Why do you drink bottled water and not tap?

Since being inside, I've noticed a man carrying large water containers every 2 days from the shops. He might have done this before lockdown, but I'm interested why people use bottled water and not the tap? Taste? Health concerns? Something else?

I've always drank Tao! I love it, live in yorkshire, never actually knew it could taste different depending on where you live.

IamJackFmsmysterywoman · 27/04/2020 21:46

The tap water here is disgusting. It’s really hard water and gives me almost instant terrible indigestion. It also tastes like soil- bleurgh ! I am from the great East Midlands originally and our tap water was lovely. Everywhere that I have lived since my early years the tap water has been lovely but here it’s dreadful and so hard that everything gets scaled up so quickly. It makes your skin very dry and itchy too. The water in Devon is heavenly by comparison. After two showers in Devon I don’t need to moisturise as my skin and hair feels silky soft ( big sigh ).

Brita filter for us I bulk buy when they’re on off the cartridges.

Looneytune253 · 27/04/2020 22:44

We only use bottled water. I'm not particularly fussed but my dh gets an upset stomach with tap water. He's a bit obsessive tho and even uses it when he's cooking veggies etc.

Sarcelle · 27/04/2020 22:47

During lockdown I tried drinking tap but it is awful, even through a filter jug.

Neolara · 27/04/2020 22:51

Because when I was pregnant, tap water made me want to vomit. And then I just sort of carried on.

NC29 · 27/04/2020 23:02

i have crohn's and have severe reaction to tap water. I have to drink bottled. I would love it if I wouldn't have to bother. Tried filtered, but still no good.

Amityville · 28/04/2020 00:28

If you're in the UK and refuse to drink tap water (allergies aside), you're a bellend. There's nothing wrong with British tap water. It might be a little ew if you're used to soft/hard water and are faced with the opposite. Use a Brita.

Leflic · 28/04/2020 00:35

So weird! Hard water tastes nicer near me because it comes up through the chalk and gets rid of all the yuck. Soft water literally tastes of soil.

But I’m with whoever said glass bottled fizzy water is delicious. It really is.

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/04/2020 00:54

I would drink tap water (supplied by a water company) over bottled water any day. I would have more concerns about drinking water from a private supply like a spring or well.
I worked for 10 years in the water industry.

Amityville · 28/04/2020 01:03

If the bottled water is Dasani, then yikes.

squeekums · 28/04/2020 01:09

Its a hang over from living in adelaide south aus where the tap water is foul. It has a metallic aftertaste almost, some areas its a tinge of brown

There even a long standing joke with those of us who like to poke fun at adelaide "Im so tough, I drank adelaide tap water and survived"

fudgefeet · 28/04/2020 01:16

My husband collects spring water from the hills a couple of times a week in 2 large Jerry cans and has done since my children were born. Sometimes if I’m in a rush I fill their water bottles up with tap water and they know instantly and hate it. I’ve raised water snobs.

Accioroxypops · 28/04/2020 05:47

Because 4 lovely women died of breast cancer on my road. I only
drink bottled as does my family.

HeimdallSaysNo · 28/04/2020 06:38

London Tap is disgusting. Very hard water. Making a nice cup of tea without the scum rising to the top is something I have tolerated during my time down here. But I am now very conscious of using plastic unnecessarily so I use a reusable bottle and fill it with tap.

My parents live in an area of the south Midlands that has lovely soft water. When we stay, we all say that hot drinks are nicer, we use less shower gel and shampoo (!) and our hair is softer with much less itchy scalps.

Rebelwithallthecause · 28/04/2020 08:28

My tap doesn’t do sparkling

Timeslikethese2020 · 28/04/2020 08:31

I always drink tap water but in my current home it tastes horrible and is never cold. Dc won’t even touch it. When I drink bottled water I enjoy it but am mindful of the waste.

PestymcPestFace · 28/04/2020 08:44

Drink tap water, we have very hard water used to get through a kettle or two a year.
Have never been able to bring myself to drink bottled water, except for the occasional emergency. So a bottle or two a year.
Bought a water filter, has been a game changer. Now our water tastes nice and does not feck the kettle over.

Why do you drink bottled water and not tap?
drspouse · 28/04/2020 08:54

Those who buy sparkling, is there a reason you don't have a Soda Stream?

evilharpy · 28/04/2020 09:21

We live an an extremely hard water area, the kettle ideally needs descaling once a week or we get crunchy tea. But our tap water tastes lovely and I drink it by the gallon. I don't know why it's so nice - I've tried to drink hard water elsewhere and it was disgusting. Unfortunately our water kills kettles despite regular descaling (it gets into the seal between the little water gauge window and the body of the kettle and makes it leak), and turns my hair to straw.

My home town in Ireland has soft water and it doesn't taste nearly as nice, but after a couple of washes the difference in my hair is amazing.

Zaphodsotherhead · 28/04/2020 09:45

Maybe your bloke with the water lives in a caravan with no running water.

I've got a few lads that come into the shop where I work, always buying huge containers of bottled water, so I asked them what was wrong with tap water, and they told me that they are farming contractors. At the moment they are living in caravans on site, so they need to buy water in!

HazelBite · 28/04/2020 10:30

If I drink water from a tap I come out in a nasty rash and mouth ulcers. It took a long time to work out the cause of my rash.
The weird thing it is very area dependant. When we visit somewhere different I usually try a cup of tea, and if the rash starts then that is considered a bottled water only area.
Central London and Norfolk water have given me the quickest reaction. Having the tap water filtered makes no difference.
However I can enjoy going for a coffee in North Wales, The Scottish Highlands and New York.
Never been able to work out what it is the water that I am reacting to but the areas where I can drink the water all appear to be areas where the water flows through rock initially.

I'd be a lot more concerned about hormones leaching from plastic bottles than what's in tap water. Also what else is in there. Stands around for months if not years before you drink it. Haven't some brands had unsafe levels of sodium in the past? Making, transporting and disposing of all those plastic bottles causes huge environmental problems.

I was told years ago that carbonated water ( plain, unsweetened) is bad for the teeth. Don't know if this is true.
