If you live alone (food related)

I was talking to a friend and we got into a stupid debate about bread.
We both live alone and she says it’s not possible to use an entire loaf before it goes off when it’s just you.
I said it is possible with a loaf of bread but not with some other stuff (potatoes)
At which point she told me I shouldn’t be able to use a loaf up.

Can anyone settle it for me?

Depends on what type and size of loaf you mean. A small loaf you can use to make toast might not even last a week. A big loaf of sourdough will be so hard after 4 days that you leave it in a corner until it goes mouldy.

PawPawNoodle · 27/04/2020 13:26

Depends on how much you like bread I guess. 2 of us don't get through a normal loaf a week but neither of us are big bread/sandwich/toast lovers.

Pastaforall · 27/04/2020 13:27

I definitely could but I eat a lot of sandwich’s and jam on toast!

RedskyAtnight · 27/04/2020 13:29

We freeze bread

lastqueenofscotland · 27/04/2020 13:30

I could easily get through a loaf of bread in a week
I loooooove toast

ravenmum · 27/04/2020 13:31

Just tell her you are in training for a bread-eating competition.

Khione · 27/04/2020 13:47

Sometimes I have toast for breakfast and a sandwich for another meal if I do that a couple of days a week I easily use a loaf. Sometimes it's porridge and no sandwiches and I use no bread for a week.

It's definitely possible but not mandatory.

Sparticuscaticus · 27/04/2020 13:50

Surely it depends how much bread you use and whether you have sandwiches for lunch and toast for breakfast in which case you'd go through 4 slices at least at of bread a Day, easy to use up a whole loaf on 3-4 days if you do.

Put half in freezer if you go through less bread a day.
I eat tend to e at wraps soup noodles f salad for lunch and cereal, so I wouldn't go through a whole loaf myself but my family can go through one loaf in less than 2 days !

AravisTarkheena · 27/04/2020 13:53

I started treating myself to the fancy crusty bread in supermarkets cos of this - I couldn’t get through a conventional loaf in a week so no I but the smaller but nicer loaves.

PumpkinP · 27/04/2020 13:58

There’s no way I would use a loaf to myself in a week, but then I don’t really eat bread

7654321j · 27/04/2020 14:02

I eat about a loaf and a half a week on my own. I like toast a lot.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/04/2020 14:07

You won't 'settle' this because it depends on how much bread you eat and what sort - some stays fresh much longer than others.

If you buy a small loaf of sliced bread that has a date of 4/5 days ahead, it's not unreasonable for one person to eat the whole loaf before it goes off, which may be a good day or two after the date anyway, even if it's only really good for toast towards the end.

It's certainly quite possible, and not even gluttonous to eat that amount of bread - it's only a couple of slices a day.

Obviously eating a whole large bakery loaf in a day or two is a lot of bread to eat, but many people probably do.

With potatoes, if stored well, they could last for months, but it's sensible to just buy as many as you think that you will eat, plenty of places sell them loose and you can buy as few as you like.

Rockbird · 27/04/2020 14:07

I would easily eat a loaf a week, likely a lot more. I love toast and would live on nothing else if I could. Surely it depends on your preferences?

cocklepicker · 27/04/2020 14:12

Brown bread? Nah. Warm crusty tiger bread? Yep

AdaColeman · 27/04/2020 14:15

There is no right or wrong answer, as we all like different things.
I don't eat much bread, so I usually buy small loaves such as Jacksons half bloomer,

TheThingWithFeathers · 27/04/2020 14:19

I can definitely use up a loaf of bread before it goes off. Bought an 800g wholemeal loaf from the supermarket yesterday and it'll do me about a week. I eat toast and/or a sandwich most days.

onceandneveragain · 27/04/2020 14:28

How long is a piece of string?😂

how big is a loaf of bread? How long does it take to go off? How good are you at forward planning? How much do you like bread?!?! Do you have a freezer?

Eating a large loaf in two days...Your friend is right, probably too much bread for one person. Eating a small loaf over five days, including sandwiches, and then toast, bread pudding, breadcrumbs for chicken..when iy started to go stale....perfectly fine and you would be in the right.

HaddawayAndShite · 27/04/2020 14:30

Stored correctly potatoes will last ages. Bread freezes.

Pipandmum · 27/04/2020 14:32

We struggle to eat a whole loaf of, say, Hovis between three of us before it goes off so have been freezing it in packs of two slices. Mind you got small soft loaf of M&S own brand and it only lasted three days because it was so yummy!

EngagedAgain · 27/04/2020 14:42

It's a bit of a silly argument, unless it's a light-hearted one. Just depends on how much one eats. I would eat a loaf over a week. Start off fresh for sandwiches then toast. I used to do what a pp said but can't be bothered divvying it up now. I just keep a spare in freezer and get out what I want.

WitchesGlove · 27/04/2020 14:48

Bread can last ages in the fridge.

ravenmum · 27/04/2020 14:50

I was clearly wrong to think that as a single person, I should get a small fridge with a tiny freezer compartment Grin

Bakedpotatoandgin · 27/04/2020 14:52

I usually use up a whole sliced loaf in just under a week (tesco cheapest own brand), but I have 4 slices when I have sandwiches. I don't have a lot of toast, maybe with the crusts at the end.

EngagedAgain · 27/04/2020 15:05

As for the potatoes, no way would I get through an average supermarket bag a week. Btw, I forgot thread title said if you live alone! I don't I've got a partner, but I'm going on what I would eat. To the pp who mentioned freezer, I've only got a small freezer, brought a new one last year, with the same amount of drawers as before, but they are smaller! So annoyed about that. If I lived alone would be plenty of room, but by the time I've factored in OH stuff there's only room for one spare loaf.

IHaveAMagicBean · 27/04/2020 15:06

I’m diabetic and couldn’t use a loaf in a week as I try to restric my bread. My husband loves bread, would happily eat two slices for breakfast and four slices for lunch every day.

I guess it depends how much bread you eat and how big the loaf is.
