m not willing to risk the dye ruining the colour I have.

My DD has the same colour as me in beautiful ringlets. She’s 6 and luckily never expressed an interest in dying her hair. I hope she never does. I certainly wouldn’t be letting her dye it at 10! I used to ask my mum if I could dye my hair and I’m so grateful she said no.

I remember using the toners shampoo-in hair dyes as a kid Grin

If she’s blonde then manic panic would work brilliantly we used it on our daughter a coupe mod years ago she has brown hair and it was still bright and it washed out totally over the summer holidays we did it on the first day

Would never dye a child's hair.

I didn't start mine until 16, unless you count silver spray in a can (1980s.)

Aside from the risk of allergies , thinking of hair as being almost disposable ? "You can always cut it off" / "Cut it short , if you don't like it you can grow it" ( I sit here with shoulder skimming hair afyer two years growing out a bloody Pixie)

If your hair is not good it is there all the time . A dodgy dye job in Lockdown. Erm no
A dodgy dye job on a 10yo in Lockdown. No.

Though my DD had 5 lobe , one helix and a tragus before she was 16 . Then her belly button just after she was 16 .
I went with her (and paid) and found her a Tattoo / Piercer with Needles for the cartilidge / navel .

At this time , she has 3 lobe and the belly piercing . The others she took out . There is no mark left .There are local bylaws regarding age , we live in an area that will pierce under 16 with Parental Consent , as it isn't permanent .Central London , nope .

Pick your battles .
Have a Plan B

Luckily none of my kids ever wanted to dye their hair. If they had I would have left them to it and said on your own head be it! I was a child of the 80s, I had loads of different colours (There were 2 types available, Crazy Colour and a thicker gloopier one) but it was a rebellion thing, not a parent child bonding. I guess it's because it's so mainstream and fashion now, like piercings, tats etc. When I did it it was more of an anti fashion, fashion!

Thanks everyone. She messaged me back and said she is still adamant she wants it done and she still wants it red. She is going to do a patch test and see how it goes.
