Are feature walls still a thing?

I'm fed up of my white living room and wall some colour on the walls but probably / maybe not the whole room. Can I still do one wall or is that a bit dated now? I'm talking paint not wallpaper.

If so any suggestions would be great!

Have you considered that what you like while on lockdown might not be what you like when lockdown is over? But that said I’m also painting at the moment to try a feel a bit of control over this crazy environment and situation.

What is your living room like? Do you have a fireplace? What is the window like and what direction does it face? Is the room a Square? Rectangle?

Finally what colour are you thinking? If you have a dado rail, have you considered painting the ceiling down to the dado rail?

BogRollBOGOF · 20/04/2020 16:25

I like feature walls for using bold colours. The DCs have scarlet/ royal blue walls with white stop it being overwhelming. I'm planning a purple wall in one bedroom. The kitchen is blue/ neutral.

Some rooms are one colour of a lighter colour as the proportions and light suit that style better.

I do not do grey. I choose colours on what makes me feel good in that particular room.

I think it's a bit dated now to be honest.
Go big or go home 😂

Feature walls - much loved by my 80+ neighbours.
Spect Nora Batty stockings will be the next big fashion item.

StoorieHoose · 20/04/2020 16:34

Does it matter? Surely if you want one wall that has wallpaper or a different then just do it

Toilenstripes · 20/04/2020 16:35

I think they’re dated, but if you like them then go for it.

catinb0oots · 20/04/2020 16:36

Dated

Rockbird · 20/04/2020 16:36

All I see now is people randomly taping up their walls and making triangles. Looks like a shitload of hassle!

Susanna85 · 20/04/2020 16:48

I prefer white, light & airy.
Would rather see a dark or bright feature wall than the whole space being dark.

Go for it. If it looks terrible it's only one wall to re do.

Freddiefox · 20/04/2020 16:49

I think it’s a bit dated now to be honest. I think a painted chimney breast might work. But it would need to be bold.

ICouldHaveBeenAContender · 20/04/2020 17:34

DD and her BF bought a brand new house last year. They have painted every room, and have a feature wall in every one of them.

So maybe it's so dated, that it's become hip again Grin

Same here! I’m in my mid 20s and have just bought my first house and all the main rooms have a feature wall!

ICouldHaveBeenAContender · 20/04/2020 17:47

Spanglish Grin I'm sure it looks as good as DD's does.

Amymone · 20/04/2020 17:50

I think it's dated. Always reminds me of 'Changing Rooms' and was never a massive fan. 'Feature' ceilings or 'feature' woodwork seem to be the thing these days.

MsTSwift · 20/04/2020 17:51

We’ve gone big and wall papered the whole room my bold choice wallpaper and freshened up ceiling and picture rail it looks awesome !

4amWitchingHour · 20/04/2020 18:33

I think people are only saying it's dated because they remember when it first came about (which I'm pretty sure is Changing Rooms in the 90s), but you look at most home improvement things in TV now and people still have them or some variant of them - e.g. only one wall of wallpaper, only chimney breast or recesses painted - it's just not made into a big deal as it's a normal / mainstream thing to do

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 20/04/2020 18:37

They are in this house as I like really bright colours and patterns and they would be overwhelming on more than one wall. One room has double feature walls.

Dualipa · 20/04/2020 18:52

It's a rectangle living room with a log burner. We have oak shutters & white leather sofa.
I was thinking a dark royal blue on the chimney breast or all of that wall?

I love a feature wall and I love big, splashy, colourful wallpaper usually with animals or trees or something. Cole and Son are my favourite, to me they are the same as having a big piece of art on the wall. I don't care about trends, it's my house so I please myself.

vanillandhoney · 20/04/2020 20:06

We've just redecorated our living room and we've done it in two colours - so two walls in a neutral shade and two in a bolder shade. I absolutely love it - and it's my house so surely that's all that matters?

MolotovMocktail · 20/04/2020 20:12

Nooo feature walls are dreadful, so dated.

Uygop · 20/04/2020 20:32

We have them - done by the previous owners. I like them. A nice, bright colour, but not over the top. Trends really don't matter.

Icequeen01 · 20/04/2020 20:41

Well I must be dated then and I don't care! We did a feature wall in our hall and I think it looks lovely and not old fashioned at all.

Are feature walls still a thing?
vanillandhoney · 20/04/2020 20:49

Why does it matter if something is dated? It's your house, do what you want with it!

After all, it's just paint. It's not permanent. You can go over it if you change your mind next year.

TheWordmeister · 20/04/2020 20:50

Very dated indeed.
