It’s St George’s Day next week. Will you celebrate? How?

Just spotted on the calendar that it’s St George’s Day next week. We don’t normally celebrate but am wondering about doing/cooking something just to relieve the groundhog-day-ness of life a little bit. Something a bit fun - so maybe cream team and a silly game? No idea what though! Are you planning anything? Or any ideas on what we could do?

It would have been my Grandad’s birthday so I will raise a glass for that.

Jammydodger1981 · 19/04/2020 09:47

Depending on how old your children are, there are loads of ideas for making a dragon online out of egg boxes/loo rolls/cereal boxes?

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/04/2020 09:49

It's also Shakespeare's birthday - make a ruff and watch a streamed play.

MaidenMotherCrone · 19/04/2020 10:02

I'm not English so won't be marking the day.

MissCalamity · 19/04/2020 10:44

It's my daughter's birthday on St.George's day so we will be celebrating that (in between trying to work from home)
So, no probably wouldn't bother with St. George's day as well.

I'm not English so won't be marking the day.

You are clearly also not Ethiopian, Catalan or Georgian.

MrsJoshNavidi · 19/04/2020 11:11

The English don't usually mark St. George's Day. I don't know why - the other 3 nations that make up the United Kingdom celebrate their patron saint's days with gusto.

Mysterian · 19/04/2020 11:14

I won't be celebrating somebody who helped to extictify dragons.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 19/04/2020 11:14

At least Saint David is actually Welsh.

(As is St Patrick)

maddy68 · 19/04/2020 11:15

Not sure England had much to be proud off. I certainly won't be celebrating the day

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 19/04/2020 11:20

Not sure England had much to be proud of.

Well there's the language you're using to slag it off for starters.

FurryDogMother · 19/04/2020 11:23

My Dad died on St George's Day last year. He'd lived a long and full life, so I may break my sobriety for a day and open a bottle of champagne to remember him by.

Coldemort · 19/04/2020 11:26

Was Patrick Irish? Didn't he go to Ireland to rid them from Snakes? (Excuse my ignorance I'm Welsh lol)

MrsJoshNavidi · 19/04/2020 11:26

I'm Welsh, not English, but that makes me sad.

RhymingRabbit3 · 19/04/2020 11:29

Extictify?
If you mean "contribute to the extinction of" then you do know dragons arent real?

We dont usually celebrate it in any way, apart from the fact it's my brothers birthday. We might do some dragon themed activities with DD3. I have a dragon colouring book somewhere...

JaneJeffer · 19/04/2020 11:31

As is St Patrick Grin

Mysterian · 19/04/2020 11:59

Well, of course they're not real any more! Duh! 'Cause St George did so much extictification.

Speak for yourself
England has got a huge amount to be proud of...

The NHS
The emergency services
The judiciary
The police
The Welfare State...

Just for starters.. I have lived in countries that have no national free health service ,where most public servants want a bribe for doing their job. Where the police are corrupt and the court system rigged.

Anyone who thinks this amazing country filled with amazing people going out of their way to help each other in communities across England (and the rest of the UK) is quite frankly ignorant and probably needs to experience life in a few other countries to appreciate what we have.

I am not a nationalist, I am a full on pro European it doesn't stop me being immensely proud of England..

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 19/04/2020 12:05

Mysterian I think someone has had their sense of humour extinctified 😆

ineedaholidaynow · 19/04/2020 12:24

St George’s Day is a big day in the Scouting calendar. Most groups usually have a parade on the nearest Sunday and local Primary schools usually let the children wear the Cub uniform etc on the actual day.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 19/04/2020 12:48

He did go there, taken by Irish raiders as a slave, so most likely from what is now Wales, and as a Celtic Briton his nationality in modern terms is Welsh.

The snake thing is blarney. The lack of snakes had been noted by Romans two hundred years earlier. Seems they were wiped out in the last Ice Age and had no means of returning after that.

Likethebattle · 19/04/2020 15:00

I’m Scottish so no I won’t bother. I’ll wait until November for St Andrews day.

MegUffin · 19/04/2020 15:02

Another English hating thread

Mumsnet is such a a delight lately ..

8by8 · 19/04/2020 15:29

It’s also Shakespeare day, so we’ll maybe celebrate that.
