What's the tastiest low calorie salad dressing?

MortyFide · 06/05/2020 19:07

I'm calorie counting, and I resent using up valuable calories (99 cals per tablespoon) making my salads taste a bit more interesting.

In my experience, commercial fat-free dressings taste fairly hideous, but haven't touched anything of the such for years (probably why I'm fat).

Any recommendations? Open to making my own...

I have been using the Asda calorie counted french dressing. I think it's pretty good, and only 69 cals in 100ml so negligible in a tbsp.

Grumpbum123 · 06/05/2020 19:12

I like just balsamic vinegar

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 06/05/2020 19:13

Just chuck some nice vinegar on it and a bit of salt and pepper.

I'm even more of a purist. Simple lemon juice and salt here

Daisypod · 06/05/2020 19:18

Pizza express light house dressing is lovely and 40 cals for 10mls

SkaLaLand · 06/05/2020 19:20

Lemon juice. It's delicious

woodencoffeetable · 06/05/2020 19:22

yoghurt mixed with herbs

MortyFide · 06/05/2020 19:29

Ooh interesting ideas thank you. Balsamic is quite powerful in its own I think, although I do like it...notnconvinced on pure lemon juice but as its got 2 votes I'll try it!

What counts as "nice" vinegar? Not malt Sarsons presumably.

Yoghurt and herbs, mmm that might work - I've always liked potato salad with yoghurt.

Balsamic
If you reduce it for 20/25 mins on a low heat it gets sweeter and less overpowering

Ghostlyglow · 06/05/2020 19:50

The Asda one is quite nice, cheap too.

PeppaisaBitch · 06/05/2020 19:56

The Sainsbury's low calorie Cesar is amazing. But it has to be the one in the fridge section near the pre packaged salads. The one on the shelf is rank. It's 15calories per tablespoon. Yummy.

MortyFide · 06/05/2020 19:59

Reduced balsamic, who knew?

Another vote for Asda, excellent.

Low cal caesar from the fridge, got it - doesn't bottled caesar dressing taste like sour yoghurt though, or is that just me? The caesar dressing you get in Tossed, though...lush that is.

Some of the are crap. It took me a while to find the one I like. I'm also leaning towards lemon now people mention it.

JasonPollack · 06/05/2020 20:05

Really enjoying your thread title juxtaposed with 'Hand Sanitiser' as the next thread down Grin

I would just put a nice vinegar.

JasonPollack · 06/05/2020 20:06

Like cider vinegar or white wine.

MitziK · 06/05/2020 20:12

Oil, vinegar, orange juice, thyme, seasalt and pepper. (Or lemon and thyme, garlic oil, lemon and Rosemary, etc).

1 part oil, 1 vinegar (apple cider, rice, whatever as long as it isn't Sarsons), 1 juice. Season/add herbs, shake.

Works out at about 40 calories a tablespoon. If you want more oil, it goes up to about 80. And worth every one of them. Have one less slice of bread to allow for it.

If you can get hold of any fruit vinegars they are gorgeous. They tend to be found in delis and farm shops. I’m currently using a raspberry vinegar but my favourite is mango.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 06/05/2020 20:17

I think there are a few fruit vinegars on Ocado.

CatSmize · 06/05/2020 20:21

Balsamic vinegar and olive oil, nicely seasoned. That's how we do it here in the Mediterranean Smile

derenstar · 06/05/2020 20:25

Another vote for the Asda French dressing, it’s lovely

TyneTeas · 06/05/2020 20:27

Morrisons do a nice low cal garlic and herb. The other flavours in the range are tasty too

ThePlantsitter · 06/05/2020 20:27

If you use vinegar and have a boiled egg in your salad, it forms a sort of emulsion with bits that fall off the egg. Sounds gross, eh? But actually it's like a v tasty dressing.

Nemesia · 06/05/2020 20:31

If you like Asian flavours then use 1 tsp of sesame oil and soy sauce. There is only 17 calories in 1 tsp and because it's quite a distinctive flavour, a little goes a long way.

MortyFide · 06/05/2020 20:31

Brilliant ideas, thanks everyone.

Hand sanitiser could work? Grin

White wine vinegar. I like pickled red cabbage (usually buy in the Polish aisle in Tesco) and some avocado for creaminess.
