Do you watch TV in the daytime?

Just occurred to me today that we don't turn on the TV until the evening. It's usually because there's something specific that we want to watch. I've never been tempted to turn it on in the daytime and neither, it seems, is anyone else in the house.

DC do go on phones or iPads (not gamers, it seems), for probably around an hour day, and DH and i both like to browse online, so it's not a daytime screen aversion.

Is this unusual? Do you watch TV in the daytime?

No. I only put the news on in the daytime.

Futurenostalgia · 03/05/2020 20:12

Yes I do and I prefer it to evenings as I can concentrate better. Occasionally if I wake up early I will watch a Netflix film in bed before I start the day.

UserDeleted · 03/05/2020 20:13

Not only do I watch a lot I also then read fanfic of lots of tv shows. Grin

Also put tv on for my guinea pigs when I go out. 😆

Chesterfuckingdrorrs · 03/05/2020 20:17

If I'm in the tv is inevitably on more so for background noise because I hate silence if I'm in by myself.

IncrediblySadToo · 03/05/2020 20:21

No - well I never used to. I have the BBC news on a lot at the moment. I don't really sit & watch it until the daily briefing comes on though. But it's SO repetitive that pottering around in & out of the room I catch most of the 'news' during the day

In 'normal' times no. I personally think daytime tv is 'dross' but 🤷🏻‍♀️

My friend (family of 4) has the tv on from the minute she wakes up until her DH turns it off when she falls asleep. Always at least 2 Tv's on, but frequently 3 or 4. - live them all but first my head in!

IfNotNowThenWhenever · 03/05/2020 20:25

Whoa. Op, your kids have an hour of screen time on phones/tablets a day?? During lockdown?? Fuck me. I'm a shitter parent than I thought! No, I don't watch much TV during the day, but DC have Netflix on and off thru the day, plus phones (at least 3 hours a day and I have to wrestle it off them) and playstation, about 2 hours a day. We're out bike riding etc about 2 hours a day as well. I wish my DC were up for reading and baking all day long but sadly not.
It would be nice, tbh, to have a couple of hours to myself to watch daytime TV on my own.

Pollyputthepizzaon · 03/05/2020 20:28

No, I don't like the noise and don't like the kids on screens. Ages 8, 6 & 4 so still at the age for playing with toys. But even before kids i wouldnt watch daytime tv. Just not interested.

RRocket · 03/05/2020 20:28

At the moment, all day every day.

I've gotten through Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire, X files, Buffy, and all of the Marvel films since lockdown started.

I'm also partway through all of the FIFA World Cup films on Amazon.

homemadecommunistrussia · 03/05/2020 20:32

It's on a lot. Weirdly before I met dh I didn't even own a tv.

CountFosco · 03/05/2020 20:39

Pre pandemic if I was WFH I'd often watch something on demand at lunchtime. Watched the last episode of Fleabag that way!

LynetteScavo · 03/05/2020 20:41

Well, I never did, apart from watching Neighbours at lunchtime many years ago, and This Morning when I was on maternity leave.

I let the DC in the school holidays if it was raining, but only one of my three DC will watch TV in the day now they're older.

I was actually a bit judgey about it day time TV.

Then I discovered that the parents (yes grown ups with successful careers) of DDs two highest achieving friends, actually binge watch Netflix on a Saturday afternoon. Shock

Well, this had opened up a whole new thing for me! Who knew my children would not become complete failures if I watched TV on a Saturday afternoon? This afternoon I watched out of Africa. Proper wild I am these days although I did turn it off when my DM was waving at me from the front garden

TiptopJ · 03/05/2020 20:45

Usually on my day off I'd watch cartoon for half an hour or so with my toddler in the morning then at 9 I like jeremy vine for a bit but I'd rarely watch the whole programme- probably an hour or so then the tv gets turned off.
Currently though my DH is also at home and he is a tv on all day type of person. I no like longer need a clock just the opening theme tune to programme. Cant wait until hes back at work Grin

Hedgehog44 · 03/05/2020 20:47

We watch it in bed in the morning but generally no. When DS was young CBeebies was always on though. It's generally just me in the lounge and I prefer to read.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 03/05/2020 20:49

Background noise because I don’t like silence. I wouldn’t say I was actually watching it though. Unless it’s something recorded to watch whilst ironing or some other mindless housework.

RedRiverShore · 03/05/2020 20:51

Depends on the weather, if it’s not so good I will watch it most of the day, generally boxsets on Netflix, Apple TV or Sky

AgeLikeWine · 03/05/2020 20:57

I don’t watch ‘daytime telly’, but when I’m at home during the day, as at present, I usually listen to R4 but have Sky News or BBC news on in the background with the sound turned down.

It’s a habit I picked up from work in aviation where we always have those two channels plus CNN or Al Jazeera on in the office at all times. We need to know about anything which could affect our operations immediately.

Twigletgirl27 · 03/05/2020 21:29

Me and OH watch breakfast news until around 8-8.30 then radio 2 for rest of day. Kind of feel it's the slippery slope to watch tv in daytime. We don't normally switch on again until around 6.30 pm

fartyface · 03/05/2020 21:35

I struggle to find any interesting tv that is suitable for primary school children to come across. dramas are all murders or affairs, reality shows/morning telly type things are all full of trashy themes I dont want them to learn about. it leaves not much more than cookery shows or house buying, and that is about as far as I ever get.

Shame, because sometimes I would love to watch an old film.

lucysmam · 03/05/2020 21:43

I rarely watch tv at all. The girls might watch something in the day - Disney or a musical maybe - but not very often.

The radio's on or music streaming through Alexa most of the day & the tv for background noise on an evening but I don't really watch it then either unless something draws me in.

The last full series' I watched were Breaking Bad and Once Upon a Time, and I've just started Emergence (I think that's what it's called).

CountFosco · 04/05/2020 06:41

I struggle to find any interesting tv that is suitable for primary school children to come across.

BBC natural history and history is usually good, although Mary Beard talking about the Romans lead to DD2 asking what prostitutes were. The DDs are big fans of Lucy Worsley and I've finally seen the point of the 'Back in Time...' series, they are set at perfect level for primary children.

Toomboom · 04/05/2020 06:57

No, I have never found daytime TV interesting. I watch BBC news for about an hour in the morning, then TV gets turned to radio for the rest of the day.
TV goes back on at about 6pm at the moment [ when working I don't get home until 8 pm, so it goes on then ], for about 4 hours, then I go to bed.

Nonestopcaberet · 04/05/2020 07:01

Very, very rare to have tv on during the day, I’d have to be extremely bored.
We tend to record anything we want to watch. TV goes on at 8pm and we decide what we are going to watch that night.
DH used to watch news in the morning but has stopped that now too.

Koddii · 04/05/2020 07:10

I will put sky news on if I am sitting down having a tea break. Also at lunch time I try to watch a bit of the Scottish update from Nicola Sturgeon. I have no objection to tv being on. I like tv so find it strange my ds does not. He would never watch it during the day, only in the evening.

Ragwort · 04/05/2020 08:27

Do other people feel, like I do, that somehow it is just a bit ‘lazy/indulgent’ to watch tv in the daytime (& I don’t mean watching the sort of daytime tv shows which are pretty naff but even a film or documentary that you have recorded).

Eg; I am furloughed, nothing specific to do at home apart from housework, cooking & my volunteering- which I don’t do everyday. (No DC to home educate). This morning I have lain in bed for the last hour and a half with a coffee, iPad & the newspaper- in theory I haven’t done anything productive bit somehow I would feel uncomfortable watching tv ... there is no rational reason for this though Confused. I am over 60, no one is going to tell me off Grin.

Futurenostalgia · 04/05/2020 08:35

I can’t watch a film or drama in the evening as by the time dc go to bed. (9pm or creeping up to 10pm at the moment) I am exhausted. I like to get up early, make a cup of tea and watch something. Scheduled daytime tv is rubbish though.
