How do I activate a new bank card from home?

I don’t have telephone banking, and I don’t know if there’s a way to do this. Does anyone know how you activate a new debit card?

I got a new one last week. You just use it as normal at a cash point or chip and pin. PIN number stays the same.

teqcar · 27/04/2020 11:53

What does the letter say? It will tell you how to do it.

tessiegirl · 27/04/2020 11:54

There's also usually a number you can call to activate it as another option

Usually a replacement cards doesn't need activating. A new card for a new account or new credit card will but usually you call the number on the letter. Not connected to telephone banking.

notangelinajolie · 27/04/2020 11:57

My new bank cards will only work after I've used them at a cash till. Not great if you can't go out.

Hellokittymania · 27/04/2020 12:44

It’s Barclays if that helps honey… Could I maybe try and do online banking and put it into my card reader? I’m just really impaired, and I haven’t gotten the new card yet… Any idea how long it should take? It was sent on Thursday… But unfortunately, I was hacked on mydeliveroo account and that’s why I’m getting a new card… They said it should have arrived on Saturday, but the post is going slower I think… I just hope it arrives soon…

You are overthinking. Wait until it arrives. Follow instructions on letter. It's unlikely to need activated as it's a replacement though.

AnnofPeeves · 27/04/2020 12:50

I had a message from Barclays saying I needed a new card for security reasons last week. It arrived within a few days and it didn't need activating. The pin is the same and it worked straightaway. The letter explained everything so am sure it will be the same for you.

Hellokittymania · 27/04/2020 12:57

OK, thanks. I told one of the neighbors to please look out for the letter, because I won’t have any idea if it’s for me or not… And yeah, I really did panic. I was expecting a food delivery this morning and it got canceled since I couldn’t pay for it… So I’m a little bit upset… I just hope they didn’t get anything off of the card. Deliveroo told me that they had seen some charges that they don’t think were mine, but I checked all of the receipts from the things I did order, and compare them to what the bank told me was taken and I think it should be OK… Friday, when I told the bank so I was really, really upset… So I don’t even know if I miss heard the number they told me… I was partly upset because I knew today’s food delivery wouldn’t happen… And for me, getting food has been a really big problem.

Peeves what’s the message sent to your phone? I only had a message from Barclays asking me if I had purchased something, and I said yes. But that was it… I have been trying to make some orders, and every time I made an order it gave me a verification thing, but when you clicked on next to go to the security questions, it was showing another person’s name… And I have that a few times in a row… It was really strange.

Does your mail not come to your house? Why would you not know if it was yours or not? It will addresses to you

ghostmous3 · 27/04/2020 13:51

Lol teqcar if my postman is anything to go by me and my neighbours often get each others post 🤣

dementedpixie · 27/04/2020 13:53

I imagine you will get a new PIN through the post too to go with your new card.

AnnieOH1 · 27/04/2020 13:55

If you are struggling for food please consider reaching out to one of your local food projects. There's hundreds popping up all around the country because of Covid-19. Please be assured there's no shame in it. I've personally dropped food parcels at large, gated detached homes because they've fallen on hard times just like everybody else.

TooTrueToBeGood · 27/04/2020 13:57

You really need to read the letter that comes with the new card. I've got cards with several different banks and they all have different activation procedures.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/04/2020 13:59

The PIN for a replacement card is usually the same. The letter the card comes with will tell you how to activate it. Do you not have internet banking? That's usually the easiest way, but if it's not already set up, that's not an option as they need to send letters to your address to set it up. You might be able to do it at a cash machine.

But don't you have another card? As you have found out, if something happens to your only card, it leaves you stuck, so its good to have another card available, with a different bank in case of system errors. Then if the system fails or card is lost, you just use your other card straight away.

Plus if you have internet banking, you can just shift money between the accounts, in case anyone thinks I'm making the obviously unreasonable suggestion of having money available in more than one account.

dementedpixie · 27/04/2020 14:04

Its not just a replacement due to a card expiring though and if it's a security issue will probably have a different card number. That normally means a new PIN is issued. You dont normally need to activate debit cards, you sometimes need to activate credit cards

Hellokittymania · 27/04/2020 14:38

Teqcar unless dictation really made a mistake earlier, I’m blind. Visually impaired so I can’t see my mail. I live in a block of flats, so when the mailman just throws all the mail down, I have no idea what’s mine and what isn’t

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 27/04/2020 14:41

Your previous post said Really impaired rather than visually impaired so we werent aware of your limitations.

Hellokittymania · 27/04/2020 14:41

Barbara, I’m definitely going to get a second card after this…

OP posts:
Hellokittymania · 27/04/2020 14:44

You’ve got a love dictation… Anyway, yes I am registered Blind so that’s why

OP posts:
Pipandmum · 27/04/2020 14:45

No it didn't come across that you are blind. If that is the case surely the bank has a way of dealing with that when they send stuff to you - like in braille?

teqcar · 27/04/2020 14:48

Sorry OP I actually assumed 'impaired' was a typo and you actually meant 'impatient'. There was no indication that you are actually blind and you were asking a lot about what to do which in context fitted with 'impatience'

Silly mistake of mine but easy one to make all the same

Hellokittymania · 27/04/2020 14:50

The key word there is they should… But they don’t… Same thing, I had requested my council tax to be in accessible format, it arrived, as usual… No accessible format… I’ve had a lot of issues with Barclays anyway, so after this I’m going to change banks.

OP posts:
Hellokittymania · 27/04/2020 14:52

Don’t worry, at least dictation didn’t write something really, really rude… I was writing an email to my mother one day and since I speak other languages, and I didn’t realize the Italian keyboard was on, it wrote in Italian the equivalent of Hi Bich in English.
