When do you think foreign travel will resume?

Just as the title suggests... when do you think foreign travel for holidays will resume?

I’m an nhs a&e nurse and just about exhausted with covid- I’m saving up for a nice holiday when it’s all over. But when? I have annual leave for July (ha! I will do extra nightshifts that week as I’m sure travel won’t be an option then) and a week off in the middle of July then a week off in early November. Do you think there is any chance of foreign travel in November?
I just want to lay back on a sun lounger and swim in the sea somewhere hot!

Maybe September October but I cant seeing it been much earlier.

Crunchymum · 29/04/2020 23:25

I'd hold fire for the time being.

Can you even book holidays / flights at the minute?

Many thanks for all you do and I hope you have an amazing holiday..... eventually!!

WineInTheSun · 29/04/2020 23:29

I haven’t tried to book anything as I plan to book last minute (using some of my savings and all money from extra shifts) so the budget isn’t an issue! I just want to get away. I think it is possible to book though as the tourism tries to stay afloat.

Hopefully September/October time then! I wonder if things will be so different we will have to wear masks ok holiday etc

I live in Portugal and although hotels may start to open in june or July they are planning for domestic tourists initially, and then, perhaps, schengen tourists. For them to be fully open is looking likely to be April 2021

HundredMilesAnHour · 29/04/2020 23:42

Realistically I don't think foreign travel will be a sensible option until 2022.

The airlines are in turmoil. That's going to have a massive impact even when social distancing ends. And it could easily go on until next year.

Mucklowe · 29/04/2020 23:50

June 2069.

QueenofDestruction · 29/04/2020 23:53

I'm in Spain and the same as above, local first then countries depending on their dog is stats. Some are saying no tourism before December.

WineInTheSun · 30/04/2020 10:54

Wow these answers are depressing! The domestic tourism first approach makes sense I guess.

I should probably accept I’ll be working through my September and November annual leave too 😭

It will depend on the country
New Zealand and Australia are talking about opening the borders between themselves as they have both flattened the curve Also looking st allowing travel to and from the pacific island countries with no cases
I don’t expect them to open borders to countries where the curve has not flattened to the same extent.
Other countries may do things differently
There may also be a requirement to isolate upon return

starrynight19 · 30/04/2020 10:59

That’s interesting to hear from you in Spain and Portugal.
It does make sense to test the waters with domestic tourism first.
I feel we may be lucky to get a holiday in England much later this year.

lifestooshort123 · 30/04/2020 11:12

We're planning short breaks in this country (2 booked for Spain won't happen) and even though I'll really miss the sun and the sea, I wouldn't want to take/catch the virus there (I want to be ill in the UK!) nor would I enjoy the trip unless it was a relaxed holiday like we usually have. So, I'm resigned to not going until next summer at the earliest regardless of whether travel bans are lifted.

tiredanddangerous · 30/04/2020 11:14

No one knows the answer to this, we can only guess. I think it’ll be well into 2021 before anyone can go abroad.

Costacoffeeplease · 30/04/2020 11:17

Even domestic tourism is a risk for us as Lisbon and Porto have much higher rates of infection and deaths than in the algarve.

This weekend is a bank holiday and we are not allowed to leave our home town for three days from midnight tonight, to avoid having lots of northerners coming down to the algarve

Whatevernext1 · 30/04/2020 11:21

I always book my holidays too far in advance! If I'd have known what was coming I wouldn't have booked them. I'm due to go away to the Caribbean at the very end of September for 3 weeks then America for 10 days at the end of November. I've told myself both holidays won't be happening now,it's just a case of hearing from the travel companies. I'd rather be safe and the companies take the right steps to ensure this by cancelling. It's just so sad for all of those working in the tourist industry,I see know way back from this,at least not back to how it was. So many people losing their jobs is just awful. I won't be doing my usual booking in advance for next year anytime soon either! I would absolutely love a holiday though!

amusedbush · 30/04/2020 16:11

We always book way in advance. We booked our May holiday (leaving on my 30th birthday - a double kick in the nuts!) months ago.

We’re both gutted that it has been cancelled and DH’s next annual leave is the middle two weeks in October. Obviously we’re not booking anything at the moment but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for an overseas break then.

ProfChaos · 30/04/2020 16:28

UK government have made such a shitshow of dealing with the situation that I bet that British tourists will be some of the last people to be allowed into other countries unfortunately.

Easilyanxious · 30/04/2020 16:31

I have holiday booked for Spain in July ( booked last year ) but currently you it is still on
I wish these countries would actually say fit certain they don't intend to open ( understandably ) but then at least we could get our money back
If we cancel we will loose the deposit which is looking h likely for us to do

Easilyanxious · 30/04/2020 16:31

Also two weeks ago I could still book a holiday for July at same place as had a look out of curiosity , haven't tried recently though

Rottnest · 30/04/2020 16:42

I feel for you OP.
Honestly the only place I would consider at the moment is New Zealand, they are doing better than anyone in the number of cases of Corona, and when I last checked no new cases.
Yeah, I expect to be flamed for this!

BasilDiffuser · 30/04/2020 16:46

Lockdown is at least 17 months so you will be looking at summer 22.

Umnoway · 30/04/2020 16:57

My Mum has a holiday booked for July and I told her it probably won’t go ahead but she doesn’t believe me...

divafever99 · 30/04/2020 16:58

I'm sure my holiday in July will be cancelled. Might try and have a break in the UK later in the year as think it will be late autumn before anyone can holiday abroad.

Sgtmajormummy · 30/04/2020 17:01

I’m hoping for December. I‘ve rebooked Easyjet and my timeshare free of charge for then...

HeyBlaby · 30/04/2020 17:02

I think it will depend on each country individually as to which other countries they open their borders to. We have lost a visit to my parents in Spain and a holiday to Mexico which would have been next month. My friend is getting married in Cyprus which I am bridesmaid for at the end of August and we are going to Zanzibar at the end of October. I am hopeful for them both but also ready to accept that they won't happen.

rookiemere · 30/04/2020 17:04

November could be a possibility, just don't know what a second winter wave might mean. I'd stay positive, but don't book anything until much nearer the time. You could go for a luxurious UK break with hot tub to keep you warm - I'm hoping UK breaks might be an option in July.
