Why do you drink bottled water and not tap?

Since being inside, I've noticed a man carrying large water containers every 2 days from the shops. He might have done this before lockdown, but I'm interested why people use bottled water and not the tap? Taste? Health concerns? Something else?

Water is the only thing I drink (apart from alcohol) - no tea or coffee and I hate my tap water and buy carbonated bottles of water.

Those who buy sparkling, is there a reason you don't have a Soda Stream?

Yes, I don't want to.

drspouse · 28/04/2020 11:19

Yes, I don't want to.
Because you want to have mountains of plastic bottles hanging around for years? Because you want lots of bottles being transported around in lorries unnecessarily?
Or do you have another reason that doesn't sound like my 5 year old?

The further north in Scotland you go the tap water tastes better.

I think it depends where your water comes from. For example in Greater manchester its mostly Cumbrian water so fine to drink. In London, well your mostly drinking other peoples piss and excreted pharmaceuticals. Bottled water is not inherently healthy. Correct me if im wrong but if its described as bottled water well it can be exactly that ie bottled tap water. If its spring water then check the analysis. It can sometimes be higher in minerals and other undesireables than your local tap water supply..

When I lived in Scotland, tap water. It was lovely, so clean. Now that I live in Ireland, bottled water. The water here is disgusting, white flakes come out of the the tap and our kettle is caked in it.

You're making yourself look silly.

a} I'm an adult and make my own decisions so your virtue signalling is surplus to requirements.

b) You assume I buy water in plastic bottles whereas I buy glass bottles. I don't have children, I don't have a car, I don't fly, all of which are far more damaging to the Planet. How many of those do you tick?

c) Mind your own business.

drspouse · 28/04/2020 13:32

Well, this is a thread asking why people drink bottled water - "I don't want to" does not explain anything. Why bother answering if you don't have a reason? Except to appear petulant.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/04/2020 14:10

Glass bottles can be recycled more easily than plastic but they're very heavy to transport so not good environmentally either. It's a shame we don't reuse glass bottles these days.

The above is what I wrote in my original post. Nowhere did I mention plastic bottles. Unless you are hard of thinking, I think it's pretty clear why I only drink bottled water.

I have more interesting things to do so won't be returning to this thread. Don't waste your time thinking up your next insult.

Ellmau · 28/04/2020 14:29

Taste. The area I grew up had lovely tap water, but where I live now it just tastes nasty.

ginghamstarfish · 28/04/2020 14:37

To PP saying filters are too expensive, isn't it more expensive (and more effort and faff) to buy the bottles than buy a filter? I pay around £20 for a year's supply of filters (Aqua Optima).

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 28/04/2020 14:39

I buy bottled water as I like sparkling and I don’t have a soda stream because they are rubbish!

Rebelwithallthecause · 28/04/2020 14:44

Not to mention soda streams make soda water which isn’t at all like lightly carbonated natural sparkling water

RickJames · 28/04/2020 15:02

Some people object to SodaStream because the company was given land in Palestine by the Israeli government (something along those lines).

I just don't want another blessed device taking up my kitchen surface or have to learn how to use it or clean it etc. I buy my water by the crate in glass from a village shop. The bottles are all refilled locally (local water/ pop/ juice firm). I am quite happy with the social/ environmental aspect.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 28/04/2020 15:14

We buy bottled water as our tap water tastes funny to us (NW England). Growing up I used to drink litres and litres of tap water at my parents house as it tastes lovely.

Lozz22 · 28/04/2020 15:21

Our water taste like you've dipped a straw in the local swimming pool plus you can see the little white bits of lime scale floating about in it. I use it for cups of tea and coffee and that's it but have to run the tap loads first before I do. Hair never feels totally clean either when showering. When I go to Durham I drink shed loads of the tap water up there and look forward to being able to wash my hair and it actually feeling soft and clean

Bert2020 · 28/04/2020 15:22

SE London and our tap water is dreadful, PIL in Hampshire and there’s is lovely.

MontysOarlock · 28/04/2020 15:23

Our tap water doesn't taste the best (hard water area) but luckily the fridge filters it and it tastes great from there.

We drink lots of water as a family, but I would begrudge buying bottled water.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 28/04/2020 15:24

Tap water here - it's lovely and cold and tastes great.

Other places, where it comes out of the tap warm, I've either used bottled, or a filter jug in the fridge.

Where I'm originally from I drink it, but I think it's an acquired taste because other people refuse - and you have to let the tap run a bit to let the chlorine smell dissipate, and it's very hard (the limescale in the kettle has to be seen to be believed by people from soft water areas!)

M0chaJoes · 28/04/2020 15:26

We have a Biba fitted which is amazing. But we only have that as we have a main fitted water softener and drinking softener water isn't ideal

Katinski · 28/04/2020 15:26

"council pop" Love it!Grin
When I lived in Thailand, the water supply was unsafe, so we had to use bottled even for cooking or wetting our toothbrushes and my family living rurally in the US do the same.
We so take our "council pop" for granted. It's brill to have the choice!

Rebelwithallthecause · 28/04/2020 15:50

People who don’t like the tap water but don’t want sparkling h - why not use a Brita filter?
It makes a massive difference without the water bottles

howtoenforce · 28/04/2020 16:00

I use large bottles of bottled water because I'm often out all day in the car and will be likely to be in hotels en route as well so it's difficult to use a flask (not big enough and can't keep it clean). I refill the bottles at home and reuse them a few times before I bin them though
