If you live alone (food related)

I was talking to a friend and we got into a stupid debate about bread.
We both live alone and she says it’s not possible to use an entire loaf before it goes off when it’s just you.
I said it is possible with a loaf of bread but not with some other stuff (potatoes)
At which point she told me I shouldn’t be able to use a loaf up.

Can anyone settle it for me?

I freeze half the loaf when I buy bread then don't but any the week after.
I like baby potatoes and a bag lasts me about 2 weeks

Depends on how much bread you eat! If you eat 2 slices of toast (plus fruit) for breakfast and a sandwich (plus treat) for lunch you can get through a standard loaf in 5 days

We make all ours. We slice bag and freeze it and take out as much as we need each day. You could do exactly the same with shop bread.

I would be interested in seeing the correlation for bread eating households and overweight households. Not in a bitchy way but because I like bread but don't buy it often because I'm convinced it's an easy route to weight gain, and I would rather like to be proved wrong so I could buy more.

notangelinajolie · 27/04/2020 15:57

Wouldn't it depend on how fresh the loaf was? And some loaves are a lot bigger than others.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/04/2020 16:04

otter correlation does not equal causation. Bread is very palatable, especially when combined with butter, jam, cheese, gravy etc etc and some types are not very filling, so it can be easy to eat a lot of it, alongside normal meals.

People who eat a reasonable amount of bread within the calorie allowance for their size/activity levels will not gain weight.

People who eat more calories than they burn off will gain weight, whether they eat bread or not.

A standard supermarket medium sliced loaf is 18 slices. (The random things you learn as a Scout Leader...). This is just over 2 slices a day. If you have a sandwich for lunch every day, it's quite feasible to uses loaf a week.

We are a family of four. We barely get through a sliced loaf in a week... But we get crumpets, wraps, croissants, a fresh baguette etc on top of that. (Not al of those every week). We have other stuff at lunch, like soup or sausage rolls, or pasta. So neither of you are unreasonable really.

At which point she told me I shouldn’t be able to use a loaf up

If she said this because she doesn't eat much bread because she doesn't like it, or just prefers other food, she's not being unreasonable.

But if she said it to imply that the OP is a greedy carb guzzler while the friend is stuffed after looking at a lettuce leaf, then she's obviously being unreasonable.

I always used to avoid buying loaves because I didn't get through them but since being at home all the time I've found I get through a loaf before it goes stale just by eating two slices of toast for breakfast every day. I do keep it in the fridge.

Barbara, I wonder about the bread thing. I think it's complicit because of what one eats with it. On the sandwich thread most people prefer white which is deemed highly unhealthy. Apart from my wondering about bread any carbs I find tends to make me put on weight. The other main culprits are dairy and milk chocolate ( my weaknesses) but I lost alot of weight by completely cutting out cheese and milk chocolate. However it's creeping back on! 😂 Been eating more bread since lockdown.

Oh and meant for otterturk too!
