My LO is 15 months and not yet said his first word so just wondering when others started speaking..

OP posts:

No useful experience to add sorry, but DS is also 15 months and doesn't say any actual words yet. Lots of sounds/babbling but that's it. He does seem to recognise a lot of words though so I'm not worried

RandomMess · 22/04/2020 21:37

I had them at opposite ends of the scale.

One 9 months "dar" for star and talking in clear fluent sentences by 14 months Hmm

Two were both late talkers with speech delay, one very significantly - she was probably nearer 2 before we could understand her own language, first word "Abi" for her sister. Even the speech therapist struggled to understand her.

The other was average so probably around 12/14 months for her first word.

MissisBee · 22/04/2020 21:40

18m - first word was "up". He was premature though, and tends to be a bit late doing everything. Almost 3 now, still a bit behind his peers with speech but making great progress

My firstborn had about 4 words at 20 months. He really did not need any more. He also was not a babbler. He is a bloody genius now. The second child talked in sentences under a year and has not shut up since. Two extremes but both considered typical development.

deste · 22/04/2020 21:50

I can’t remember first word but at 10/11 months could say quite a few words and would shout «Poppy « who is my sons dog. At 19 months she repeats everything now and has quite a few sentences.

Celeriacacaca · 22/04/2020 21:53

DS around 18 months, DD around 1 year old.

MoonlightMistletoe · 22/04/2020 21:53

My almost three year old was a "late" talker, he said his first word around 2years old and has only just started to really develop with speech.

Don't worry OP he will get there, they are all unique and once they start they don't stop x

RandomMess · 22/04/2020 21:54

Definitely teach them baby sign language!

One of my late talkers has her first sign sentence before 14 months. She was signing more to the childminder, she asked "more what?" And she crawled to the highchair and signed more again. She wanted her lunch at 11am 😂

Ifeel1000yearsold · 22/04/2020 21:56

Mine have usually say first word between 8-10 months. 8 month old currently says hi and bye consistently.

They all talk eventually.

mrsed1987 · 22/04/2020 21:57

10 months, he is now 15 months and says about 20+ words and some two syllable ones and two in a row 'all gone'. But he has only just started walking

moveandmove · 22/04/2020 22:00

Mine spoke sentences of a few words at 13 months but was late to sit unaided. They all develop differently.

RiftGibbon · 22/04/2020 22:01

Sorry can't remember but they haven't shut up since.

We did baby signing in the very early days which helped understanding and tried to use makaton (a la Mr Tumble) to support speech.

Keepyourginup · 22/04/2020 22:02

15 months...said 'baby' very clearly whilst pointing out a baby animal in a book

PowerslidePanda · 22/04/2020 22:08

I think it was around 14 months. She was behind enough at her 10 month health visitor check to be referred for a hearing test. But once she finally started talking, she progressed very quickly and was speaking fluent, complex sentences by the 2 yr 3 mo check.

ScarfLadysBag · 22/04/2020 22:11

DD is 14mo. We've got a lot of signs but only a few words: ball, bubble, dada, mama, bye bye and wow. We also have 'baba' which seems to mean it want that/something'. But most of those have only been in the last three weeks or so. She's just taken her first step today so I'm wondering if we will get a burst of more when her little brain isn't focusing so much on learning to walk!

Junobug · 22/04/2020 22:15

Dc1 probably about 9 months. He was talking properly by 2. Dc2 didn't babble at all but was suddenly talking in sentences at 18 months. Dc3 is 23 months, has about 10 words but is perfectly understood by the older 2 so is in no rush to talk. Dc4 is 7 weeks and just started cooing which is incredibly cute.
They all develop at their own rate and get there eventually.

Ilovelala · 22/04/2020 22:17

6month old dd was what's that? Said as wossat'
6month old ds mama

My daughter said lots early
My 8m old son says mama dada nana dog hiya booba and byebye

whatshebininagain · 22/04/2020 22:18

About 12 months. First word was "Mum" I couldn't have been more surprised if the dog had talked! Closely followed by second word "no"!

Yesthatsme · 22/04/2020 22:18

My child was 2 in Feb. And he didn’t make much noise or babble very much. I think he had 5 words maybe. But as soon as he turned two it’s like a light switch went off and everyday he is learning new words and putting words together now.

He says a few phrases and his speech is coming along

The key thing to look out for is not necessarily speech but language - which is both verbal and non verbal and communication.

Don’t worry too much at 15 months old. It’ll come in time. I say that like it’s easy but I was super stressy especially when his peers were speaking in clear and fluent sentences many months before him!

Yesthatsme · 22/04/2020 22:19

I mean went on*

VenusClapTrap · 22/04/2020 22:27

Ds didn’t say a dickie bird till he was well past two years old. Then he launched straight into full sentences. Doesn’t shut up now.

Buscake · 22/04/2020 22:35

First child - 12 months
Second child - 12 months
Third child - 3.5years

notoneday · 22/04/2020 23:03

10 months DS has a couple of words but didn't progress any further. He still spoke very little at age 2, and was officially diagnosed as having at speech delay st 2 years 8 months.

What I'm saying is it doesn't matter when the official first word comes, just talk loads to them. Simple sentences one or two words utterings. Repeat yourself, model to them how to say it. So if they say burr and they are pointing, you can say car (for example) . It's doesn't matter if they aren't even trying to saying car, it's just them hearing the repetition of language. Some children like my DS just take longer, they need to what it more to process it. I'm pretty quiet so I expect I didn't talk enough to him or around him. I still have to make a massive effort to speak more and I find it unnatural and tiring. It will come.

notoneday · 22/04/2020 23:06

Sorry pretty poor typing and grammar there .. I hope you get the idea. I should read what I write before posting. Always an issue, even at at school.

nettytree · 22/04/2020 23:09

My son was 4. Had a severe speech delay. But my daughter around a year.
