School lunch vouchers and buying alcohol

YourNameIsSenNow · 25/04/2020 11:55

I've got some school lunch e-vouchers and am going to use them whilst I do my large shop.

I don't usually drink but I really fancy a strawberry daquari Grin

Obviously I'm not using the lunch vouchers but do I need to seperate my small bottle of rum from the whole shop Confused

Should I get the kids items, yogurts, fruits, babybels etc... seperatly and use the vouchers.

Then put my usual shop on?

Last time I had a drink was at Christmas but I have anxiety and I'm scared to death someone will say I'm trying to pay with vouchers.

Or should I just make 2 trips

I'm probably over thinking this, it's a hobby of mine, but I just know my luck

I'm pretty sure that as long as the checkout person can see that you've got proper stuff and not 6 bottles of rum and a can of Coke mixer then you're probably ok Grin

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 25/04/2020 12:01

Just do you shop and have the voucher taken off the final total.

YourNameIsSenNow · 25/04/2020 12:03

Yeah I see what you mean. Would be £100+ shop with one 35cl rum so I guess sill be OK 😂

It will be fine OP, it will be really obvious that you are buying essentials with the voucher and using your own money for the rum.

Enjoy your cocktail!

ToastyFingers · 25/04/2020 13:39

It'll be fine all in one :) , I work in a shop and it's a bit of a pain when people want to do lots of unnecessary separate transactions.

lifestooshort123 · 25/04/2020 16:15

I'm disappointed, I thought from the title you were asking whether you could spunk the lot on a case of Strongbow!! Ha!
What you're doing is fine.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 25/04/2020 16:30

Buying protein, veg, fruit, carbs, plus treats for you and DC is fine. Relax.

YourNameIsSenNow · 25/04/2020 18:39

Lol life. Sorry to disappoint you

The vouchers I though state that they cannot be used to purchase alcohol.
So I would purchase separately.

LittleRa · 25/04/2020 20:20

I don’t think the vouchers will work on a transaction that includes alcohol (or cigarettes or scratchcards/lotto), the check out person should be able to help you though, to put the alcohol though as a separate transaction.

Crispsareafoodgroup · 25/04/2020 20:21

I’ve just checked and there is nothing on the voucher about not buying alcohol (or anything else) so you will be fine. Nothing to worry about.

Trolltoes · 25/04/2020 20:24

Not wishing to be goady, am genuinely interested. If you get food vouchers I’m assuming that there is a criteria (income related?). Why wouldn’t you be prioritising food over alcohol? If you can afford alcohol as a treat, should you be accepting food vouchers

FelicityBeedle · 25/04/2020 20:28

Your username is apt isn’t it @trolltoes . People get FSM for plenty of reasons, you can’t deny them ever getting a drink because of that

maxbabi · 25/04/2020 21:00

Dear god whatever next flat screen TVs!!
Just received mine and so relieved I can now buy booze and fags.

Trolltoes · 25/04/2020 21:00

Felicity, I’d hope not really. Just that if there’s a financial threshold (I’m assuming here), then alcohol as costly, will form a bigger % of outgoings. If a child has a state/taxpayer paid for meal then surely an adult caring for the child shouldn’t be buying something the child can’t eat, especially alcohol?

Mrsmorton · 25/04/2020 21:02

Yeah. If you get any state aid at all you're not allowed to enjoy yourself. I believe the actual recommendation is to walk on Lego twice daily just so you realise how lucky you are.

Op. Interested in the outcome of your trip!

PotterHarryWitch · 25/04/2020 21:07

I kind of agree with trolltoes 🙈 sorry OP. Are people asked if they actually need them or are they just sent automatically? I know you might just be good at budgeting.

Trolltoes · 25/04/2020 21:10

Am prepared to be corrected, but I thought the voucher was to buy food for the child as that’s what they would have in school? By all means buy treats but not with a voucher meant to feed a child who presumably would go hungry without it - otherwise why are they being called free school meal vouchers?

PotterHarryWitch · 25/04/2020 21:14

Just see someone said people get the vouchers for alot of reasons. The only reason people are entitled is because they are on a very low income. I say very low as I am on a low income and don't get them (single parent, standard job).

LennyPugGoat · 25/04/2020 21:15

That didn’t take long did it.

How very dare you buy something with your own money for yourself whilst spending vouchers for meals that wouldn’t normally be provided at home on food.

cabbageking · 25/04/2020 21:18

We have stopped using them after two weeks. It takes hours to get the codes and none of them worked.

Going back to providing a hamper of food to parents.

Littlelemonposset · 25/04/2020 21:23

I agree with trolltoes. A food hamper sounds a good way round it

Hwory · 25/04/2020 21:25

There’s currently a transitional protection period for Free School Meals due to the massive fuck up called Universal Credit.

Nevertheless people are allowed to enjoy little luxuries even if they are claiming help.

OxanaVorontsova · 25/04/2020 21:28

Jeez I don't think eligibiltiy for fsm/school meal vouchers means parents are never allowed to buy themselves 35ml of rum

womaninatightspot · 25/04/2020 21:29

Not getting vouchers but ffs would you really begrudge anyone a drink? A glass of wine has become a mandatory end of day thing for me means kids are in bed and I can relax. I love my children dearly but christ the squabbling would drive a saint to drink!
