What age is not young anymore?

I am 28 and don't feel I qualify as 'young' anymore. Not just because of the grey hairs sprouting from my scalp, but the fact I've now been an adult for 10 years. I would look too old in a nightclub, a lot of the shops I used to buy from a few years ago are now too young for me, and I barely understand what 'the kids' are talking about these days.

I spoke to a friend about this and they said I'm being ridiculous, that I am still young but I don't feel it at all. When did you stop feeling young, or consider yourself not to be young anymore?

you're young enough to be on love island.., honestly you will look back in a few years and realise 28 really is young still. I think 33 was when I started to feel it.

ghostmous3 · 25/04/2020 22:41

When I hit 40

Smellbellina · 25/04/2020 22:41

36

Impatientwino · 25/04/2020 22:41

I think the answer to that question depends on the age of the person you ask!

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 25/04/2020 22:45

When I was 10, 20 was old.
When I hit 20, 35 was ancient.
When I hit 40, 60 was decrepit.
If I'm lucky enough to hit 60, I'll accept I'm old and that old is preferable to the grave.

NurseJaques · 25/04/2020 22:46

I'm 43 and stopped feeling young mid thirties Grin

PumpkinP · 25/04/2020 22:47

I'm 31 and think it's weird when people refer to it as young

I'm 62 and have no intention of giving up life any time soon.

You are as old as you allow yourself to be. I know young 90 year olds and ancient 20 year olds.

Cooroo · 25/04/2020 22:48

I'm 60 and I'll let you know when I don't feel young...

user1471519931 · 25/04/2020 22:48

I'm 40 and still feel young - I have several younger colleagues who frankly act and think like grannies 🤷‍♀️

AntennaReborn · 25/04/2020 22:49

In the last few years I have started rolling my eyes at what teenagers are wearing, that's a sure sign that I'm finally old!

I'm 41.

Pinkarsedfly · 25/04/2020 22:49

It’s a mindset. I feel younger at 45 than I did at 30.

Beechview · 25/04/2020 22:51

Have friends who are a lot older than you. They’ll keep telling you you’re young no matter how old you get (I’m mid 40’s and have friends late 50’s)

  1. Fact. 😊
GrumpyHoonMain · 25/04/2020 22:55

I was reading a piece of longevity research that suggested feeling younger than your years is usually a sign of a long and healthy lifespan. At 28 you should feel no different to 25 if you are healthy but if you’ve let yourself go in terms of fitness and / or nutrition and are stressed then it’s possible you just need to get yourself back on track.

BasilDiffuser · 25/04/2020 22:57

I’m 29 and still feel young. When I had DD at 26 I felt like a baby myself.

lokoho · 25/04/2020 22:58

36

Miljea · 25/04/2020 22:59

A thing: I'm 57. I haven't 'given up on life' or whatever. That's not a mark of 'not being young'; it's a fact. 57 isn't 'young'.

I think, as a gross generalisation, that being around 38-40 is when it will serve you well to start recognising your best years, physically are behind you.

limpbizkit · 25/04/2020 23:00

I'm 32 and still feel young but then I see fresh 16yr olds and realise I don't have a clue what fashion and music they're into and realise I'm not actually young really. But I definitely don't feel older. I suppose 25 stops being officially young. 'young people' seems to get classified at '16-24' commonly

AuntieStella · 25/04/2020 23:01

I'm in my 50s and am still not sure I'm a proper grown up!

Though I suppose for most things you're no lngerbyoung once you've turned 40

Weenurse · 25/04/2020 23:01

My 98 year old patient told me this week that he didn’t feel old until he hit 93.
Maybe go by his definition.😁

Arsed · 25/04/2020 23:04

I’m 40 and physically don’t feel any different to when I was 20. I do feel more emotionally mature but spend quite a bit of time pondering how the fuck I’ve got two teenagers, a professional job and a mortgage Confused

GetUpAgain · 25/04/2020 23:06

I think it depends on how your life goes and what you go through.

When your last grandparent dies and you shift up a generation. When you sort out POA for your parents. When your children reach adulthood. That's when you get older imo.

I also think I am old enough now (40s) to see that I am also young. In my 20s I'd say I felt old but really it was because I'd had quite a hard life. So I wasn't old I just wasn't naive.

BackforGood · 25/04/2020 23:07

This ^ is spot on.
I hate all these ridiculous generalisations.

My 18 yr old said a couple of days ago (on seeing a picture or a little one she hasn't seen for about 10 years who, in her mind she therefore pictures as a baby) that she must be getting old.
OTOH, I was chatting to my 88 yr old friend who was doing some gardening in her bungalow when I passed on my walk a couple of days ago, and she was definitely not thinking she was old - and from her outlook and conversation, certainly isn't.
