Dyeing a child's hair.

Looking for opinions. My best friend messaged me this morning asking me if I thought it would be okay if she dyed her 10 year old daughters hair with permanent hair dye. I did a bit of research and the general consensus was no and it shouldn't be used if the person is under 16. I told her this but she thinks it would be fine. Any hairdressers or experts out there know more so I can show her? Her daughter has beautiful hair but is adamant she wants it done and has refused hair chalks etc.

Realistically if she is going to dye her hair (and not get into trouble with the school), now is the time to do it.

WhenItIsOver · 09/05/2020 14:57

My school friend, aged about 14, had beautiful natural blonde hair, it had streaks in that showed really golden blonde as it grew.

She turned up at school one day with bright orange hair. Had bought a red dye and thought it would go red. It took a long time to go, and even longer to live it down.

That’s the other thing. Red dye is an absolute pain in the ass to try and get rid of. Generally it stains orange and we advise people either to let it grow out from the roots or to lift the colour with bleach which would just totally destroy the child’s hair

I'm surprised at how many people have dyed their children's hair.

APocketFullOfButtons · 09/05/2020 15:17

I had temporary dye at that age, I wasn’t allowed permanent until 13 and my mum was one of the strict ones! I had plenty of friends that were allowed then, not a big deal. I have friend whose 3 year old has (I think temporary) pink hair at the moment! I’d say leave it, might not be what you would do, but you’re not their mum.

When she says "Red" is it auburn red (ginger as it used to be) or Pillar Box fake red?

Natural auburn or dyed is beautiful but high maintenance .
I've never found a Semi P one that has fitted the bill of proper auburn red for me . Only henna .

Don't go down the Henna route unless you are prepared for the mess (lots) the re-application (mess) the pain in the bum fading , (difficult to dye over and remove)
It is very unpredictable as a natural product .

My DD wanted to dye her hair ( face it most teens do ) , she has beautiful dark brown but wanted black hair .
We compromised on a very dark brown (with the promise she could re-dye if it didn't work) Semi Permenant
It fades nicely , no re growth .
Takes a while to re-do .

But my DD is 17 , I think she dyed her hair in 6th form.

Patch Test even with a Semi Permenant
Strand test .

And a Plan B in case it goes Pete Tong .

@plaitandcurl Thank you. And everyone else. Have passed all the info on. It is up to her and you're right I'm not her mum but she did ask my opinion so thought I'd get a varied argument.

Dyeing kids hair is just wrong. Hair chalks for fun not so bad. A 10 year old refusing hair chalks and demanding it to be dyed says a lot about who's in charge!

My DDs were allowed to have their hair dyed when they earned enough money to pay for it themselves at a salon. So about 15/16.

I've just dyed my daughters hair with tissue paper and boiling water

MrsIronfoundersson · 09/05/2020 17:01

Ooh how did you do that, shat?

HopeClearwater · 09/05/2020 17:05

Why did you do that?

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 09/05/2020 17:07

My God she is 10!

Shatandfattered · 09/05/2020 17:11

I did it because it's lockdown she's 8 she's sick fed up and it's non-permanent, doesn't damage her hair and it cheered her up and gave us a different fun activity to do, if that's alright with you up there on that big high horse Hmm

I just bought coloured tissue paper off eBay and boiled the kettle, let it sit in a bowl for five minutes then strained the paper away and dipped her hair in a ponytail into the solution for five minutes then dried

WindsorBlues · 09/05/2020 17:13

I'm relaxed about this sort of thing. But for the love of God do not let her dye it red. It's notoriously the worst colour to fix, cover or do anything with.

Therollockingrogue · 09/05/2020 17:14

No really it isn’t a good idea.
An allergic reaction to hair dye isn’t uncommon and can be life threatening. It happens VERY suddenly, and why would anyone risk it during this time? What a time to be sat in A&E with a head that swollen up like a balloon and a scalp that’s burning off . If they do it , choose something more like the green one above (not touching the scalp ). I’d coloured my hair for twenty years and had no reaction to a patch test, yet had the most horrible reaction to a box dye I’d used so many times before. It was terrifying. Never again.

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 09/05/2020 17:16

Red is the hardest colour to get out of your hair. Even harder than black. I wouldn't let my 10 year old dye her hair red.
Why did she ask you, could she not look into it herself?

LycraLovingLass · 09/05/2020 17:22

I dye DD hair every summer and have since she was 10, I only do the end though so it can be cut off is necessary.

I dyed my hair a lot from the age of about 14.

Soubriquet · 09/05/2020 17:27

I crepe paper dyed my dd’s hair.

She’s 7. I’ve promised to dye it with a temporary dye when she sees a colour she likes

I done my daughters hair 3 years ago, she would have been 9.
Just put a few blond streaks in, no where near the root and she had a massive allergic reaction, 2 days before we were going to Spain!!!

Make sure she does the patch test first.

Shinygreenelephant · 09/05/2020 17:36

@mymymymymy its called Adore, was on Amazon. We bought 2 bottles because shs has really thick waist length hair but one was enough

SignOnTheWindow · 09/05/2020 18:00

Bleached the ends of DD's hair (she's 10) then dyed the ends pink. It's just dead keratin and proteins. She can cut it off.

Did patch test first in case of allergic reaction (this was a few weeks before lockdown, anyhow) and didn't apply to the scalp.

Looks great.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 09/05/2020 18:04

I was dying my hair from 11 and I’ve been every colour of the rainbow since then.

OP tell your friend to ALWAYS do a patch test. IF he dd wants to dye her hair it’s fine but I’d use a semi permanent dye personally, loreal casting creme is very good & easy to use

Shat Your tissue paper dye is bloody genius!

Shatandfattered · 09/05/2020 18:08

@P1nkHeartLovesCake
Thank you very much. We've even stored the dyed water in the fridge to use again in the future and we have multiple colours to try. She's asked me to use a spray bottle to blend blue into the green coming from the top but I think she's expecting far too much from my limited skills Grin

Allnamesaregone · 09/05/2020 18:11

Arctic Fox dyes are really good. No ammonia, no peroxide and last only a few washes. You can dilute with conditioner if you don’t want vibrant colour.
