I have Nits - Help!!

Wilberforce1 · 21/04/2020 22:57

Who would have thought the kids could get nits after being at home for 5 weeks but apparently they can take up to 6 weeks to be itchy etc.. who knew 🤷‍♀️ Despite regularly washing dd's hair I'd missed that she had nits until she started going crazy with an itchy head this morning. Turns out she and I both have them 🤮 and I'm freaking out massively because I don't do bugs/insects at all (I am a massive wimp)! Anyway dh got us some Lyclear and we treated all of us but dh was in charge of mine and I'm not sure his heart was in it so I'm not confident I've been treated properly. I need more stuff and I need to do it myself. What's the best one I can buy and how easy is it to do it myself? I've got a Nitty Gritty comb coming from Amazon tomorrow. Do I need to do all of us again? First time ever with nits in the house! If I didn't have such a massive ugly head I think I'd shave my hair off!! Help!!

Headrin once and comb with nitty gritty

Geraniumblue · 21/04/2020 23:11

Echoing sestras - Hedrin once is brilliant and easy.

rjebgf · 21/04/2020 23:12

I agree use Hedrin once (from amazon) but use it twice, a week apart. Also as the pp siad get a nitty gritty nit comb and comb every day with conditioner as well as doing the above. That will definitely get the nits.

And with hedrin once, ensure that you buy enough shampoo to wash it out. I used half a bottle of shampoo (without wetting the hair) to get it out. If you scrimp on the shampoo or wet the hair prior to shampooing off the hedrin, your hair will be the greasiest it has ever been in your life.

sestras · 21/04/2020 23:16

@rjebgf first wash with washing up liquid and second shampoo with whatever you want avoids all the oiliness.

falgelednl · 21/04/2020 23:21

We had this a few years back. I have three children and two of them had nits at the same time and one of them passed it my way.
We combed with nitty gritty and conditioner, tried all sorts of stuff - including Hedrin Once, some mousse thing in a red can, coconut oil (but we all had long hair (one of them almost to her bum!)) so obviously must have kept missing some and it just dragged on for a couple of months - with combing every 3rd evening and treating every weekend. Life was dismal!
A friend recommended NitWits from Amazon.
It worked and they've never come back.

Wilberforce1 · 21/04/2020 23:28

Thanks so much everyone, my head is so itchy I'm not sure if it's psychological or if the Lyclear didn't work this morning. Going to get back on Amazon now.

Just nit comb every other day with conditioner. You need to break the reproductive cycle. Treatments will kill live lice but eggs will still hatch. After a couple of weeks of combing you'll be clear.

indemMUND · 21/04/2020 23:53

Hedrin once, coat in talc then dishsoap eg fairy liquid before getting it wet. Then more dishsoap as required to get it out. Then up to a whole bottle of cheap conditioner. I've got it down to a fine art with DD now. If any eggs are left go through section by section when dry and remove them with fingernails if you can, nitty gritty doesn't always work. I figured out this process after struggling with Hedrin not washing out the first time. Second time round I did all of this and worked like (severe effort) magic. Good luck!

Wilberforce1 · 22/04/2020 00:19

Is it going to be easy to do it on myself? I can't rely on dh he say it makes him feel ill 🙄 I can do dd no problem.

The nitty gritty comb (available on Amazon) is easy to do on yourself. As above, do it with conditioner. The combs that come with treatment are not as good.

Smelborp · 22/04/2020 07:47

Comb with conditioner every three days. Works brilliantly.

Wilberforce1 · 22/04/2020 07:49

Great thanks, I ordered a nifty gritty yesterday and it should be arriving today.

I feel your pain - my DS passed them to me earlier this year. I used Lyclear (twice) and used a nit comb obsessively for about 3 weeks (think combing 5+ times a day). Also get your DH to check up close daily - they are tiny little buggers when eggs and the really cling to your hair and you have to scrape them off up the hair with your nail. Focus on the hairline (all around), nape of neck, behind ears and crown. After writing that, that’s basically all over 🤣 Good luck!

M0recakeplease · 22/04/2020 08:27

Oh - They normally lay eggs about 1cm away from the scalp on the hair

FlowerArranger · 22/04/2020 08:35

Veteran nit-picker here Shock

I had 3 DC who repeatedly got nits - and passed them on to me once or twice... Forget about chemicals as the buggers always become immune in no time. This is the only thing that works:

Just nit comb every other day with conditioner. You need to break the reproductive cycle. Treatments will kill live lice but eggs will still hatch. After a couple of weeks of combing you'll be clear.

GreenTulips · 22/04/2020 08:40

2 girls with long hair

We have tried every one on the market

The only thing that worked was Avon’s skin so soft, spray on and leave for 15 mins and comb through, we washed our hair as normal and there was no oily residue (have to admit I was skeptical, so I tried my hair first to see what effect it would have)

When they are gone get some Tea Tree oil it’s about £3 and put it in the shampoos and conditioner and a few drops on their hair in between, this keeps them off.

samandpoppysmummy · 22/04/2020 08:43

My DD used to get them regularly when she was at primary school. We tried just about every brand over the years and NitWits was the only one that stopped them coming back. We bought it from Amazon.

Greenscissors · 22/04/2020 09:09

First experience this year - nowhere near as bad as I thought, literally just a few adults combed out over a few sessions. We just used conditioner and combs, no chemicals. I found it oddly pleasing (!) and was able to spot/feel the eggs on DD's very fine hair.

You do have to continue daily combing until definitely nothing left.

rjebgf · 22/04/2020 09:19

You can easily do hedrin once yourself, don’t worry.

Dilligaf81 · 22/04/2020 09:28

We started isolating and in the shower I was brushing my hair in the shower and a massive nit flew out.
I havent had an itchy head and none of the kids have nit, just me 😢

I have very curly long hair which I can only brush with a whole bottle of conditioner on it so putting the nutty gritty near it wasn't something I was excited about!

I used 3 bottles of hedrin once (had no issue washing it out, as others seem to have) then at every shower I brushed my hair through with the nitty gritty and loads of conditioner, it's been taking the best part of an hour to do it (I turn the water off, water meter to think of 😂).

It's taken 3 weeks but finally I'm clear.
I thought lockdown was a downer but well played life, nits made it worse.

Good luck OP.

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 22/04/2020 09:33

If you've got straighteners I'd run them through your hair too. The high heat frazzled the eggs. I'd probably straighten it everytime I washed

Wilberforce1 · 22/04/2020 15:42

My Nitty Gritty comb has just arrived along with a box of Hedrin Once and a box of Nitwits so I'm fully prepared, never been so excited to get an Amazon delivery!! Going to give my hair a comb and then go over it with the straighteners!

OP posts:
sasparilla1 · 22/04/2020 15:51

I don't bother with chemicals any more. I use a nitty gritty and straighten hair every time it's washed.

BabbleBee · 22/04/2020 15:53

I don’t use any chemicals now. I use nitty gritty with loads of conditioner, rinse out then rinse a handful of malt vinegar through the hair. It works a treat every time.
