My toddler has just been sick

How????

We have not been out for seven weeks. Proper sick bug sick. I'm panicking. She had norovirus in January. How is she getting sick at home.

Could it be something she ate?

In all honesty, this has been mystifying me. We self-isolated for two weeks as our toddler had a bad cough and fever (was tested, definitely not Covid) but since then, every couple of weeks, one of us seems to have got sniffles or something similar. We have an ongoing veg box delivery and have been to the supermarket twice in a month and I have absolutely no idea where we can be picking things up. Its making me question everything I know about science to be honest!

Silversun83 · 30/04/2020 14:38

My 3-year-old has been feeling a bit peaky today and complaining her stomach hurts.. She is very prone to stomach bugs so praying it's not going to progress but also thinking how?!

Hope she's feeling better soon. Could it be something she ate?

Witchofzog · 30/04/2020 14:40

Toddlers can be dirty buggers. She may have ingested some poo or something unsavoury. Or it could be rotavirus which I believe most adults are immune to so someone without symptoms could have passed it to her, even via handles of shopping bags etc. Hope she feels better soon

Toddlers have appalling hygiene. She probably sucked her thumb after getting her hand in the way during nappy change, or licked the bathroom floor or something.

(Side note: I recently learned that rotavirus can live on surfaces for 9 sodding weeks)

WhyNotMe40 · 30/04/2020 14:44

My 3 year old was sick last week. I had not taken him out of the house since before lockdown as he can't be trusted not to put things in his mouth. I wipe shopping down, and when I've been in work everything goes in the wash and I shower.
It's a mystery
I eventually put it down to licking something he shouldn't have from the garden

Bienentrinkwasser · 30/04/2020 14:44

Yes toddlers are grim!

KingaRoo · 30/04/2020 14:45

I know of a few people who have had vomiting even after not being out of the house in weeks. Could it be mild food poisoning eg bacteria on fruit/veg/salad?

ofwarren · 30/04/2020 14:46

It's usually the oral fecal transmission that makes kids sick. They put their fingers in their mouths after scratching their bums or their hands all over the floor where shoes have been.
Norovirus is also notoriously hard to kill.

Brogley · 30/04/2020 14:48

Kids tend to go scratchy-bum followed by chewy-finger and bingo - sickness.

moobar · 30/04/2020 14:51

Thank you for replying.

I have health anxiety around her and it's bad just now. She's being fountain sick. I'm freaking out.

Ok, so just germs, I need to calm the hell down.

Don't think food. Nothing unusual or different anyway, lots of hand washing. But yes 18 months and disgusting.

littleyikes · 30/04/2020 15:37

I would guess food related, but I've had an equally confusing time with my toddler catching Hand foot and mouth (and subsequently me 🤦🏻‍♀️) after being in for 3 weeks.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 30/04/2020 16:44

My six year old had a vomiting session two weeks ago. Again, not been out anywhere, just DH to the supermarket.
He is a disgustingly grotty boy though! Constantly putting his fingers where he shouldn't and then chewing his nails. It can't have been a proper bug as no one else caught it.

moobar · 30/04/2020 21:43

No more sick since 2.45.

Had two bottles of formula because she kept asking for it. (Doctor did say to do this when she dehydrated with noro and it was ok). Both stayed down so far.

I'm up the wall, she's asleep.

Can mums who are much better and more experienced than me tell me stories of kids being sick randomly once then being fine. Please. I've only known sick as a bad, multiple day thing.

Onlyahalfbottle · 30/04/2020 21:47

Yep DS3 twice. Both times was spectacularly sick once and that was it. I was on edge worried it was something terrible, we never worked out what it was possibly overexcited after a day with DM but it happens

Bowbeller · 30/04/2020 21:55

My ds had quite a few episodes of being very sick and then nothing else when he was little.
I would always gear up for a night with the bucket and it never came to anything. We thought it might have been related to fatty food or onions at one point but never found out definitively.

Hope yours is ok

Helbelle17 · 30/04/2020 21:55

When DD was 2, she had two episodes of being really sick. Both at night and everything came up. It lasted less than 12 hours each time. It was horrible, but very short lived. She was going to the childminder then, so assumed it was just s bug.

homeschoolmyarse · 30/04/2020 21:58

I would check beakers, cups etc for that disgusting stuff that gets in the lids/rubber seal/spout

moobar · 30/04/2020 21:59

Thank you all so much. I'm struggling tonight.

She's asleep, no temp. Settled. And I feel awful.

I wish I could get better at this stuff.

moobar · 30/04/2020 22:01

Good tip thanks.

I am cautious with squirty bath toys and do wash cups twice a day but will check rims etc.

We are on a farm so she could have touched something. I don't know I am careful.

Only odd thing was she choked a little at breakfast and didn't quite clear it. Randomly burped about an hour later and I thought that was it. Then was sick after lunch. Not sure if it maybe had something to do with that.

My 4 year old did this a couple of weeks ago. He was sleeping in our bed, woke up in the night and projectile vomited everywhere. No warning! I took him back into his bed and stayed with him, fully expecting more vomit to ensue. Nothing else happened. He slept through the night and woke up right as rain!

Our bed on the other hand suffered greatly Hmm

AtseneGatnalp · 30/04/2020 22:06

OP, one of mine did this (and I have a sick phobia, so my anxiety was in overdrive evert tune). She is now 16 and is still randomly sick sometimes now. And I still go into anxiety overdrive. It's horrible, and I sympathise. I hope your DD sleeps through the night and wakes up all happy and bouncy tomorrow (and that you manage to get some sleep too!)

AtseneGatnalp · 30/04/2020 22:07

Evert tune?! Every time...

skankingpiglet · 30/04/2020 22:07

I'm don't often throw up except when I'm released to go afternoon drinking with friends. It always spells disaster , but when I do I usually feel very very queasy for some time, do an impressively big sick, then feel as right as rain again. Sometimes it can be like the nausea/sicking never happened just 5 mins later. Maybe your DC works in a similar way OP?
The only occasions I've been sick multiple times from memory were car sickness as a child and the time I got Norovirus.

As for how they got a sick bug whilst shut away, my 3 bets would be food (not necessarily something you've all eaten this week, could be 1/2 a dried up sausage they found hidden somewhere), the bum poking/fingers in mouth combo, or finding something delicious in the garden to sample. Which depends on the kind of child you have. My DC1 would do 1 & 2, DC2 would do 2 & 3. I once had to stop DC2 eating a dead snail when they were around 2 🤢 The tantrum that caused...

WhyNotMe40 · 30/04/2020 22:41

My 3 yo who I posted about above was just sick once. I was paranoid he was going to do it again for a full 48 hours after, but he was right as rain.

Wannabegreenfingers · 30/04/2020 23:23

My daughter is a vomiter. Will always be sick with a temperature. Sick if she eats to much. Shes also a grubby bugger. She is 7 almost 8 and has always been this way. The baby years were projectile!!
