School lunch vouchers and buying alcohol

YourNameIsSenNow · 25/04/2020 11:55

I've got some school lunch e-vouchers and am going to use them whilst I do my large shop.

I don't usually drink but I really fancy a strawberry daquari Grin

Obviously I'm not using the lunch vouchers but do I need to seperate my small bottle of rum from the whole shop Confused

Should I get the kids items, yogurts, fruits, babybels etc... seperatly and use the vouchers.

Then put my usual shop on?

Last time I had a drink was at Christmas but I have anxiety and I'm scared to death someone will say I'm trying to pay with vouchers.

Or should I just make 2 trips

I'm probably over thinking this, it's a hobby of mine, but I just know my luck

Using vouchers in partial payment of shopping that includes alcohol is absolutely fine. If for any reason there is a problem just separate out into 2 transactions. And don’t listen to the mean spirited people on this thread who don’t believe that anybody who claims free school meals should ever purchase alcohol.

DailyKegelReminder · 25/04/2020 21:37

Its perfectly fine.

UhKevin · 25/04/2020 22:23

I for one hope you got yourself the small bottle of rum today and are bloody well enjoying it, OP. No sarcasm.

I work in a supermarket as part of a weekly shop its fine ,I have had people trying to use them on clothes /alcohol only and then kick off when I have to refuse them

Jellycatspyjamas · 25/04/2020 22:33

Just that if there’s a financial threshold (I’m assuming here), then alcohol as costly, will form a bigger % of outgoings. If a child has a state/taxpayer paid for meal then surely an adult caring for the child shouldn’t be buying something the child can’t eat, especially alcohol?

It depends on the reason, I’m in Scotland where some local authorities are including P1-3 who get FSMs automatically in the voucher scheme - the voucher arrives automatically with relevant parents so I receive one for my DS.

confusedfeelingss · 25/04/2020 22:34

Children from reception to year 2 get fsm regardless of the family income

DullPortraits · 25/04/2020 22:40

Wow i wish i had vouchers to feed my kids then i would be able to afford to buy a treat or 2 for myself when food shopping! Jesus how the other half live eh?!

womaninatightspot · 25/04/2020 22:50

For those of you getting vouchers for P1 - P3 did you have to apply anywhere I hadn't heard about this atall?

PotterHarryWitch · 25/04/2020 22:52

Children in reception to year 2 do get free school meals while in school regardless of income. In my area the parents are not getting these vouchers though. Our local primary have said it is only if the kids qualify for them due to their parents income.

YourNameIsSenNow · 25/04/2020 23:36

I get them as I'm on disability benefits.

Considering I'm not allowed to go anywhere my PIP that usually goes on taxis etc has meant I've got some extra cash available.

I wouldn't usually have spare for anything but since this started we haven't left the house at all so haven't spent on usual things like taxis, bus fare (for 2 children travelling to school) , tram fare for appointments.

Not to mention things like school trip money being refunded. Not having to buy bits and bobs for uniform etc.

35cl of tescos own rum is £5.75

I forgot how judgemental this place can be. Yeesh.

No, there wasn’t an application process, they arrive automatically - have a look on your local authority website because some are giving to all who get FSM and some are means testing. My authority are giving to everyone, the neighbouring authority are means testing so you’d need to check.

Andahelterskelterroundmylittle · 26/04/2020 02:29

In my region, vouchers were specifically chosen for a shop that doesn't sell alcohol. Sad really😭

BulbTherapy · 26/04/2020 02:37

What shop was that? I can't imagine there are many grocery shops that don't. I assumed they would be supermarket vouchers.

sobeyondthehills · 26/04/2020 02:37

Where I live, we were given a choice of supermarkets, one of them being M&S, which made me chuckle.

regardless, we managed to get a massive shop, which also included a bottle of wine, various animal food as well and it was fine.

Andahelterskelterroundmylittle · 26/04/2020 05:03

They chose Farmfoods .I

YourNameIsSenNow · 26/04/2020 10:32

One of my choices was waitrose 😂

I've never even seen one locally

If you can afford to buy rum surely you don’t need the vouchers???

pointythings · 17/09/2021 10:46

Bloody hell, the people on here who truly believe that poor people should never be allowed a treat of any kind! Develop a bit of compassion or fuck off.

TheGrumpyGoat · 17/09/2021 10:47

Why would you come on a 17 month old thread to benefit bash? Confused
Clocktopus · 17/09/2021 10:47
  1. The thread is months old. OP will have already bought it and I hope she thoroughly enjoyed it. She was buying food too.
  1. It's none of your business what people spend the vouchers on.
  1. People get FSM for all sorts of reasons. It doesn't mean they're destitute, it just means they qualify for them.
  1. None of your business.
  1. OP was buying a 35cl bottle of rum, that's hardly a huge amount of alcohol and even if it was a bigger bottle she's allowed to have a treat just like everyone else.
  1. Still none of your business.
Clairenbons · 18/09/2021 00:25

Why should I love!! I work on the till and the amount of people who think they can come in asks buy tons of alcohol with there vouchers is unreal. There for lunches and that it. I’m sick of paying for crap like this

You're being ridiculous to bump this as its months old and op said she wasn't trying to buy it with the vouchers Obviously I'm not using the lunch vouchers but do I need to seperate my small bottle of rum from the whole shop confused
Clocktopus · 18/09/2021 06:34

I'm not your love.

The welfare system, poverty, FSM vouchers, alcoholism, parenting choices, etc are a whole big tangle of tangents that aren't relevant to the thread or to the OP's titchy bottle of rum several months ago so I don't know what your point is in making generalised remarks about other shoppers.

And if your job is making you feel so angry and judgemental then perhaps it's time for a new one?

Clocktopus · 18/09/2021 06:35

As for the dig about you paying for crap like this... would you be happy if the customers of rhe shop where you work got to make judgements about your shopping? Afterall they're "paying for it" as the money they spend pays your wages.
