DS1was a really early talker. First word at just under 5 months "mama" clear as day. Full sentences by 18 months. He's 4 now and does not stop talking from the second he wakes up to the second he goes to sleep. And talks in his sleep.

DS2 is nearly 7 months and his words are getting more clear. Dada, budder (brother), his name, nana for banana, hiya and bye. But it's mainly just babble. Constantly, like DS1.

One of mine was 22 months, but once he started he was using complex words in context straight away. By his third birthday he was reading. He never really babbled, just sat there, taking everything in until he was ready to talk. We could though tell he could hear us. We might ask him to go to the hall and get your shoes, and off he would toddle coming back with the shoes. We offered him choices- do you want the red ball or the green ball. He clearly understood us but just didn't talk.

13 and 12 months, respectively. But dh didn’t say his first word until he was nearly 2.5 (he caught up perfectly well after that).

DS1 pretty quiet, swore he said "cat" at about 10 months but could be mistaken. Otherwise, around a year ish for some basics. We had DS2 when he was 13 months so it's a bit of a blur. He had a lot of words by two (including knowing his colours and shapes) but wasn't really speaking in sentences. DS2 could say a couple of words before he could sit up including the word Yellow! I have him on camera speaking in short sentences before his first birthday such as "take it off" "shut the door" etc. So he was effectively speaking in sentences before DS1. He hasn't shut up since. Both equally bright, DS1 is all about numbers and computers and studying that at Uni. Ds2 still all about words and studying Politics...

DC1 said duck at 10 months, then didn't speak again until over a year. The others were all around 15 months, except for the youngest who didn't speak for ages. She didn't walk until 14 months and was way after that before she started talking.

Now she's 13 I wish quite often that she would stop Wink

HavenDilemma · 23/04/2020 00:48

5 months!!!

notangelinajolie · 23/04/2020 02:00

I wouldn't worry OP, they all develop at different stages. Mine were fast on walking and slow on talking.

At 15 months some chatter endlessly and some say nothing at all.

2 of my 3 never said a word until they started nursery school.
My eldest just listened, missed out the all the baby talk and went straight into adult conversation. I asked her about this once and she said that she saw no point in talking unless there was something important to say.
My youngest however, loved the sound of her own voice and is still a chatterbox to this day.

Op, never compare your child's progress with others. An example, mine could say bapa or bata ( butterfly) way before 11 months n sentences by 15 months. Yet stature wise he hardly grows. I remember at parks people being amazed at how well he could talk while inside and sometimes loudly I was envying how their bubs were growing physically. At 21 he can "make his convincing case for booby" but still wears 9-12 months. Keep talking with him normally. If he is significantly delayed it will be picked up (probably around 2.5, 3 years) and they will have the right support.
Good luck

GingerScallop · 23/04/2020 02:12

BillyAndTheSillies lucky you. I fancied that would be my son's first word n used to compete with DH. His first word, 4.5 months was bata/bapa ( butterfly), second was car. He could say several words before he got to Mama and daddy.

TKAAHUARTG · 23/04/2020 06:05

What is your DC’s first language GingerScallop? And why is there two words for butterfly?

spiderlight · 23/04/2020 07:41

Mine said his first clear words at 9 months - 'tar', pointing to a Christmas star decoration, swiftly followed by 'car' and 'tair' (stairs). He basically hasn't shut up since! On the flipside, he was a very late walker.

CoodleMoodle · 23/04/2020 09:20

DD only said the usual Mum, Dad, Nan until she was about 16mo, along with her word for blue, animal sounds, and "more". Then she woke up one day around 20mo and just started talking in full sentences. 6yo now and off the charts for reading and vocabulary.

DS is 21mo. He only says Mama, Dada, Nan, animal sounds, "brum brum" and "more". It's very frustrating for him and us, but he'll get there.

He's much better with physical stuff than DD ever was, so that's clearly his "thing". She's not so good physically but never, ever stops talking!
