Have you ever cut your hair short (pixie style) and regretted it?

I'm so fed up with my hair. It needs constant styling and I can never just wash and go. I've been trying to grow it long for years but the condition is just so bad that I never manage to get it past my armpits. I'm ready to give up.

I want a mega short haircut that I can just quickly shove some product through and go, but am so fearful that I will hate it! Has anyone else gone for the big chop, and how did you react?

(Obviously will get it cut by a proper hairdresser after lockdown is lifted!)

I've just done it - I love it!

Did it myself, too

Livingoffcoffee · 29/04/2020 21:15

I've done the pixi cut a few times. The first time I hated it...once I found a good hair dresser who knew what they were doing I loved it.

Tips -
Research your hair dresser. Most know how to cut long hair. Short hair is more of a specialist area.

You will still need to spend time styling it. I probably spent more time doing my hair when it was short than I do now

Yes, years ago. Hated it. Have kept it long ever since.

I got it done when I was at uni, and regretted it. I just don’t have the face for very short hair, and it was not flattering. Was very glad when it grew a bit longer again.

MerryGrinchmas1 · 29/04/2020 21:20

I have a pixie cut and I love it!
Never had it this short before but it is so much easier. I do need it cut more often than when I had long hour though as it grows out of shape so quickly

OntheWaves40 · 29/04/2020 21:20

Yes last year, it didn’t suit me and made me look fat (which I am a bit).

It’s only just getting to a length I like!

Not quite a pixie cut but very, very short- done by my hairdresser after a I requested a long bob, so not even what I wanted 🙄

I think it absolutely didn’t work for me because: I had a young baby and just wanted something I could tie up a lot of the time- my hair needed styling more when short. Linked to this- my hair is very wavy (curly in places) and it was just out of control and needed daily ‘sorting’ when shorter. I couldn’t be bothered.

My good friend has a pixie cut and looks amazing though- she also finds it very low maintenance.

MrsMonicaBing · 29/04/2020 21:27

I decided to get a pixie cut, and I regretted it instantly! My hair is naturally wavy, and bits would flick out all over the place. It looked absolutely daft growing it back out too. Now my hair is long again, and when I can't be bothered with it I just scrape it back into a messy bun. Would never get it cut that short again!

MrSheenandMe · 29/04/2020 21:28

Years ago. Regretted it. Looks of horror on the faces of friends as I walked in the room. My face looked like a melon. (Somehow thought it would give me cheekbones Grin )

It's been long ever since - and I love it.

prettygreenteacup · 29/04/2020 21:30

Pixie cuts need to flatter the face shape so do your research on that! I did it as a student years ago and hated it. It did not suit me at all!! It's also high maintenance cut-wise to keep the shape as they grow out fast, take a lot of styling and takes forever to grow it long again. Not for me!!

Heygirlheyboy · 29/04/2020 21:31

Yes. I thought I would look like Kelly from BH90210, kind friends told me I looked like Chloe from Home and Away; in fact I looked like my brother. Absolutely disaster.

FizzyPink · 29/04/2020 21:33

Not quite a pixie but a short bob just before lockdown. I was sick of my long hair looking thin and straggly and thought this would make it much healthier looking.
I loved it for about a day but I won’t be keeping it this length as it needs proper styling every day and like a previous poster no matter how much I straighten and curl it under it insists on flicking out at the ends so I look like Miss Hooley from Balamory Confused

PinkDaydreams · 29/04/2020 21:35

I’ve had long hair forever. Finally went short a couple of months ago and I love it! It was waist length, everyone was so negative when I said I wanted to go short, I hadn’t had it cut for two years as my hair got me down so much. I’d asked my hairdresser for years to cut it short but he refused.
Anyway, I researched hairdressers and found someone that specializes in short hair and booked a consultation. He was so reassuring, the next week I had my appointment and am so glad I went short! Everyone that was negative have all said how much it suits me and how surprised they are. Used to take half an hour to dry my hair when it was long then about at least an hour to straighten it. In the end I just tied it back every day which then starting causing hair loss at the front.
It now takes about five mins to dry with the hairdryer then another five mins to straighten. I don’t have to straighten it everyday, I can get away with it being a bit wavy the day after and it has more volume to it. It’s in much better condition now and looks shiner too.

I’d say if you’re serious about going short, book a consultation first with someone that ‘knows’ hair and can advise you. Show them plenty of pictures of ideas but also ask the hairdresser what style your hair and face shape will suit. Good luck!!

PinkDaydreams · 29/04/2020 21:39

Sorry for the essay! Blush
I’ve attached pics from Pinterest of what my hair looks like now. Obviously they aren’t pics of actual me!

I’ve done it and loved it. It needs a really, really good cut and it needs cutting every six weeks without fail. Other than that zero maintenance. I didn’t even comb mine, washed it and ran my fingers through it. Done.

Dragonsanddinosaurs · 29/04/2020 21:43

I think it probably depends on hair type. I have quite thick wavy hair and the one time I tried having it short I hated it. It was much harder work than longer hair which at least you can just tie back if you are in a hurry.

FallonSwift · 29/04/2020 21:48

My hair is like the brunette in the picture that Pinkdaydreams has posted. I had it cut from shoulder length. I've had really short hair before though and it grows quickly so I wasn't worried about regretting it.

I like it but it is high maintenance. My shaved sides look fluffy and awful at the moment - DH clippers broke so I can't DIY it. I really like it when it's freshly done though, and it is super low maintenance compared to long hair. Wash, blast dry and a bit of product messed through it - done. If I really CBA then I leave it damp and scrunch salt spray through it.

You really do need a hairdresser than knows what they are doing though. My first cut wasn't quite right and she'd cut it leaving bits that would flip out and stick up randomly. You need a salon that specialises in short and contemporary styles for women so that they use the right cutting techniques for your hair type - it makes a huge difference. You also need to have it cut regularly to keep it in shape.

ChesterDraw · 29/04/2020 21:49

Yes did it and loved it! So easy to style and little effort to look good. Had it 3 years and am growing it out now just for variety and of course can't get a haircut.

However (sorry to state the bleeding obvious) if you are in a country that's locked down I'd wait to see how things pan out, as mine needed trimming at least every 4-5 weeks to stay in shape. I don't imagine hairdressers will be opening for the foreseeable if social distancing has to be in place, so maintenance might be an issue. If you chopped it yourself then regretted it, it'd be hard to get help sorting it! Unless you have a pro in the house of course.

Talia99 · 29/04/2020 21:57

I did. It actually looked OK on me but it needed constant styling to look decent and I have fast growing hair so it needed cutting every 4 weeks.

I decided to grow it out and it took 18 months for most of it to look vaguely OK and 3 years to grow out the fringe. I spent most of that 18 months with permanently damp hair as the only possible method to keep it under control as all the layers grew out (mostly sideways).

I currently try and keep my hair at collar bone length - I can tie it back when I am in a hurry or style it nicely when I’m not. Also, another couple of inches in lockdown won’t look too bad.

If you want a pixie cut, go for it but don’t do it because you think it’s low maintenance because it really, really isn’t.

HoHoHolyCow · 29/04/2020 21:59

I had it done in my 20s (40s now) and hated it! I'm tall and slim but very short hair made me look like a hamster. I have it in a chin length bob usually and love it.

MandosHatHair · 29/04/2020 22:06

I had mine cut into a pixie after DS2 was born. I thought it would be easier to manage but it actually needed more styling than throwing long hair up in a pony tail. I also didn't like being able to style it differently for special occasions in the same way you can long hair.

Luckily my hair grows very quickly and I love having long hair again. I wouldn't do it unless you are absolutely sure.

MandosHatHair · 29/04/2020 22:08

Oh and the growing it out again process isn't pretty Grin

FallonSwift · 29/04/2020 22:11

And I'd echo the lockdown maintenance comments. My colleagues have run out of insults for how bad my hair looks now (it was due for doing the week that lockdown was announced and it's normally recut every 4 weeks). I managed to find some old hair slides and grips from when I had it long. I have more clips in it than a 5 year old on the first day of school Grin
