One of the big magazine declared grey was 'over' months ago!

ageingdisgracefully · 04/05/2020 18:14

Dirty pink.
Furniture with sticky-out legs.
Gold.
Clutter.
Leaf patterns.

There's grey and then there's grey.
A beautiful grey kitchen by Plain English/Devol is not going to look outdated any time soon.
I'm not into grey personally. Just saying that a lot of fashions are quality/price dependent. The higher end you go, generally the longer lasting it will be. I say generally because obviously there are exceptions.

Grey is old, it's navy blue (getting old), dark green & soft pinks now. Dark rooms with all matching skirting is still popular.

Lots of botanicals & tiled floors have been everywhere for ages so that will be out soon.

Gallery walls are still going strong.

Insta & Pinterest ruin things imo, little trends explode & then everything looks dated.

Lardlizard · 04/05/2020 21:35

I’m glad to hear the grey is going !

We bought a house at the beginning of the year and it's a weird mishmash of bygone trends (which we're just adding to...). There are remnants of the early 00's Tuscan decor in the tile and bathroom. You can tell the sellers hurriedly painted over the deep reds with grey. They painted the kitchen cabinets another shade of grey and put in chestnut laminate floors through the whole place.

We're coming in with our aged wood, dark blues and greens and numerous houseplants to keep the cycle going. We even discussed adding quartz counters in the kitchen the other day. I'm under no illusions that it'll all be out in no time too.

lucialou · 04/05/2020 22:47

Whilst I do like a bit of grey I’m not keen on it absolutely everywhere, especially the mrs hinch esque grey rooms that are photographed with a grey filter to make them look super-grey. I also keep seeing those little baby ballpits with grey balls in them instead of colourful! Depressing.

ClarkGriswoldsChristmastree19 · 04/05/2020 23:17

@OublietteBravo I love that rug, can you tell me where you got it?

pussycatinboots · 04/05/2020 23:46

I would suggest bookcases Grin
They're everywhere at the mo...

LunchBoxPolice · 04/05/2020 23:56

Those awful fake IKEA plants that hang down from a shelf (usually from home bargains).

I hate the frogtape-triangle-trend, it looks so dated.

Fablon covering every surface in the house (usually fake marble effect).

Umberellaellaella · 05/05/2020 00:11

Glitter in paint, matte black features, I actually think white is on the up over grey at the minute and then outside silver corpse fencing, painted patio slabs and garden bars/pergola and fairy lights everywhere, theres a lot of upcycling going on at the minute and I guess it can only be a good thing if it saves it all going to the tip, but the quality of some are shocking or far too out there for most households.

copperoliver · 05/05/2020 00:12

I'm going to get a new kitchen once this is over and fancy midnight blue. X

Lardlizard · 05/05/2020 07:12

Midnight blue and copper

Whilst I stick by my "jewel colours, mixed metals (particularly gold) and art deco influences" statement as being on trend at the moment, I actually don't think greys are going anywhere since so many people ditched their magnolia for grey. What definitely is well on the way out is that look loved by Mrs Hinch of having absolutely everything in shades of grey and silver.

I think greyer muted tones will stay for a while as a base neutral, although warmer greys rather than cold steely greys. I've just used F&B ammonite in places which is almost white in sunny light and I've mixed it with golds and brushed brass rather than silver which increases the warmth.

Its easy to see what's on trend. Just flick through an interiors magazine or spend ten minutes on Houzz

OublietteBravo · 05/05/2020 08:14

@ClarkGriswoldsChristmastree19 - it’s this one. I have the 160cm x 230 cm version. It’s perfect for my office: low pile (so the chair wheels don’t get stuck) and lovely and soft underfoot and not red.

Equimum · 05/05/2020 08:45

Round here, everyone is going for jewel coloured walls, bold velvet sofas, lots of gold and brass accessories etc.

We will be keeping our white and pastel walls, beige and cream furnishings and stripped or painted wood items. These make me feel calm and the other, quite frankly, doesn’t!

AlltheLemurs · 05/05/2020 08:59

I don’t hate grey at all it is just everywhere. I have also seen those ball pits that are black white and grey instead of being colourful, so awful.

I think a lot of the colours trends come from farrow and ball paint colours that are then copied. They have a wide range of neutrals and that will continue to be popular. That is also where the trend for dark colours comes from. It’s fine if you live in a stately home but not in an ordinary terraced house.

sunflowery · 05/05/2020 09:04

Loads of house plants, leaf print wallpaper, gold accents, dark green/navy accent walls.

I love looking at Pinterest but my god does it make me feel like my own home is so boring!

NiteFlights · 05/05/2020 09:16

silver corpse fencing this sounds like an exciting new trend!

@lemonsandlimes123 what would you say is on its way in? I thought maybe warmer colours for a change? Even terracotta ish?

The horrible cold cheap greys deserve to be banished to the dustbin of design history, as does too much dark blue - I love Hague Blue but have only used it on a front door and furniture, it’s a tricky colour on walls I think - even on the F&B website you can see this - and cheaper versions don’t have the same visual appeal.

Right now I think what’s in is lot of green and plants, which I like (but I hate mid-century stuff and all the spindly and geometric things). I’m hoping that by the time I can afford to do my kitchen diner I can do it green and white without looking like a dinosaur. I’ve got my eye on an ivy patterned wallpaper which DH thinks is for grannies anyway.

I want to see the return of patterned carpet. I think it’s happening, but slowly.

sotiredwe · 05/05/2020 09:34

Terracottas & putty colours are meant to be the new trend. Magnolia will probably come back!

sotiredwe · 05/05/2020 09:35

Monochrome nurseries are defo on the way out, they were a thing 4 yrs ago

GigiLamour · 05/05/2020 09:39

We recently moved into a house with lots of grey - it's not necessarily my thing, but it's so nicely done that I can't justify redoing it!

Hoping to use it as a background for more colourful stuff in some rooms - peacock colours, velvet, gold/brass. I think those things can actually work with grey (e. g. dark grey textured curtains and feature wall in the living room). Maybe some people are adding to their grey, rather than replacing it, and that's why the jewel colours and gold are popular?

I love the Art Deco stuff too. Hadn't realised it was on trend, but that would explain why I'm finding it so easily at the moment!

It does mean that my house will no doubt be horribly dated within a few years. But I can live with that as long as I like it.

boredboredboredboredbored · 05/05/2020 11:24

Shaker kitchens (especially dark vase units)
Bifold doors
Metro tiles
Dark walls
F&B paint (because darling the pigmentation is just so amazing)
Those la Redoute patterned rugs
Shutters

Btw I have loads of the above in my house 😂
