After my DD was born I noticed in the mornings my front teeth felt a bit funny and my jaw was clicky. I went to the dentist and got a night guard.

Fast forward to now and my top front teeth and have a considerable amount. I googled and realised that I was tongue thrusting in my sleep. I don't know how to stop it and im really really worried. I was meant to have an appt in march but that obviously didn't take place and I have noone to ask for help. How do I stop tongue thrusting in my sleep?! I don't do it during the day. I don't know what to do.

I grind and clench my teeth in my sleep I even wear a dentist made night guard which cost me a fortune which I'm biting through!

Drives me mad because I've always got toothache, I think caused my the grinding / clenching. Sad

Sorry can't help with your issue but do feel your frustration. Thanks

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 27/04/2020 16:15

Are you actually tongue thrusting in your sleep or is this just what you think based on googling?

Teeth do drift with age, your front teeth will become more crowded as you get older.

A click for your jaw is perfectly normal, lots of people have clicks and its nothing to worry about.

Is your gaurd for lower or upper?

Elieza · 27/04/2020 16:31

I remember someone else on here mentioning that a particular type of antidepressant makes you clench you’re jaw and grind your teeth at night. Could that be relevant. If so phone the GO for a different one?

And GP

Sigh.

danni0509 · 27/04/2020 16:35

Thanks elieza I'm on sertraline but I only started them 3 days ago. This has been going on long before, probably about to get worse then 😩

Elieza · 27/04/2020 16:47

It may have been a different anti d.

I don’t think it was that one.

You may have to have a look through other posts that mention grinding teeth and ad’s!

It may settle in about three weeks when the meds kick in. I was on them. Don’t think I ground my teeth then Grin

itghjn · 28/04/2020 00:05

I'm 100% I'm tongue thrusting. My throat and neck and shoulders ache when I wake too. I just don't know what the bloody hell to do!

Elieza · 28/04/2020 17:31

I’d be asking the doctor I think. He may know what will help.

Sleeping tablet to clog you right out?

Could it be to do with acid reflux and you’re trying to cough it up in your sleep or something, so eat earlier in the evening or raise your pillow?

Sleep in your side? What happens if you put a line of pillows behind your back so you sleep on your side and can’t roll onto your back?

PenfoldsFive · 28/04/2020 17:42

Is your guard top or bottom? I’ve had both types and I definitely pushed my tongue against my top teeth when I used the bottom teeth guard.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 28/04/2020 21:01

Im assuming your gaurd is bottom otherwise if your top teeth have moved your gaurd wouldnt fit

If it is switch to a top, it will act as a retainer, and your teeth wont move.

I dont think you need to see a dr.

Maybe reflux if your throat aches, but tbh throat, neck and shoulders is conistent with clenching/grinding. Which is very very common.

Why are youe so worried?

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 28/04/2020 21:07

I honestly think youd have to be thrusting an awful lot for it to actually move your teeth. More than just a night time habit.

What is your gaurd like? Was it made by a dentist?

itghjn · 29/04/2020 07:21

My guard is at the bottom but the thrusting was happening way before I started wearing the guard. It was from the dentist's.

I'm really worried because I don't know how much more my teeth could move. I would say my front teeth have moved around 3 to 4mm. Some teeth have moved more than others. DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon

I am thrusting every night so that is around 8 hours of thrusting for over a year. That is a lot of hours!

OP posts:
PenfoldsFive · 29/04/2020 09:02

3 to 4 mm is the size of a tooth! Are they spreading apart and protruding at the front? It sounds like a huge amount of movement.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 29/04/2020 09:18

Switch to a top gaurd, if youve got a gaurd in then your teeth wont be able to move as much, it will act as a retainer.

Are your teeth starting to tip? Its a lot of hours but its also a lot of hours not, and your top lip provides an opposing force which counteracts the tongue. You have to wear things like invisalign 22hrs a day to get results.

itghjn · 29/04/2020 09:20

Teeth are much bigger than 3mm in size! I have obviously just estimated it but it's pretty significant for me to notice. I'd put a pic up if I could!

They are moving outwards. One of the front top teeth is the worst.

I need to stop the thrusting at night. That's the problem.

OP posts:
itghjn · 29/04/2020 09:23

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon

I know I'll have to get some Invisalign but I'm worried about how to stop the actual cause. If I have a top retainer in and I still thrust do you think just the retainer would help stop the teeth moving again?

OP posts:
DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 29/04/2020 09:24

Could you post a picture of your teeth?

Do your teeth still meet at the front? Or has your actual bite changed?

Honestly I think tongue thrusting is unlikely to cause that much movement, and if they really have moved that much in a short space of time you need to see your dentist and get x rays taken.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 29/04/2020 09:26

No, I mean that to get results from orthodontic treatment you need to wear them for 22 hrs. So 8 hrs of thrusting is unlikely to cause that much movement. Not that you need ivisalign.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 29/04/2020 09:26

I really dont see this as an emergency or even urgent

itghjn · 29/04/2020 09:32

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon

Yes my bite has changed. I struggle biting into thin things like lettuce and other thin things.

If you don't think thrusting is the cause, what else could it be?! Does pregnancy breastfeeding hormones move teeth or make them more prone to moving with thrusting?!

I'll try to put a pic up.

OP posts:
itghjn · 29/04/2020 09:47

This is with me putting my teeth together. It's a view from below so if you were to see me head on it wouldn't be obvious to see the gap.

OP posts:
PenfoldsFive · 29/04/2020 11:29

Ah, I see what you mean now, about the 3mm, I thought you meant your teeth had moved sideways by 3 mm.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 29/04/2020 13:52

I see, thats quite a big open bite actually.

Does your mouth gaurd cover all your teeth? What does it look like? I have seen similar caused by someones mouthgaurd.

I think its unlikely to be caused by tongue thrusting, but thats not to say 100%, theres not much evidence to suggest tongue thrusting causes open bite development. Do you mean you are sleeping with your tongue between your teeth or pushing them forwards all the time?

Pregnancy hormones wouldnt cause tooth movement.

I think when dentists are reopen go there first, get x rays, check for things like cysts.

itghjn · 29/04/2020 14:34

The night guard is just a usual one I guess. It covers all my teeth. Its for my bottom teeth.
I think I am pushing my tongue against the teeth.

Would a cyst cause pain?! I don't have any discomfort or pain.

I have googled so much and can't find anything like it. Apparently kids can have open bites due to tongue thrusting but can't find anything for tongue thrusting at night! It honestly all started after I had DD. 🤦
