Zero time

inwood · 25/04/2020 21:19

Most of the day. I am very thankful that we have a garden.

BiddyPop · 25/04/2020 21:23

Dd (14) spent an hour or so outside inthe morning supervising DH prepping garden furniture for painting.

Wandered in and out periodically the rest of the day. Playing with balls (kicking them, throwing against a net), and just chatting with us when we were out there in between other jobs.

Went for a 40 min walk with DH.
And spent an hour doing hockey training on the green in front of the house with DH.

It depends on how they feel. I don't force my dc to go out because I hated it when my parents did that to me. Yesterday they didn't really go out at all and instead chose to watch TV and play inside after some home learning. Today they did some work on the school's learning platform, watched their dad on the ps4 and then came out to help me tidy up the garden after I cut the grass and chopped a big bush down. That took a few hours.

Actionhasmagic · 25/04/2020 21:46

There must be loads of kids struggling with this lockdown in flats. Your garden sounds ideal

lljkk · 25/04/2020 21:47

Youngest is 12yo & probably was outside ... 5? hours in total today.
Gardening, accompanied me on volunteering, cycle ride, throwing things at his brother.

DamnYankee · 25/04/2020 21:56

Older kids, here (11 and 15).

30 minute walk in the AM.
30 minutes of kite flying (we're in US and near an open space).
Now they are having a snack and watching an episode of "Fail Army" and howling with laughter.
At least their abs and obliques are getting a workout Hmm

Bbq1 · 25/04/2020 22:12

Ds ,14 did a 10 minute walk with me to the shop then we sat outside chatting in the garden from about 3 until 5. It was really nice. He didn't want to really come inside even then, but he's always been a really outdoorsy person.

MrsAvocet · 25/04/2020 22:45

14 year was outside for about 3 hours. 16 year old not at all. When I was tracking the youngerone's daily exercise on my phone earlier I noticed that the elder one's profile says he has been at home since March 21st. He goes outside to hang the washing out and fill the bird feeders if I ask but prefers to sit indoors dressed in black with his hood up all day given half a chance. He is the ideal self isolator. In fact we think he might be a vampire. Grin
However, despite us all sticking to the guidance my husband has just gone to bed with a temperature so that looks like us stuck indoors completely for the next 2 weeks or more.Sad Could be something else of course....but unlikely in the circumstances.

2 x DS ages 3 and 4. We were out for 2.5 hours this morning (have horses so we're at our stables) in the car for about an hour as needed to get petrol and animal food. Picnic lunch in the garden half an hour or so. In the maybe an hour and half, then did a treasure hunt, and played in the garden, then back to the yard for an hour so quite a lot in total.

MinkowskisButterfly · 25/04/2020 23:03

Maybe a couple of hours max today in dribs and drabs, including eating lunch outside. Dd2 won't go outside alone and I really wasn't feeling great today. Dd1 came out for about 15 mins, which is a massive improvement as she normally doesn't leave the house, even pre lockdown/covid. Both are autistic.

Normally we (me and dd2) have been in the garden for about 4 hrs min over the space of the day, including eating out there. She would be out there all day if she could.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 25/04/2020 23:13

Dc were in the garden for about 3 hours with DH having a water gun play fight and painting some new plant boxes.

Mumoflittles · 25/04/2020 23:39

Mine were out from 10 this morning until 8pm. They came in at 1 for dinner then went straight back out and we had a bbq tea on the garden! Lovely.

randomwans · 25/04/2020 23:52

@Actionhasmagic yes it is great to have, we are truly blessed!

We went for a walk at 11 and had a run around on the field. Then went straight into the garden and ate lunch we stayed out till about 4.30 we have been out at least that amount if not more every day. We sometimes do school work in the garden aswell. Yesterday we painted and made cards with lots of glitter. Then filled up the water tray and played aquariums. We have a rounders and boules set and lots of balls, water tray , playhouse and make dens, read in the garden ect. I'm so grateful we have a garden and the weather has been nice

This is the one positive thing about being furloughed. I’m with ds 11 to play football or walk or cycle. He’s been outside and active for more than an hour every day in April.
He’s lost that pasty look, has developed freckles, has stopped complaining and now cycles happily around the villages.
I don’t think he’s realised but he’s grown an inch too. His jeans are up above his ankles Grin

TravellingSpoon · 26/04/2020 08:16

Went out for an hours walk in the woods near our house, then DD spent about an hour with me shooting netball goals with DS on the trampoline.

Some days it's much less.

IScreamForIceCreams · 26/04/2020 08:23

Here in NL kids up to age 12 have never had to stay indoors during our "lockdown" (it's not exactly that restricted here). Kids from our cul de sac have been out every single afternoon the last 6 weeks from about 2pm till 8pm. And the best thing..primary schools go back 11th May, half the class on alternative days. Afternoons will be homework...and play. Officially we can then no longer home-tutor as they are back at school, so instead they will have "homework".

AllianceOfCorcles · 26/04/2020 08:30

We bad a few day like that over last couple of weeks. Yesterday probably 1.5 hours in garden then a walk nearby as well. Must be so tough for people without gardens with little ones - 💐

ItchySeveredFoot · 26/04/2020 09:46

@DominaShantotto it was an expensive non brand one on amazon for £40! A family member went halves on it with me.

DominaShantotto · 26/04/2020 09:49

Thank you! Been trying to find a replacement since ours has gone to the great tennis match in the sky and you can't get it anywhere!

BiddyPop · 26/04/2020 10:38

Our garden is only small, a patio area 4' wide across the back of a normal 3-bed semi-d, with 2 beds on either side of gravel running back to the small bed in front of the back wall, which is about 15' from the back door. But dd makes very good use of that space, around my planters for veg, and wanders in and out a lot to it. We've been eating outside at lunchtimes (it gets shade in evenings so too cold this time of year) and we have cooked a couple of evenings on bbq out there too. So it has been good to have that space, even if small.

BearSoFair · 26/04/2020 10:53

Yesterday:
DS1 (18) about 20 minutes when he helped cut back some plants
DD (12) just over an hour in the morning when we walked around the park, maybe another half an hour in the garden popping in and out
DS2 (10) came to the park and spent another hour or so reading in the garden

So far today DS2 is the only one to have been out (45 minutes at the park again)

BogRollBOGOF · 26/04/2020 11:02

Mine dip in and out. Ds2 is more sporty so gets more fun out of footballs and the swingball so is more willing than DS1.

We went out scootering early evening when it was cooling off a little. We went off in pairs on different routes for a bit of quiet time rather than as a whole family.

MrsBuckette · 26/04/2020 13:23

I have a 5 year old and 16 month old. As the weather has been so nice they've barely been inside. We don't have a huge garden but they have a good selection of garden toys and I'll chuck the duplo/barbies out for them to play with. I've also been furloughed so I am able to supervise them with the paddling pool (keeps them entertained for hours) or set up some sort of messy play activity.

We've got into a nice routine of:-

School work for dd5
Garden until lunch
Nap for 16 month/school work dd5
Walk/scoot for 1-1.5 hours
Garden
Dinner
TV
Bath
Bed

I'm not looking forward this week as rain is predicted for most of it. My dcs have wet weather gear and will want to go in the garden but they're unlikely to stay out for longer than 15 mins. They'll still go out for a walk but again it will be shorter and may have to be at different time of day in an attempt to avoid the rain which will mess up the routine above(!)

(sympathies to those without a garden and/or working around school work/looking after dcs)
