I've never seen star wars, where do I start

Hello,

I've been living a lie and I've never watched star wars. I've got Disney+ but I'm a bit confused were I should start. Should I just watch the newer ones or do I need to go back to the start.

Thank you

Agree with the majority, go for 456. If you love it watch others but its perfectly fine to stop there. The modern ones suffer for being a bit confused with multiple directors trying to stamp their style on them. 123 just had some cringeworthy characters and plot lines.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 08/05/2020 22:16

Student58 that whole line about sand!

That's the problem I found with the newer ones. Different directors for each and seemed to have a different vision of where it was going.

Phantom menace all the way babey xx

Well I've watched four and really liked it (once I got over the 70's graphics) I'll see how I get on for 1,2,3, I'm not great with waffle and cringe so we will see

I'd watch them 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 1, 2, 3.

The reason being that the originals are still the best and you don't need the back story to enjoy them.

Then 7-9 are good and better than 1-3.

Once you've watched those and into the Star Wars vibe you're more inclined to be forgiving about 1-3 and interested in the back story (even if you spot some plot continuity errors with the original movies).

It's not tbf that 1-3 are shit movies - they just suffer in comparison to the others.

After that if your still interested I'd watch Rogue One which is a side movie that happens at the same time as 4.

Of all the new movies it's the best by far and stands as a good movie in its own right.

I'd avoid Solo though (the Han Solo spin off) if you're paying for it - if it's free it's an ok watch but it's the worst of the bunch and it doesn't even have Jar Jar Binks in it....you'll understand that reference when you watch.

Happy viewing OP and may the force be with you....

Figgygal · 08/05/2020 22:46

As much as they’re rubbish I’d start at phantom menace and work through the “sequels” then the originals then the newer ones.

fessmess · 08/05/2020 22:50

Don't bother. They're all dire.

DeRigueurMortis · 08/05/2020 22:51

fess 😱😱😱

Noooooooo!!!!

Star Wars is utterly brilliant!!!

BorisTheBellend · 08/05/2020 22:55

This thread is so confusing. Which is the best way?!?!

I have seen the old ones as a kid but I couldn't tell you a thing about them. I'm bored with nothing new to watch so I think I will jump on the bandwagon and watch them all.

So, they're numbered on Disney+ and I should start at 4?

Becca19962014 · 08/05/2020 22:58

I'm watching them all chronologically right now. But I've seen all of them, except the last loads of times. I've even sat through the commentaries on 1-3 which were very interesting.

Currently just finished episode 4. So 5-9 to go. I would do the whole marathon of 1-6 on Star Wars day but obviously that's no longer possible. Before that 4-6 was easily possible.

I watched them in release order having queued to watch the last one and spending hours discussing with others in school what we thought episode seven would be like. Several of us, me included thought there was some kind of plot as to why we couldn't watch 1-3 Grin I spent many hours hunting for the originals of 4-6 online when the new versions were released and many hours complaining with other fans about the changes made.

Anyway, to answer your question I'd go in release order. There are other spin offs too which you can slot in if you want but I don't know if they are on Disney+. clone wars has been released but only on DVD I think.

HanSolo · 08/05/2020 22:58

4, 5, 6

That is all.

2 is an utter travesty.

Rogue One is good as a stand alone, you don't need to have seen any others.

dementedpixie · 08/05/2020 22:59

Yes you want Star Wars IV - A new hope

Becca19962014 · 08/05/2020 22:59

I've sat through the commentaries for 1-3 and the comments made were really interesting from a fan point of view.

Boris the thing is it's quite subjective.

I've given my view below.

Watching them chronologically (1-9) makes sense if you've already seen them and we've had family SW binge weekends where we have done this. Though if doing true chronology you should watch 1, 2, 3, Solo, Rogue One, 4 to 9.

However if your new to it (or can't remember the originals) it makes more sense to watch in a different order.

In part it because 4-6 were made to stand alone anyway so no scene setting is needed.

After that there's a debate as to if you watch 1-3 or 7-9.

I'd watch 7-9 first as personally I think they are much closer in style/direction to 4-6 so to me it feels a more natural progression.

After that you can view 1-3 as backstory.

Damnloginpopup · 09/05/2020 00:52

Return of the Jedi is really shit. Bloody Teddy bears picnic. No wonder it stopped there originally. New Hope was magical when I first saw it and still doesn't disappoint. Just watch them in numerical order. I hated phantom Menace the first time but enjoy it now. I like them all, some more than others. Some characters in each are dreadful, some in each are excellent.

HanSolo · 09/05/2020 00:58

Aw c'mon, the bit over the sarlac pit? That was amazing.

Damnloginpopup · 09/05/2020 02:08

Really? Bobba Fett had a most pathetic defeat. Landos rescue was nonsense. Lria strangling Jabba was ludicrous. Absolute tosh. Luke was abysmal throughout the film. Utter wank.

BadLad · 09/05/2020 02:33

Start with A New Hope (4), and then watch Empire Strikes back (5) and Return of the Jedi (6). 6 isn't as good as 4 and 5, but it's OK and has a reasonable conclusion.

The best of the rest is Rogue One, which fits between 3 and 4.

Force Awakens (7) and Rise of Skywalker (9) are OK.

1-3 and 8 are utterly dire, with no redeeming features at all. In particular, 1-3 make no sense. They drone on forever about taxation of trade routes, they're woefully acted, the plots are shite and make no sense, and they use the lifht sabers so often that even the coolest weapon ever made becomes dull. The so-called epic light saber fights go on for ages and are utterly devoid of any emotion or tension.

BadLad · 09/05/2020 02:35

@Becca19962014 by commentaries, do you mean the Redletter Media reviews?

RoLaren · 09/05/2020 07:19

4, 5, 6, Rogue One and Solo. The rest I will happily never watch again. And a massive thumbs up for Red Letter Media reviews too. Pizza Roll, anyone?

Becca19962014 · 09/05/2020 14:38

badlad no, I bought the special edition DVDs for 1-3 which had director and others commentaries.

BadLad · 09/05/2020 15:04

I see.

May I recommend the Red-letter Media reviews / commentaries to everyone. Hilarious and very informative. Can be found on YouTube.

AnneOfCloves · 09/05/2020 15:11

We did them all as a family last week in film story order, but I couldn’t face watching the shit-shoe that was 1,2,3 so I joined in for Solo, Rogue One, 4,5,6,7,8,9.

If you were starting from scratch I’d do 4,5,6,7,8,9 because you get a story arc and they’re pretty solid kids adventure films.

I love the originals because I grew up on them, but I think 8 was bloody ace.

You could probably hear my cheers from space when Admiral Holdo handed Po his ass on a plate. He’s fun, but I loved the whole “hush now, show-off boy, the grownups are talking.”

I'd avoid reading comments like Damnloginpopup's if you've already made your decision and want to avoid spoilers 🙄
